The two created "East County Kids News" as a way to keep doing school news, even while school was canceled.When in-person learning resumed in the fall, the girls went their separate ways, with Berlin going to Los Coches Creek Middle School and Bristol at WD Hall Elementary. But they took what they learned from EC Kids News and used it to make their school newscasts better."I feel like we have a lot more resources," says Berlin. "We learned how to work with computers a lot more ever break. So, when we returned, we knew a lot more about iMovie and all the stuff you need to know for broadcast."But, beyond the technical improvements they brought back to campus, the girls say they learned how important their work had been to keep the community together."I have learned that kids are resilient and they can go above and beyond," says Bristol. "And that when you want something you can go for it.""It's really taught us how amazing our community is," says Berlin. "Also that it's really important to stay connected with everyone, because it has been a rough time but when we connect it makes that rough time not as hard."Their efforts have impressed teachers at both schools."For them to find the silver lining in the cloud is is inspiring to to everyone," says Laura Albright, a teacher at WD Hall. "You always set your expectation high for your students, but they totally surpassed anything we could think of."The only downside to returning to campus is losing the chance to co-anchor as sisters. (KGTV) -- Christian Unified Schools of San Diego welcomed junior and high school students back to campus on Tuesday.The El Cajon-based school district brought elementary school students back to school last week, and district officials said now it's time for the other grades to join.The school's website lists many of the precautions they're taking, including multiple temperature checks. Students will get their temperature checked before they are dropped off at school, and then again before entering the building.Everyone on campus must wear a mask or face shield, and students must wash or sanitize their hands before they enter each classroom.The district says social distancing will be observed in all classrooms. Plexiglass barriers will be at each desk.All the classrooms are equipped with cleaning stations to be used between each class.Teachers will hold school religious services outside, and chapel will have limited seating.The district says each night staff will clean the entire facility. 1028

(KGTV) - At age 73, Brian Duncan is following his own advice: if you think you can do it, you probably can.When Duncan got out of the Navy in 1967 he wanted to become a police officer. At the time, however, he says departments wanted big, tall men with 20/20 vision. He didn't fit the mold and moved on to a career in the court system.Twelve years ago, the itch came back, and Duncan joined the El Cajon Police Department's Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol, also known as the RSVP program.Now he's taking his service even further, working to become a reserve police officer.If he lands a job, Duncan will be a sworn police officer able to make arrests and carry firearms. The only difference is he'll always have to work alongside a regular police officer.Duncan says his age is not a barrier and he's doing this to make a difference in the community."I've proven I can get through the academy, so I can do it. If I didn't think I could do it or would jeopardize someone's safety, I wouldn't do it," said Duncan.Reserve officers work voluntarily and are not paid.On Friday Duncan graduates from Grossmont College's 32nd Police Academy and already has an application out for a job.  1210

EA Sports said it will cancel three remaining Madden Classic qualifier events to review safety protocols after a deadly shooting last weekend at an event in Jacksonville, Florida."We've all been deeply affected by what took place in Jacksonville," EA Sports CEO Andrew Wilson said in a statement released Monday. "This is the first time we've had to confront something like this as an organization, and I believe the first time our gaming community has dealt with a tragedy of this nature."On Sunday, David Katz, 24, opened fired at a Madden Classic qualifying tournament killing two and injuring 10 others. Katz had competed in the head-to-head tournament but was eliminated.Sheriff Mike Williams said Katz was actively targeting other gamers. On Monday, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said Elijah Clayton, 22, and Taylor Robertson, 28, were killed. All of the injured are expected to survive.The shooting forces eSports events to reconsider security at their venues."I think the eSports industry as a whole is going to have to step back and take a look at further strengthening our security," CompLexity Gaming founder and CEO Jason Lake told CNN on Sunday following the shooting.
