SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Federal agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration's San Diego Field Division made scores of arrests and seized thousands of pounds of methamphetamine during a recently concluded six-month crackdown on Mexican cartels that distribute the drug in the United States, the federal agency reported Thursday.Personnel with the local DEA unit, whose jurisdiction comprises San Diego and Imperial counties, conducted 29 investigations, captured 81 suspects, and impounded 4,462 pounds of methamphetamine and 9,000 in drug proceeds during the enforcement effort, dubbed Operation Crystal Shield."Although (the region has) been locked down since March due to COVID, DEA has been working hard to stop ruthless cartels from bringing methamphetamine into our communities," said John Callery, special agent in charge of the agency's San Diego-area division.Nationwide, agents completed more than 750 investigations, resulting in nearly 1,840 arrests and the seizure of more than 28,560 pounds of methamphetamine, .3 million in drug proceeds, and 284 firearms during the operation."In the months leading up to the launch of Operation Crystal Shield, communities across the United States experienced a surge of methamphetamine," DEA Acting Administrator Timothy Shea said. "The COVID pandemic locked down many communities and impacted legitimate businesses, but the drug trade continued."The crackdown was launched on Feb. 20, after investigators identified major methamphetamine trafficking hubs in Atlanta, Dallas, El Paso, Houston, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Phoenix, San Diego and St. Louis. Together, the nine cities accounted for more than 75 percent of methamphetamine seized by the DEA in 2019."We will continue to be relentless in our pursuit of criminals who continually attempt to poison our schools, communities and environment with methamphetamine and its residual carnage," Callery said. 1921

The grants announced today will also significantly expand the Intertribal Court's capacity to provide victim services to all tribal members.'' 1279

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A San Diego-based group of environmental activists launched a 100-day campaign today calling on the region's congressional representatives to support the so-called Green New Deal to mitigate the effects and exacerbation of climate change.San Diego 350 hopes to convince Reps. Susan Davis and Scott Peters, D- San Diego, and Duncan Hunter, R-Alpine, to support the resolution by inundating their offices with calls and postcards from constituents between now and the August congressional recess.Reps. Mike Levin, D-Dana Point, and Juan Vargas, D-San Diego, are already co-sponsors of House Resolution 109, which supports the drafting and adoption of a Green New Deal. The proposal would reduce greenhouse gas emissions to a net-zero level, invest in infrastructure and shepherd the country's economic and energy sectors away from fossil fuels and coal by 2030.Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-New York, first proposed the concept and introduced the resolution in February."Over 80 years ago, (Franklin Delano Roosevelt) and the Democratic Party created a bold plan to address the biggest economic crisis our nation hadever faced,'' said Masada Disenhouse, San Diego 350's executive director. "Thestakes are even higher now.''San Diego 350 organized demonstrations at Peters' and Hunter's offices in February to call on them to support he proposal. The organization has also held sit-ins and delivered petitions to members of the county's delegation asking them to co-sponsor the resolution. To date, Davis, Peters and Hunter have not done so. Last month, Peters proposed a divergent plan to stem the tide of climate change, which he called a climate playbook. Peters' proposal includes more than 50 bills introduced by both Democrats and Republicans since 2017.San Diego 350 representatives said the organization plans to hold a series of town hall discussions through Aug. 20, when Congress will go on its summer recess, to discuss constituent concerns regarding climate change. The town halls will be held in Davis, Peters and Hunter's respective districts."(Eighty) years from now, will our great grandchildren know that we did everything we could to fight climate change?'' Disenhouse said during a demonstration outside Saturday's Roosevelt Dinner, held by the San Diego County Democratic Party. "Let's start by ensuring that our representatives step up and take action to make the Green New Deal a reality!'' 2437

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - An elderly disabled woman was assaulted and seriously injured in downtown San Diego, police said Saturday. The victim, a 73-year-old homeless woman who uses a walker, was attacked near the corner of Fourth Avenue and B Street at 10:10 p.m. Friday, according to Lt. Matt Dobbs of the San Diego Police Department's homicide unit. She was taken to the hospital where she underwent emergency surgery, the lieutenant said. Because of the serious nature of the woman's injuries, investigators from the SDPD's homicide unit were called to the scene."Detectives are collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses," Dobbs said. "A man was seen in an altercation with the victim. He is described as a Black male in his forties, approximately six-feet tall and weighing 250 pounds."The suspect was wearing a white tank top and blue jeans and was last seen walking eastbound on 400 C Street, Dobbs said. The victim has been identified, but her name was not immediately released.Anyone with information on the attack was asked to call the homicide unit at 619-531-2293 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477. 1113
