But if you're one of the millions of Americans — roughly four in ten households — who filed back in February, you probably couldn't wait to get your hands on your expected refund.And there's a good chance you put that refund toward a visit to the doctor.That's according to new research by the JPMorgan Chase Institute, which evaluated when Americans in different income and demographic groups file their taxes.Americans who file their taxes early are more likely to receive a larger tax refund. Early filers were also more likely to spend a larger portion of their refund on health care.Related: How to save money on health care in retirementIn fact, American families increase their health care spending by 60% in the very week they receive a tax refund. And those who received their refunds in February increased their health care spending over the following 76 days by 38%, compared with a 22% increase for those who received refunds in March and an 11% increase in April or May.While some high-deductible health plans encourage early-year spending, JPMorgan found that deductibles aren't the motivating force behind this surge.Instead, among the earliest filers, 64% of their health care spending went to services they had been putting off, including dental visits, hospital visits and in-person doctor appointments.What does this mean? It's increasingly clear that families are treating their tax refunds as a zero-interest savings vehicle, the funds of which they're using for important and sometimes crucial expenses like health care.That's problematic for Americans' financial health, because the IRS does not currently give taxpayers control over the timing of their refund payments, outside of choosing when to file your annual refund between January and Tax Day in April. This means it can be challenging or unrealistic to only schedule payments or purchases around your tax refund every spring.It also poses problems for Americans' physical health, because those who rely on this cash infusion to afford health care are likely to delay care.Related: Americans spend more on health care, but have shorter livesGenerally speaking, young people under the age of 35 and those whose take-home pay is less than ,000 are more likely to be early filers because they have a greater need for this cash infusion.Another reason for filing early could be that low-income families are more likely to receive refundable tax credits, such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, money that is not available except through a tax refund. Across all income and age groups, though, people who are owed a larger refund are more likely to file early.Given the link between tax refunds and health care spending, policymakers and employers should consider making changes that would allow consumers to access funds throughout the year. Policymakers might consider offering periodic tax refund payments -- perhaps quarterly payments so that families wouldn't have to defer care until tax season.Another solution is to make the timing of these payments even more flexible and frequent for those who require urgent health care. This could include an option to apply for emergency funds taken out of your upcoming refund, or an option to file at a different time of year and receive a refund based on year-to-date income.Related: How to file your taxes for the first timeBy fixing one of the largest cash flow events to happen between mid-February and mid-May every year, we're virtually guaranteeing that some Americans will have to defer care.Finally, we should encourage employers to offer alternative savings vehicles, like an employer-based sidecar account. This account would share many of the same features of a tax refund, but give consumers more direct control over when they access funds.These could include built-in commitments and "set-it-and-forget-it" transparency, which would enable consumers the option of a one-time payroll election that recurs with every paycheck, locking them into an annual savings choice similar to other employer-sponsored benefits.By better understanding the connection between health care spending and tax season, we can help more families manage their finances to ensure they're getting health care when they need it, not just when they file to Uncle Sam.The-CNN-Wire 4734

EL CAJON (KGTV) -- A motorcyclist who crashed into a parked truck on a residential street in Fletcher Hills has died, El Cajon police said Tuesday.Shortly after the crash, some off-duty nurses rushed to help the critically injured motorcyclist, identified Wednesday as 36-year-old Julian Garcia, allowing emergency crews to rush him to the hospital.Jennifer Lepari said she heard a “loud boom” on Valley Lake Drive near Valley Mill Road around 8:30 p.m. Monday. “It almost shook the house. It was really, really loud,” she said.Lepari and her husband Jerome are both nurses. Jerome quickly used his belt as a tourniquet on the rider’s leg to staunch the bleeding while Jennifer applied pressure and spoke with dispatchers, according to neighbors.“With the amount of blood he lost and the time it took [for emergency crews to arrive], even the cops said [the rider] wouldn’t have lasted if [Jerome] hadn’t done that,” Lepari said.El Cajon police say the motorcyclist struck a parked work truck on Valley Mill Road for unknown reasons. Investigators believe speed may have been a factor but the crash is still under investigation, Lt. Randy Soulard said.A third off-duty nurse who lives around the block also tended to the badly injured rider, neighbors said.“It was awesome to see the people with that sort of medical experience jump in and not hesitate,” said a neighbor named Lisa.Once police arrived, an officer applied a second tourniquet to the rider’s leg, Lt. The sights and sounds will be virtual, thanks to the hard work of long-time El Cajon business owner, Patti Shryock. Besides running Cameo Janitorial and Paper Supply, she's also a true historian of the Mother Goose Parade."I've been with Mother Goose since 1985," says Shryock. "I love to see Mother Goose out there, and people come up, especially the kids, and hold her. Then you get the parents talking about their memories of the parade, and being in their child's same position. This has been going on now for 74 years."And just like the parade, her business is also a fixture in El Cajon, opening its doors back in 1963. Shryock and her brother took over full operation in the mid-1980's."My dad passed away in 1985, and my mom in 1990. However, they gave us enough background, and we worked enough in the business, where we were able to continue it on," she said.Shryock says over time a lot of hard work and great employees have created a lot of success. But now they are facing an obstacle as they have never seen before, and that would be the COVID-19 pandemic."I never saw it coming," Shryock says.Uncertain times means they've had to think outside the box"Sanitizer wipes, I started making some myself," she added.Shryock and her team at Cameo Janitorial and Paper Supply have persevered to keep the business going. The same can also be said about her effort to keep this year's Mother Goose Parade afloat. EL CAJON (CNS and KGTV) - An East County man who admitted molesting an underage girl faces up to 10 years in state prison when he's sentenced March 27, prosecutors said.Shaun Crocker, 34, pleaded guilty Thursday at the El Cajon courthouse to two felony counts of committing a lewd act on a child for touching the unidentified victim, who was under the age of 14, inappropriately between September and November 2018.Prosecutors did not disclose the girl's exact age, nor would they confirm whether the defendant was related to sex offender Matthew Hedge, whose case drew headlines years after his conviction due to a judge's controversial decision to lift Hedge's sexually violent predator status and release him from custody without supervision.RELATED: Son of sex offender suspected of child molestation in San Diego CountyFollowing Crocker's arrest last year, a source told 10News that Crocker is Hedge's son.Hedge pleaded guilty in 1989 to molesting four children in the San Diego area and served 12 years in prison. He was committed to the sexually violent predator treatment program in 1997, but was released into outpatient treatment in 2005 in a trailer outside Donovan State Prison in Otay Mesa.His outpatient status was revoked within six weeks for violating terms of his release.After more than two years of in-patient hospital treatment, the court in October 2008 again granted Hedge's petition to be placed in outpatient treatment.
