International observers from the Organization of American States say they saw no instances of fraud or voting irregularities in the U.S. presidential election. The delegation included 28 experts and observers from 13 countries who observed the election process in in Georgia, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan and the District of Columbia. COVID-19 prevented a broader coalition of experts. The OAS says the Election Day was peaceful, although there were efforts to intimidate poll workers as the votes were counted, and says the country’s mail-in ballots were a secure system. The report says the OAS supports “the right of all contesting parties in an election, to seek redress before the competent legal authorities when they believe they have been wronged.”“It is critical however, that candidates act responsibly by presenting and arguing legitimate claims before the courts, not unsubstantiated or harmful speculation in the public media,” the OAS says. 955

It's been a brutal week for many big American retailers.JCPenney announced Friday that it will cut 360 jobs at its stores and corporate headquarters. That's on top of the more than 5,000 layoffs in 2017 after JCPenney decided to close nearly 140 stores. The struggling retailer also said that its earnings and sales for this year will be worse than what Wall Street analysts were expecting. Shares of JCPenney plunged nearly 10% in early trading.JCPenney wasn't the only prominent bricks and mortar chain to report poor results this week.Barnes & Noble posted a quarterly loss and a drop in sales Thursday morning, sending the bookstore's shares to an all-time low.Victoria apparently needs a new Secret too. L Brands, the owner of the lingerie seller and Bath & Body Works, plunged 14% Thursday after its outlook turned out to be more devilish than angelic.Nordstrom, which is trying to go private, failed to impress investors with its latest results after the closing bell Thursday. Its stock fell 6% Friday morning. And the other shoe dropped at Foot Locker. The sneaker and athletic apparel company's sales missed forecasts and its outlook was weak as well. Foot Locker's stock dove 7% Friday morning.Related: The one sector of retail that's hiring -- a lotAll this bad news comes at a time when the retail industry is undergoing a massive transformation as more and more consumers shop online.People are still spending. They are just doing so on their phones as opposed to at the mall. That's been great for e-commerce leader Amazon, which has continued to post impressive sales growth. Its stock is also up more than 25% this year and is near a record high.Coye Nokes, partner in the consumer and retail practice at strategy consulting firm OC&C, said that the threat from Amazon is clearly the biggest challenge for most traditional retailers."Amazon is still coming and it is entering even more categories," she said. But she added that there are some retailers that have been fighting back and have done a good job of boosting their own digital operations.Related: Macy's is back! Stock up on solid salesMacy's shares rallied earlier this week after the iconic retailer topped analysts' forecasts and said that online sales continued to grow at a double-digit pace.Best Buy also posted strong sales in its stores and digital operations on Thursday. The electronics retailer's stock even rose 4% while the broader market tanked on fears of a global trade war.And there are other traditional retailers that are holding up well.Gap shares bucked the market's downward trend Friday, rising 5% after it posted solid results. The Gap's Old Navy brand is on fire. Its same-store sales were up 9% during the holiday quarter.Department store chain Dillard's topped forecasts earlier this week too, sending its shares up nearly 17% on the news.So it's not all doom and gloom for retail. The industry is in the midst of a shakeout that will lead to some casualties and some big winners. But the American consumer is still alive and well.The-CNN-Wire? & ? 2018 Cable News Network, Inc., a Time Warner Company. All rights reserved. 3147

In the wake of COVID-19, doctors officers switched to treatment through telehealth to keep patients safe. For addicts and recovering addicts, the idea of getting help though virtual connections was a little different.“I’ve continually gone to meetings for 39 years, and now all of a sudden I’m not going to meetings,” Kathleen Gargan said. She’s been sober since 1981. “Thirty-nine years. I’m very lucky.”She has been going to meetings with different recovery groups for decades.“I think that's what’s kept me sober all this time is continually going to meetings and being reminded of what my life was like when I drank,” she explained. Most recently through LifeRing, a peer-to-peer support organization. For the last few months, group meetings have been mostly non-existent. The COVID-19 pandemic forced support groups to move online, which has its pros and cons.“It has made treatment available to some people who otherwise wouldn't be able to get it because they're in rural areas or far away, but it is lacking some of that in person interaction, accountability,” Doctor Christian Hopfer, an addiction psychiatrist, said. He is with the UCHealth Center for Dependency, Addiction and Rehabilitation in Colorado. “A lot of the treatment is connecting with other people in person.”Quarantinis, virtual happy hours, physical isolation. Market research firm Nielsen found that in-store alcohol sales growth for the week of March 31 spiked 54 percent compared to the year before. For the entire month of April, online alcohol sales were up 400 percent or more compared to the same time in 2019.“We have patients who lost their jobs, were at home, and just started drinking all day,” Dr. Hopfer said. He said he’s even had some patients show up to virtual sessions intoxicated.Still -- he says virtual support is better than no support.“We felt having a telemedicine option was incredibly important to people. Both for people who live in an area where they don't have resources available for addiction treatment, but also for people who have busy lives,” Doctor Abe Malkin, a Medical Advisor for Monument, said.Monument is a new platform aimed at connecting patients to doctors.“Initially, the founder Mike Russell created Monument through his own journey to change his relationship with alcohol,” Dr. Malkin said. “Due to the pandemic and to social distancing and stay-at-home orders, people have had to deal with increasing anxiety, feelings of isolation, which have further triggered relapses in the community.”Monument doesn’t replace the detox process, but it works for those looking for a treatment center, a doctor to connect with, or for peer support.“We’re really trying to make this more welcoming, more inviting to people. Something they can feel that they’re part of a community without having to depart from their normal daily routines,” Dr. Malkin said.Even with new platforms to help with connection, Gargan says nothing beats in-person interaction.“Since we have the Zoom meetings, they feel great about it, they don't have to get out of their pajamas ….and they don't have to drive anywhere,” she said. “Face to face experience is, in general, richer.” 3174

IRVINE, Calif. (KGTV) -- A new study claims that hookah could be more dangerous than other forms of smoking. According to the University of California study, one in five college students in the US and Europe have tried it. According to researchers who conducted the study, one draw from a pipe can contain as many substances as an entire cigarette. “Hookah mainstream smoke – that which is directly inhaled by the user – has many toxic and harmful chemicals, such as nicotine, which can lead to tobacco addiction; irritating carbonyl compounds; and benzine, a known carcinogen,” said lead author Veronique Perraud, a UCI assistant project scientist in the Department of Chemistry. “And due to the greater volume inhaled for every puff and the longer duration of a smoking session, the hookah oftentimes delivers a higher dose of those chemicals to the smoker.”The study also found that the hookah produces an outsized amount of carbon monoxide mainly due to the burning charcoal. According to the university, the study is the first to look at ultrafine particles. Particles researchers say pose a significant health risk. “One of the big myths about hookah usage is that the water in the bowl actually filters out the toxic chemicals, providing a shield for the smoker,” Perraud noted. “In the study, we show that this is not the case for most of the gases and that, possibly due to its cooling effect, water actually promotes ultrafine particle formation.” 1465

In its first game in four months, the MLS returned to action in Orlando on Wednesday between hometown Orlando City and Inter Miami CF. But before the two teams kicked off the long-awaited return to team sports in the US, the two squads stood silently for several minutes in solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement. The Memorial Day death of George Floyd while in police custody prompted national unrest and protest over incidents of police brutality. The return to play is part of a six-week tournament being held in Orlando. The MLS said it will not play the national anthem before games during the tournament.During the moment of silence, players in the starting lineup took a knee while reserves and players from other MLS squads stood around the field with one fist held high into the air.The protests were akin to ones led by former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who kneeled during the preegame national anthem during the 2016 season. The MLS said that members of the Black Players for Change promotes the fight for racial equality and human rights, as the group was formed to give Black players in MLS a voice and assist in making systemic change both inside and outside the league. 1207
