SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego nonprofit is hoping to tackle the homeless crisis with a creative solution.The nonprofit, Amikas, envisions a San Diego where every woman and child has a safe place to live in.They hope to build emergency sleeping cabins, which could temporarily house homeless women and children as they look for a permanent place to live. "They're small, they're immediate, they go up in a matter of days, and so we can house a lot of people very quickly with this solution," said Shanna Welsh-Levin, President of Amikas.Designed by San Diego-based Treecycling, the homes are inexpensive and can be built within 24 hours. The cabins are mobile, able to be dismantled within a few hours. "We built these things like houses so they feel like homes," said Gabriel Stafford, with Treecyling. The house built this week is on display at the Meridian Baptist Church in El Cajon. The ultimate goal would be to run a two-year pilot program, creating an emergency cabin village to test the idea. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A woman was arrested late Wednesday night after a crash off Interstate 805 that left her car engulfed in flames.The incident occurred at around 11 p.m. in an area off southbound I-805, near Clairemont Mesa Boulevard.ABC 10News learned the woman was involved in a two-vehicle wreck that then caused her Nissan 350Z to burst into flames.The driver was able to get out of the vehicle without major injuries; the driver of the other car was not injured.It took responding fire crews over 20 minutes to knock down the blaze.The Nissan’s driver was treated at the scene before she was arrested on unspecified charges. 639

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A San Diego Midwife is living her dream of opening her own birth center, helping minority women.We met Nikki Helms in July when her GoFundMe was off the charts, raising more than 1,000.She had been a licensed midwife for about a year and wanted to open a birth center. Fast forward to December and her dream is coming true."We've got signage and I stood at the foot of my stairs and cried about that," Helms said filled with gratitude. The community has continued to wrap their arms around her mission."It's really just been amazing and overwhelming, and I feel so blessed," she said wiping a tear from the corner of her eye. "And so grateful and I get teared up every time I start talking about it because it gives me the opportunity to go care for families and you know it just blows my mind."Since July she's raised another ,000 and packages keep arriving on her doorstep with items for the birth center.Her mission is to support women through childbirth and beyond. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A special ceremony was held at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton on Friday, honoring missing in action (MIA) service members and prisoners of war (POA). Loved ones, veterans, and active duty service members gathered at the base, participating in a moment of silence and watching as a wreath was laid in honor of the missing. "I had a father-in-law, Ernesto Castillo, captured by the Japanese in 1942," said Vicki Miller, who works at the Naval Hospital.For 26 years Miller made it her mission to honor service members like her father-in-law, organizing the ceremony each year on National POW/MIA Recognition Day."They were very cruel, they took out his teeth, pulled his fingernails and toenails out, starved him, made him walk that 76-mile walk on Baaton Death March," said Miller. Miller says while her father-in-law survived, he lived the rest of his life with guilt. She adds that families still waiting for answers endure another type of torture.
