SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Officials have called off the search and rescue operation for eight service members who went missing after an amphibious assault vehicle accident off San Clemente Island last week. The 15th Marine Expeditionary Force said in a release Sunday that all eight members — seven Marines and one sailor — are presumed dead after it was determined, "that there was little probability of a successful rescue given the circumstances of the incident."Officials say they searched for 40 hours covering more than 1,000 square nautical miles in their efforts to find the missing service members.RELATED: Camp Pendleton Marine dies, 8 missing in training accident off San Clemente Island“It is with a heavy heart, that I decided to conclude the search and rescue effort,” said Col. Christopher Bronzi, 15th MEU Commanding Officer. “The steadfast dedication of the Marines, Sailors, and Coast Guardsmen to the persistent rescue effort was tremendous.”Officials said their efforts will now turn to recovery of the missing service members. An offshore supply vessel HOS Dominator, as well as Undersea Rescue Command, are surveying the seafloor to help.“Our thoughts and prayers have been, and will continue to be with our Marines’ and Sailor’s families during this difficult time,” said Bronzi. “As we turn to recovery operations we will continue our exhaustive search for our missing Marines and Sailor.”RELATED: Safety examined after deadly Southern California amphibious assault vehicle accidentOn July 30, 15 Marines and one sailor were participating in the training exercise off the coast of San Clemente Island when the AAV began taking on water and sank. Of the 16 service members on board, eight Marines were rescued, one Camp Pendleton Marine died at the hospital, and two others were hospitalized in critical condition as of Saturday. The cause of the accident is still being investigated. The names of the Marines and sailor will be released 24 hours after their next of kin are notified, officials added. The USS John Finn, the USS Makin Island, the USS Somerset, and the USS San Diego all assisted in the search and rescue effort, as well as 11 U.S. Navy SH-60 helicopters, multiple Navy and Marine Corps small boats, the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Forrest Rednour and a Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter. 2324

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - One of San Diego's most iconic buildings is getting an upgrade for the city's 250th-anniversary celebration. The Junipero Serra Museum will have 0,000 worth of renovations done this summer. The work will focus mainly on the exterior, repairing cracked and deteriorating stucco on the walls and adding a fresh coat of paint."We needed to move forward and return this building to the way it looked in 1929 because it is an important icon to the San Diego Region," says San Diego History Center CEO Bill Lawrence."It will gleam just like it did in 1929 when 40,000 people came to this spot for the dedication."The museum was established 90 years ago on the spot believed to be where Junipero Serra set up Mission San Diego, the first European settlement in California, in 1769. Archaeological research now shows the museum is about 100 yards away from the original site. It's been more than a decade since any structural work was done on the building. New roof tiles were added in 2008.The History Center raised 0,000 from the board and other donors to get work started on the West side of the building. They're hoping the City and County can help them fund the remaining 0,000 to complete work on the East side and the North Tower. In addition to the exterior work, the museum will unveil a new welcoming exhibit. That's been in the works for about seven years and has cost million."If you think about 1769 to 2019, it's 250 years. That seems like a long time," says Museum Collections and Education Vice President Dr. Tina Zarpour. "But humans have been living here for 12,000 years."The new exhibit will feature the stories of the Kumeyaay Nation and their contributions to San Diego before Serra arrived. Zarpour says it's essential to include that story to get the full breadth of San Diego History."This is a very layered, complex site," she says. "It means different things to different people. So we want to bring all of that to light.""Understanding all of the aspects, the good history, the bad history, is part of the process of bringing to light the complexity, the richness and what we as a community need to understand," says Lawrence.Part of the restoration also includes building a fourth flag pole on the grounds. That will hold the flag of the Kumeyaay Nation. The first phase of the work will be done by July 16th, the day recognized as the actual 250th anniversary. Museum officials hope the second phase of the work will be finished by the end of 2019.Anyone interested in donating to the museum's restoration fund should call the development team at 619-232-6203. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Providing hungry children with food during the school year is a problem many institutions seek out solutions to, but may struggle with during the summer months outside of school.Sweetwater Union High School District is offering free meals to children at two locations from June 10 - 28 as part of their "Seamless Summer" feeding program. Children must be 18-years-old and younger to qualify for the free meal.No registration is needed and the meals are absolutely free, according to the school district.Children can receive the free meals at Montgomery High School (3250 Palm Ave., San Diego) or Sweetwater Union High School (2900 Highlands Ave., National City) Monday through Friday from 11:15 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. 740

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Now that Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration, San Diego County is one step closer to getting more people vaccinated.Moderna says its vaccine is safe and 94% effective. It will come in two doses taken 28 days apart. This week, there are two county hospitals that are expecting shipments of Moderna's vaccine. According to hospitals officials, the first shipment will arrive at Rady Children’s Hospital on Monday. It's unclear how many doses of the vaccine the hospital will receive.UC San Diego is also scheduled to receive their Moderna COVID-19 shipment this week.Gov. Gavin Newsom announced on Twitter that California is expecting 672,000 doses of the Moderna vaccine. It’s still unclear how many of those will be given to San Diego.By the end of the week and with two vaccines available, the federal government expects there will be 7.9 million doses delivered to more than 3,700 locations across the country. The distribution of the Moderna vaccine comes as the Centers for Diease Control and Prevention releases new recommendations about who should get the vaccine next. The CDC says frontline essential workers and adults ages 75 and older should be the priority in the next round. The agency describes essential workers as firefighters, police, teachers, and school staff. Those working in food and agricultural sectors, as well as U.S. Postal Service employees, public transit workers, and grocery store workers would be in that category.San Diego County has not said if the CDC's new recommendations will have any impact on their vaccine roll out plan.Until a wide distribution is available, the governor asks people to stay at home and wear a mask. 1734

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Parents rallied at Poway Unified District Headquarters during their monthly board meeting, asking them to pause on proposed plans to bring a Costco to land zoned to build a school. The vacant lot is at the corner of Camino Del Sur and Carmel Valley Road and was labeled a surplus by the Poway Unified School District. That means they don't need it and believe they have enough schools in the area.Parent Gianni Nguyen said that's not true, "in our particular area the schools are impacted, so no."Nguyen said she doesn't mind the idea of creating mixed use retail, restaurants and a Costco, but she was angered by the process the board went through to get the deal."I felt like we were just robbed... We just want to be part of that process, bring us to the table, give us a voice, let us share with you what our opinions are," she said. The board voted unanimously at their September meeting to pursue a long term lease with Costco, that spans decades. Nguyen said the community was blindsided."I have four kids in the public school district, four young kids, my oldest is only 12, so I am very passionate about this," she said looking away. She hopes the rally makes the board pause and reconsider moving forward on this deal.Nguyen added, "we're going to unite and say we do have a voice and there should be a choice and you guys should be in there to represent us and if you're not representing us, who are you representing?"The deal was not on the agenda Thursday. 1493
