(KGTV) A witness is disputing the claim that a July 4th incident in an El Cajon neighborhood was a racially motivated attack.On Lima Court on the night of July 4th, families were getting set to view a nearby fireworks show. Scott, who was visiting family, says that for hours, neighbors had been dealing with drivers speeding through the area."Bunch of people telling were telling the cars that were passing through. It happened dozens of times ... to slow down," said Scott.Just before 9, an SUV drove into the neighborhood. Scott says it was also speeding. The woman in the passenger seat, Alana Christman, says they were driving slowly. The man at the wheel was her fiance, William Gavin. Their two young children were in the back."I was looking down at the GPS and we heard, 'You can't come in our neighborhood,'" Christman told 10news in an interview Monday.She says at that moment, a man threw a lit cigarette, which landed on her blouse, the ashes filling up the vehicle. Surveillance video obtained by 10news shows Gavin was outside the vehicle moments later.While Gavin says the man he believed tossed the cigarette, took the first swing, Scott says he saw Gavin swing first."Hit him, threw him to the ground, then kicked him in the chest," said Scott.In the video, a group of people are seen following Gavin to the SUV. Christman calls the group a 'mob,' attacking the SUV and ripping the door off its hinge. Scott says the group was just trying to prevent the man from leaving the scene."Everyone tried to get him to stop for a second. The door was damaged in the process of car trying to pull off and speed off, and ended up hitting a lady in the process," said Scott.Police say a woman suffered minor injuries. The family says they pulled around the corner to get to safety and called police. They told 10news they felt the incident was racially motivated. Scott believes the spark was the speeding cars."People of all races were yelled at that night. It was preventing people from being jerks. It wasn't anything to do with race. It was trying to keep safety for the kids," said Scott.Police say there is "no indication the incident was racially motivated." A spokesperson says the investigation is ongoing and they're looking into the alleged cigarette tossing and a possible hit-and-run case. No arrests have been made."We are pleased with the footage obtained and hope this helps bring out justice for our case," said Christman. 2470

These are the hallmark images of Black Friday.Well, they were.That was before the COVID-19 pandemic gripped the nation. Now, the future of the biggest shopping discount day of the year is unknown.Yes, it will still happenFor many, shopping on the day after Thanksgiving is a tradition. Historically, it’s also one of the best days of the year to save money on big-ticket items like electronics and appliances.But with social distancing the norm, it’s hard to imagine shoppers camping out on the sidewalk next to one another this year ahead of Nov. 27. It’s even more difficult to picture stores overflowing with excited shoppers.Retail experts believe Black Friday will still happen in 2020, despite the pandemic. But there’s no disputing the fact that it won’t be a traditional experience.“Being there at the crack of dawn, waiting in lines, the hustle and bustle in the store — that’s probably not going to exist,” says Jane Boyd Thomas, a professor of marketing at Winthrop University in South Carolina who has done research about Black Friday.Sales will shift further onlineFor years, Black Friday has shifted to online channels, merging with Cyber Monday into a weekend-long event. The pandemic is set to further cement that transition.After months of shelter-in-place orders, consumers have become more comfortable shopping from home. That will likely lead to an increase in online Black Friday purchases this year, says Dora Bock, associate professor of marketing at the Harbert College of Business at Auburn University in Alabama.But the changes could go a step beyond that. COVID-19 has illuminated failings in the supply chain, and Thomas believes many consumers will opt for contactless curbside pickup options (as opposed to shipping to their home) to guarantee that the items they’re buying online are actually available — and not out of stock.Still, that doesn’t necessarily mean stores will be ghost towns.“They want something normal,” Thomas says of some shoppers. “I do think that will drive people to go in to see the lights, to see the trees — all the stuff that goes with that experience.”Doorbusters could be deepEven though the experience will look different, Black Friday discounts might be particularly relevant this year, especially as millions of Americans have faced unemployment and other financial hardships in 2020.While consumers have largely focused on purchasing essential items during the pandemic, Bock anticipates competitive prices on discretionary products like apparel and jewelry.Consumers might also have an appetite for traditional Black Friday categories, such as computers. Thomas expects these discounts will be appealing, considering how critical laptops have become as Americans work, learn and interact virtually from home.“There’s a large number of consumers that look forward to Black Friday because it provides them a sense of excitement,” Bock says. “People feel good when they get a good deal.”Retailers still have some planning to doThere are a number of unanswered questions about how Black Friday will look. After all, retailers are still figuring out how to market the holiday shopping season.One possibility? Black Friday may become an extended period, rather than a single day of sales, says Michael Brown, a partner in the consumer practice of Kearney, a global strategy and management consultant.“I’m expecting that Black Friday as we have grown to know it cannot exist in a COVID world,” Brown says.“I think we have to really not think about Black Friday and think more about when the launch of the holiday season will begin. I think that has to be pulled up by retailers as early as November 1,” he says.Throughout the holiday season, stores will have to perform a delicate dance. Shopping may become just as much about public health as it is about discounts.Retailers have merchandise to sell, but promoting in-store only specials could be seen as insensitive by shoppers with preexisting medical conditions, Bock points out.“I think it’s really going to be a balancing act for retailers to encourage sales, encourage people to buy, encourage trust and promote spending — but promote it in a way that shows they care for their customers’ well-being,” Bock says.There’s one more wild card, Brown says. What type of Black Friday shopping environment will state and local governments allow? EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) - A crowd gathered in El Cajon to honor the life of a man, killed in a hit-and-run accident, on the day he was supposed to be married.Steven Johnson - a father of six and a grandfather - was riding his motorcycle to work at a Lakeside trucking company Friday, the 2nd, when he crashed around 5:30 a.m. on southbound Highway 67 just past Willows Road.He never recovered, and passed away Wednesday.Saturday, his fiancé Karlene Moen stood in front of friends and family at their wedding venue, complete with the cake and flowers, and told them how Johnson helped and inspired so many."It's amazing to see how many people's lives he actually did touch because I've always just heard about it and I've never actually seen it," Moen said. Johnson was a sponsor for drug addicts and alcoholics. He was sober almost 16 years, according to Moen. Several men told 10News they're only here today because of Johnson. They said they became sober because Johnson truly believed in them.Moen said she and her fiancé met at an NAA meeting, "he taught me how to live my life sober, he taught me how to love my kids sober, he taught me how to be a mom sober, he taught me how to be a friend sober."As she thought about her wedding day, tears filled her eyes, "we were supposed to be married today, I was supposed to take his hand and unite as one." Wiping away tears she continued, "It's messing me up, and I almost don't want to be here, because it hurts so bad, it, I feel pain in my chest."She fretted about their wedding day, saying a week before the big day she helped him get an outfit. "I didn't get to wear my wedding dress that I picked out especially for him, that I knew that when he looked at me that he would think that I was the most beautiful woman he's seen," she said mournfully.One lasting question in her mind, "I just want to know why? I just want to know what kind of a person you are to not even help him up off the road?"His family wants the woman who left the scene to turn her self in, or someone who knows what happened to come forward, to give them closure. 2098
