The Honor Flights are free for veterans. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In the midst of a housing supply crunch, San Diego is seeing apartments taken off market and reserved for short-term vacationers. The units would add to the estimated 16,000 vacation rentals now available in the City of San Diego, according to a recent audit.Now, a company called Sonder has signed master leases at apartment complexes and towers in locations including downtown, North Park, Little Italy, and Point Loma. Instead of renting them full time, the company leases them to visitors, charging more than 0 per unit on an average night. "Every San Diego resident needs to be afraid of that," said Brian Curry, whose group Save San Diego Neighborhoods is tracking Sonder. "It's a huge crisis, drives up rents, drives up housing prices."Curry's group estimates Sonder has leased more than 70 units and counting, including entire buildings in some locations. A spokesman for Sonder declined comment Thursday. In the past, the company has stated it pays all local taxes and that it has the right to sublease to short-term renters. Additionally, it has noted that developers have used increased revenue from Sonder to build even more market rate units. Still, City Councilwoman Barbara Bry said she was appalled at the practice and says the city should be ensuring developers deliver on the units the city approves. "Private developers tell us, 'let us build more units, let the market take care of our housing problem,' and then they artificially remove units and turn them into short-term vacation rentals," she said. "That's not fair."Meanwhile, the city code enforcement division is continuing to investigate The Louisiana complex on University Avenue. The city approved the complex as a 13-unit mixed-use apartment complex, but Sonder has the master lease for each of the market-rate units. This year, the walk was also in honor of Lori Kaye, the only fatal victim in the Poway Synagogue shooting in April. Friends say Kaye was a long-time supporter of the Friendship Circle, a non-profit that provides support and friendship to special needs individuals and their families. Last year, Kaye donated all of the shirts for everyone at the walk. This year, everyone wore shirts that said "Walk for Lori" The walk raised over ,000 for The Friendship Circle. 581

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Intense heat is sparking fires and sending San Diegans to the coast seeking relief."The temperatures today are pretty extreme," Cal Fire Captain Thomas Shoots said, adding the brush is dry from the heat and lack of rain making Wednesday's forecasted record heat very dangerous.A brush fire sparked in Ramona near Ramona St. and Boundary Ave around 11 a.m.The triple-digit heat causing concern for Fire Chief Jason Lambirth with the U.S. Forest Service, "we really take care of our own people, keep a close eye on them, make sure they're hydrated with water and Gatorade and go from there."Firefighters kept the blaze within a couple of acres, according to Shoots.A huge relief to neighbors, like Leanne Plunkett who has lived in Ramona for 44 years. "Oh I'm relaxed now, but it was pretty hectic for a while!" Plunkett said.She was stepping into the shower when law enforcement knocked on their door to issue evacuation orders. Plunkett said she jumped out, threw on clothes, and started packing jewelry and important documents.She said they had to evacuate twice in the past, including the Cedar Fire.The heat taking its toll on San Diegans across the county. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Loved ones are speaking out more than a week after a bloody melee that injured eight guards at Donovan state prison in Otay Mesa.The violence erupted two Sundays ago, around 4 p.m., inside the recreation yard. Corrections officials say there were about 20 inmates in the yard when one of them attacked a guard. His fellow guards rushed to help. In the mayhem that followed, four inmates allegedly assaulted guards. Six of the guards suffered stab wounds.Christina Armstrong's longtime boyfriend, correctional officer Malcolm Billingsley, was in the middle of it."The best way I hear him describe it is a 'melee, just chaos' ... There was so much going on, it was hard for him to pinpoint each action that was taken," said Armstrong.Corrections officials say a warning shot by one of the guards ended the altercation. As the guards were rushed to hospitals, news filtered out to loved ones."It was frightening not knowing for several hours what was going on. It was terrifying," said Armstrong.Billingsley was not stabbed, but suffered a back injury and possible nerve damage to his hand."It's hard for him to everyday things. He can't take care of our son, let alone play with him. He's in a lot of pain," said Armstrong.His fellow guard Roland Milan was stabbed in the face and suffered a brain bleed. His wife Marcy says he's had four plates inserted into his face."A stab wound to the face, to the mouth area. All his upper teeth were knocked out," she said.Sources say in all, eight guards were injured, including one with a fractured bone in his back.Armstrong says because of an ongoing investigation, she can't reveal details of the melee, but says the guards fought hard for their lives and the lives of their fellow guards."They are all heroes. Malcolm went to work that day to carry out his duty as a correctional officer an he became a victim but his strength and courage allowed him to come home a hero," said Armstrong, choking back tears.Corrections officials say the four inmates could face attempted murder charges.Gofundme campaigns have been set up for both Milan and Billingsley to help with expenses. 2147
