SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The first of five "fee-free" days at America's national parks falls on Martin Luther King Jr. Day this month.Entrance to any of the country's more than 400 national parks is waived on Jan. 20 in honor of MLK's birthday, including at San Diego's Cabrillo National Monument at the tip of Point Loma.Guests can take in panoramic views of downtown San Diego and the surrounding bay while learning about 16th century explorers and San Diego's discovery in 1542. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The nation's first kitten nursery, established in San Diego, is celebrating its tenth season running.San Diego Humane Society's kitten nursery has cared for more than 10,000 underage, orphaned, and otherwise kittens in need around-the-clock for the last decade, according to the Society.Currently, the nursery has more than 100 orphaned kittens."We are in kitten season," Jackie Noble, with the Humane Society, said. "We usually get two big peaks ... usually goes with the weather. As the weather gets warmer, more kittens are born and that's when we see the majority of our kittens come through the doors."And as Mother's Day nears, prospective owners are searching for lovable kittens to call their own."Yes everyone wants a kitten. We're getting a lot of people asking if they can adopt these babies." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Grinch is back yet again to steal Christmas from San Diego.The Old Globe Theatre's production of "Dr. Suess's How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" returns to San Diego for its run from Nov. 4 to Dec. 24. Back for its 20th year, the holiday classic brings Whoville to the Donald and Darlene Shiley Stage in Balboa Park. The Grinch, played by Edward Watts, will embark on a quest to stop Christmas from gracing the town of Whoville, featuring the songs "This Time of Year," "Santa for a Day," and "Fah Who Doraze."RELATED: Holiday family fun around San Diego this seasonBut the action isn't just on the stage.On Sunday, Nov. 12, the show will kick off with the 12th annual tree lighting outside the Globe with a special performance by the cast for free. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The arsonist who rammed his car into the Raytheon building and set fire to a La Jolla home learned his sentence Tuesday. Daniel Mackinnon, 37, will spend seven years in prison for crimes the Assistant U.S. Attorney described as “politically-motivated.” Early on the morning of Apr. 24, Mackinnon went to the home of a prominent real estate developer. Two adults and three small children were home asleep at the time, prosecutors said. RELATED: Driver arrested after car crashes into defense contractor building in Kearny MesaMackinnon “poured an accelerant onto the door and ignited it,” officials said. “Investigators found remnants of a plastic water bottle, a pry bar and a bottle cap at the scene.” DNA evidence from the bottle cap helped tie Mackinnon to the crime. There were no reports of any injuries. Later the same morning, Mackinnon drove into the Kearny Mesa offices of Raytheon, a defense contractor. The car bounced back, and Mackinnon got out, opening his back hatch, prosecutors said. Moments later, flames erupted from the back of the car and damaged the office building. Prosecutors did not provide details about the political motivation for Mackinnon’s crimes. He had previously committed petty crimes in the early 2000s, including “remaining at the scene of a riot after being arrested at a Southern Kalifornia Anarchist Alliance May Day demonstration,” officials said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The coronavirus pandemic is preventing many seniors in skilled nursing facilities from seeing their families. UC San Diego students are working to help combat their loneliness with their Sunshine 4 Seniors project. Students would spend their weekends visiting seniors as part of a volunteer project before classes were canceled at UC San Diego. The pandemic halted their visits. "We came up with this project, which was creating cards for seniors at St. Paul Senior Services," says student Olivia Michael. The goal of the project is for students to "step in and fill the loneliness and isolation that the senior citizen communities are feeling, especially during this pandemic," says Morgan Montoya. The students say loneliness in seniors can have damaging effects on the brain. "Olivia and I are near-cognitive science majors," says Montoya. "Our majors really helped us to understand the problems that loneliness poses. With senior citizens having an abundance of isolation and loneliness, it can actually deregulate the brain and cause a progression of Alzheimer's or depression."The Sunshine 4 Seniors project launched nearly a month ago. So far, more than 200 cards have been sent to seniors in skilled nursing facilities. The students say there are thousands of seniors who are not allowed to see their loved ones during this time. They hope to spread some sunshine to as many seniors as they can. "The goal is just to get as many people writing cards as possible," says Michael. "Any means that you have to do it, I just encourage you to get started." 1586
