The Camp Pendleton Marine was in a severe car accident in 2016. He was hospitalized for six months and had to re-learn how to walk again."One minute I'm being a Marine, the next I'm in the hospital confused and dazed, I couldn't walk, I had no idea what happened," said Sanders. Today he suffers from memory problems and weakness on his left side, but Sanders is far more accepting of his injury."Life with a brain injury is hard, but it's not impossible."Sanders is dually enrolled at San Diego Miramar College and will complete an Associate in Arts in Kinesiology for Transfer Degree. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A global recruitment company tells 10News there is a concern that the healthcare system is going to be over-run by patients.It brings up questions whether San Diego County has enough nurses to staff hospitals and medical centers if the coronavirus pandemic goes on for an extended period."The problem that we're seeing now, post-pandemic and coronavirus, is that those nurses can't flock to any one area to support people because the problem is, they have to support locally where they are," said Jon Griffith with the recruitment company GQR. Griffith explained there were supply and demand issues with nurses before COVID-19. Now travel nurses, who would typically fill the void are needed in every state, and not necessarily available to travel."We're seeing people called out of retirement," he said. "Nurses and physicians alike being requested to come out and support. Essentially what we're trying to do at GQR is to tap into those resources or new grad nurses, retired nurses, wherever we can to give that local support to these hospitals to try and mitigate that risk."Griffith told 10News the hospitals they've spoken with are aware of potential challenges and are gearing up to make sure people have their healthcare needs met."They are heroes alright," Griffith said. "We see this all on social media. They are on the frontlines still giving great patient care and focusing on that continuity of care and that right there is what this is all about. Kaiser PermanenteWe are working with our public health partners to manage all aspects of the health care delivery continuum, and so far, our plans are working even as conditions, needs and priorities change. As we do every flu season, we have contingency plans in place to manage both higher numbers of patients in our facilities and illness among staff. Out of extreme caution as we respond to the challenge of coronavirus, employees who may have been exposed to the virus will remain at home for a 14-day observation period. We are able to manage this in part with fully licensed or certified seasonal contract staff. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 28-year-old was stabbed while trying to break up a fight in Pacific Beach early Sunday morning, police say. According to police, the stabbing took place on the 800 block of Garnet Avenue just after midnight. The 28-year-old was walking when he saw a fight break out between a man and a woman. Police say the victim tried to break up the fight when he and the suspect got into a fight. At that point, police say a third person joined the fight when the victim was kneed in the face and stabbed twice in the abdomen. According to police, the victim didn’t know he’d been stabbed until he got home. His injuries were non-life threatening. 666

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego-based Institute of Public Strategies reminded residents Tuesday that reduced alcohol usage plays a large part in suicide prevention and increased mental health, especially among teenagers and young adults.According to the San Diego County Medical Examiner, alcohol use was a factor in 30.8 percent of county suicides in 2016. Data from the National Alliance on Mental Health shows that roughly 29 percent of people with a diagnosed mental illness abuse drugs and/or alcohol. The abuse of alcohol can mask conditions like anxiety and depression, and can also impair judgment and spur impulsive behavior -- two factors that lead to suicidal tendencies, according to IPS.The risk for teenagers and young adults is especially high because alcohol and drug abuse can hamper mental and physical development. California school districts with students in grades 7-12 are required to develop policies that aid in preventing suicide and reducing the risk of suicide. Teachers are also trained to recognize the signs of drug and alcohol abuse among teens and young adults.According to IPS, which focuses on public health and safety issues, and the San Diego County Office of Education, helping youth learn about the dangers of alcohol abuse is one of the most important suicide prevention tools educators can use."It is common to see substance use disorder coupled with mental disorders,'' said Heather Nemour, project specialist for the SDCOE's Student Support Services department. "Understanding the role of substance use in suicidal behavior and how to intervene early is a critical component of school staff training in reducing youth suicides.''Local policy can also help reduce alcohol abuse in all demographics, according to the nonprofit, which advocates taking steps to increase alcohol taxes, limit alcohol sales to a certain number of outlets and enforce limits on when alcohol can be sold, using tools like blue laws, to promote healthy lifestyle choices and reduce the risks of abuse and suicide. 2038
