She still remembers it like it was yesterday.D.H. approached the Safe Haven Baby Box and pulled it open, watching a little orange backpack filled with resources for surrendering mothers fall out as she placed her newborn inside.Safe Haven Baby Boxes are in four states currently and offer parents a way to safely surrender their newborns.With her baby girl, a handwritten letter would convey the heartbreak, agony, and love of the mother who placed her inside that box. D.H. still says it was the hardest decision she has ever made in her life.We've heard from mothers who have adopted the babies placed in Safe Haven Baby Boxes, but for the first time, we're hearing from a mother on the other side of the box.D.H. is sharing her story to help fight the stigma that seems to follow the mothers who have surrendered their children."These mothers come from all walks of life," Monica Kelsey, founder of Safe Haven Baby Boxes, said. "We have had a Registered Nurse come through our program, a mom with four kids, a single mom, and career dads. This option of surrendering is available to anyone who finds themselves in a crisis if they feel this is the best option for them.""After a mom calls us, the first thing she wants to know is 'Is my baby safe and is my baby healthy'. That speaks volumes about these moms. These moms absolutely love their children; they are just in a crisis that you or I may not understand," Kelsey said.For the safety of the mother and to protect the identity of the child, we will not be using the woman's name in this story.Her StoryD.H.'s story began several months earlier when she found herself unexpectedly pregnant and dealing with outside circumstances she had no control over.This baby wasn't her first, but it would have been the first D.H. would have had to raise as a single mother while trying to navigate a new life she had very little control over.D.H. felt ashamed and alone."Obviously, I knew I was pregnant, and I was trying to decide what I was going to do," D.H. said. "If I was going to try to do it … be a mom … and I just knew that I wasn't going to be capable of it. It wasn't possible. Financially, and all the things I was going through, I wasn't going to be able to do it."Weeks before she was due, D.H. found herself online researching what options she might have once the baby was born. She still hadn't told anyone she was pregnant."I'm still not sure how I kept it a secret," she said.D.H. was working long days —up to 14 hours at a time — throughout her pregnancy while she tried to get her life back in order. She still wasn't sure what to do about the child she would soon birth.Then one morning, just 30 minutes before she was supposed to be at work, the labor began.By the time D.H. thought about calling an ambulance, she knew she wouldn't make it to the hospital in time.After six hours of labor, she gave birth — alone — to a beautiful baby girl.She called her Mila. 2939

Since the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School six years ago, the way law enforcement and citizens handle these events has changed.The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has partnered with a program known as ALERRT, which stands for Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training.The program was created in order to help standardize the response to active shooters and streamline their response in a crisis. "It was important to make sure everybody received the same training, knowing that if that response occurs, it's going to be a multi-agency response,” said Nathaniel McQueen, with Delaware State Police, in an interview with CNN.But all of this occurs once police get to the scene.What about before?"On an average of three minutes, those cops are gonna show up and they are going to take that shooter's attention from you towards them,” says Gordon B. Some city and state governments across the country have made wearing masks in public mandatory. Now, businesses are finding they also need to develop policies for face coverings."No pun intended but there’s no one size fits all here. Employers need to be looking at the state and local laws to determine whether masks are mandatory. I know that several states have mandatory mask requirements in public spaces, so of course they’ll want to look at those laws to make sure they're complying with them," says Amber Clayton, Knowledge Center Director for the Society for Human Resources Management.Clayton says employers will also need to consider employees who may not be able to wear a mask, whether it be for medical or other reasons."Employers may have to potentially provide a reasonable accommodation in those situations. That might look like allowing the person to work from home, taking leave or modifying their workspaces where they're working within an area that is maybe not as much public facing," says Clayton.For medical reasons, employers could require a doctor's note. Whether it's an employee handbook or company-wide email, employers should have some type of documentation so employees and any customers coming into the office are aware of expectations when it comes to wearing face coverings. Valerie Keels, who heads up her HR department at Gavi in Washington, DC, has developed a mask-wearing policy for her office."The building has imposed those restrictions, as well, in the common areas so when people come into the building they have to wear a mask. When they go into the elevator they have to wear a mask. So it's just consistent with what's going in the building," says Keels.Keels has what they call a "Code Red" which means people can come into the office if they register online. It helps them keep track of the number of people in the office space. Once they get to the office, their temperature is taken and they're given a mask to wear for when it's needed.When you're in an enclosed office space, you can take off your mask. "And even when you're at your own work space because we're also respecting social distancing," says Keels.As for enforcing a mask policy, some businesses could come across people who disagree with a face covering policy."Employers have the responsibility to keep the workplaces safe for their employees and if this is something that's required and the employee refused to wear it, then there needs to be something in place to address that - whether it's sending the employee home or providing leave, or making modifications to the worksite," says Clayton.It's important for employers to work with people and their individual situations before resorting to reprimands.
