SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Loved ones are mourning the loss of a young South Bay woman to COVID-19.In mid-September, Elvira Martinez became the first in her family to come down with COVID-19 symptoms. She tested positive and was hospitalized days later. Around the same time, her daughter Cassie, who lived with her mother at a home in Nestor, started feeling sick."Her first symptoms were a cough and then a fever in after that," said Cassie's boyfriend Ricardo Ferreyra.A week later, Ferreyra brought her to the ER."She couldn't hold down food, barely able to stand up," said Ferreyra.She was admitted and diagnosed with COVID-related myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle. Her brother David says in the next 24 hours, she would suffer two heart attacks. On Saturday, Cassie Martinez, who had no underlying conditions, died at the age of 29."I miss her so much. She had the beautiful personality of anyone I've ever known. She walked into a room, and it lit up," said David Martinez."I'm heartbroken, in a million pieces. She was so caring, put everybody else first," said Ferreyra.Ferreyra says it was love at first sight the day he met her at the insurance company they both worked at more than eight years ago."She captivated me and has done so ever since that day," said Ferreyra.He had decided to propose to her, possibly on their eight-year anniversary in mid-October."I wanted to take her out on a sailboat, spend some time together and propose in the middle of the ocean ... She is my soulmate, somebody I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. We had so many plans," said Ferreyra.Family members aren't sure how they contracted the virus. Both Cassie and her mother were taking precautions and staying close to home. Her mother remains on a ventilator in an ICU.A Gofundme campaign has been set up to help the family with expenses. 1856

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds welcomed veterans home Sunday from their honor flight to the nation's capital where they visited war memorials, Arlington National Cemetery and other landmarks.Sixty-four veterans from WWII and the Korean War flew out Friday. The Honor Flights are free for veterans. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Local supporters of both Joe Biden and Donald Trump were watching the election vote count closely throughout Friday.Ellen Nash, who heads the San Diego chapter of the Black American Association of Califorina, a minority advocacy group, put up her Biden/Harris yard sign about a month ago.During the election season, she helped organize a voter registration campaign. Since election night, it's been a constant case of the nerves."Incredibly excited, praying night and day," said Nash.Her eyes have been glued to the television and coverage of the vote count. Throughout Friday, her candidate edged closer to being declared the winner."I will feel relieved that the trauma is over. I'm speaking as a black woman who has been under significant trauma the last four years, in terms of some of the language and behavior of the leader of the free world. Hopeful change is coming," said Nash.There is no questioning her dislike of President Trump, but on this day, she is focused on the country’s future."I believe Biden can bring this country together. I believe he can help us heal as a nation," said Nash.It's a different opinion for local Trump supporter, Blake Marnell.During the campaign, Marnell garnered national attention for wearing a brick wall suit, illustrating his support of President Trump’s border security policy. Trump even called him up on stage, as Marnell attended some 15 rallies where the president appeared."He has the right to make these legal moves. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Local VFW posts are bracing for the new restrictions to kick-in on Saturday.The restrictions result from an increase in COVID-19 cases in the county, putting the county in the state's purple tier, the tier with the toughest covid-19 related restrictions.Mike Hill, the post commander at VFW 5985 in Pacific Beach, says they are already struggling to make ends meet during the pandemic because of the restrictions."There are 22 VFW posts and more American Legion posts through San Diego County, and all of us rely on having events and having people coming to our canteen, which is sort of military for a bar and spend money there, and that helps support us," Hill said. "We've eaten up most of our savings to pay the bills while we've been closed."He says they have relied on donations so far and will be needing more the longer the pandemic lasts."I will tell you the members, and I will be dialing for dollars," Hill said. He says they will start within their members first, then the community."We'll reach out to the community and hope that some of them will value this place that's been in the community for 90 years and let it still be a home for veterans to be around other veterans," he said.VFW 5985 has been closed most days except Tuesdays and Fridays to make meals for dozens of veterans, their families, and those who need it.
