An 8-year-old boy in Polk County, Florida caught an 11-foot, 3-inch gator late last month. It was his first real catch despite gator hunting several times with his dad.Grayson Chantley caught the gator on Lake Kissimmee late last month. An Ohio company that makes bulletproof backpack shields is experiencing an increase in demand for its product due to concerns over school shootings."We've had, I would say, a 100 to 200 percent increase certainly in response," said Matt White, the director of marketing for ShotStop Ballistics, based in Stow.The backpack inserts are one-quarter inch thick and weigh about a pound. It's made from the company's Duritium technology, which can block bullets from handguns and some rifles. However, it does not protect against high-caliber weapons, like AR-15s.The shields come in hard or soft designs and cost 0.White said more parents have been inquiring and ordering the insert following the Feb. 14 school shooting in Parkland, Florida. Demand also increased after a 13-year-old boy died after shooting himself inside a middle school restroom in nearby Jackson Township."The fact that you're even here and we're talking about it, it's terrible," White said. "It's not something that we ever envisioned. It's not something that we had planned for, but the potential with what's out there now, it's one more layer of safety."White said the bulletproof product was originally meant as a clipboard for police officers to provide added protection during traffic stops.Some believe sending kids off to school with the shield only creates more fear and anxiety."It's not right. I mean, come on," said Dave Spearing who has grandchildren in the nearby Cuyahoga Falls School District. As Congress mulls over the possibility of another stimulus package, and the idea of including a second wave of stimulus checks in it, the House Ways and Means Committee estimates 30 to 35 million Americans are still waiting on their stimulus money from the CARES Act.“Let’s make sure that we don’t lose focus on the people who didn’t get a payment from the first branch,” said Bob Probasco.Probasco is a CPA and the director of the Low Income Tax Clinic at Texas A&M University. He has followed activity with stimulus checks since they started going out in April, in particular, all of the issues the IRS has had in getting the money into taxpayers’ hands.“There are just a number of different problems,” said Probasco. "People had old bank account information on their tax returns, and then, they changed their bank account, but the IRS doesn’t have the new one. The payment went to the bank, it will have to be returned and then a paper check will go out.”The IRS attempted to speed payments up in May by sending out prepaid debit cards to 4 million people, but the debit cards were not as helpful as anticipated and resulted in the IRS continuing to distribute paper checks for the remaining payments.“There were big problems with that,” Probasco explained. “We saw tax representatives, CPAs, lawyers, who people came to and said, ‘I got this’ and they weren’t sure that was legitimate.”The debit cards were sent in barely-marked envelopes that caused so many to think they were fake. So, the IRS had to issue a press release, reminding people that the “plain envelope from Money Network Cardholder Services” is not junk mail.In addition, the IRS had to issue guidance for those who destroyed or threw out their debit cards, asking them to call 1-800-240-8100. Anyone else who hasn’t received a debit card or stimulus check payment can go to the IRS’s Check My Payment feature on its website.“If you see on there that a payment was sent out, but you didn’t get the payment, there is a different number that you can call which is 1-800-919-9835,” Probasco said.The good news is the IRS expects to get all the stimulus payments out ahead of the initial September timeline, and a proposed second round of stimulus checks could go smoother.“There will be some improvements because the IRS has learned some lessons,” said Probasco. 2341

An Arkansas sheriff's office has arrested a woman who helped her boyfriend escape from the county jail last month by posing as a deputy from California.Maxine Feldstein, 30, was arrested Aug. 17 in connection with forgery, accomplice to third-degree escape and criminal impersonation.Feldstein's boyfriend, Nicholas Lowe, was at the Washington County Detention Center on July 27 with a hold for criminal impersonation out of Ventura, Calif., according to a probable cause affidavit.Feldstein, who had bonded out earlier that day, called Washington County jail staff and identified herself as deputy "L. Kershaw" with the Ventura County Sheriff's Office. She also provided a forged VCSO document releasing the agency's hold on Lowe.Jail staff learned of the forgery and accidental release two days later, when a VCSO deputy called to say he was on his way to pick up Lowe.The sheriff's office discovered through jail video that Lowe told Feldstein to pose as a VCSO deputy while she visited him, according to the affidavit.Lowe said Feldstein should tell Washington County that VCSO was "having issues with overcrowding and all low-priority extraditions have been suspended," according to the affidavit.Washington County later confirmed the VCSO document Feldstein used was fake, and that VCSO didn't have a deputy named "L. Kershaw," according to the affidavit.Lowe was also arrested Friday and faces a felony charge of second-degree escape.A spokeswoman for the sheriff's office said the agency is "still evaluating to determine the best corrective action needed to ensure this doesn't happen again.""There is a procedure to ensure requests are legitimate, and that hasn't changed," she said.Feldstein and Lowe were being held Tuesday (Aug. 21) at the Washington County Detention Center on bonds of ,500 and ,000, respectively.The pair has hearings set for Sept. 5 in Washington County Circuit Court. 1920
