Cereal has become a breakfast staple for over a century, and it’s being celebrated Thursday with National Cereal Day. Cereal is so popular, there are now places like Cereal Box in Arvada, Colorado popping up all over the place. The evolution of the breakfast food began more than 150 years ago, when the first cold breakfast cereal called Granula was invented in 1863 by James Caleb Jackson. A few years later, Dr. John Harvey Kellogg ran a health spa in Battle Creek, Michigan, where he created Corn Flakes. One of Kellogg’s patients, C.W. Post wanted to get in on the cereal creation and invented Grape Nuts. "About 1910, at one point, Battle Creek had about 100 cereal companies," says Kimber Thomson with the Calhoun County Visitors Bureau in Michigan. Thomson says because of Kellogg and Post, Battle Creek is known as “Cereal City USA.” Cereal really took off during the era of television, when cereal was advertised between Saturday morning cartoons.Tony the Tiger was the first animated cereal cartoon. The tiger, along with dozens of other cereal cartoons, brought the sugary treat into pop culture. Can you guess the best-selling cereal of all time? It’s Honey Nut Cheerios. 1202
Christopher Columbus changed the world by connecting Europe to the Americas. He is also accused of committing brutal acts against indigenous people. So on Columbus Day, one teacher wore a t-shirt that read “Columbus was a murderer.”“I wanted to wear this shirt to spark discussion,” said Emma Howland-Bolton. She says she wanted to have a conversation with her fifth-grade students at Clipper Multicultural Magnet Honors Academy in the Detroit Public Schools Community District, about how there are different perspectives. But instead, a school administrator asked her to take off the shirt. She soon feared she would be disciplined.“I was informed that my shirt was my opinion and I countered with it is a fact,” Howland-Bolton said. 747
Dozens of organizations lined up outside the Toys for Tots warehouse in Aurora on Monday morning to pick up their orders of toys for the holiday season. Many of them had planned to give out gifts in the coming days but were told when they arrived that there were not enough toys to fill everyone's order. Standing in line since 8 a.m., Jody Nickerson, who went in to get her order, said the warehouse looks completely empty inside. "Many of us were saying in line, 'We’ll even take half of what we requested,' at least to give some of them some gifts and then work from there," Nickerson said. Volunteer coordinator with Toys for Tots, Tasha Gallegos, said the reason for there not being enough toys is because of the higher demand and less donations this year. "Today what we have going on is we have many agencies here picking up toys, scheduled to pick up toys, and we can’t accommodate them because the warehouse is very low on toys. We didn’t reach our goal." Toys for Tots will stay open and will be accepting donations through Thursday. CINCINNATI -- The Cincinnati Zoo announced they euthanized a 22-year-old white lion on Monday, citing age-related health issues. Zoo officials said they made the difficult decision to euthanize the lion, Prosperity, because zookeepers observed her mobility and quality of life decrease over a period of several months. The median life expectancy for white lions is 16 years. Zoo officials attribute Prosperity's longevity to the special geriatric enrichment, diet and care she received from their care team. 520
