NOGALES, Ariz. – In the war on drugs, the U.S.-Mexico border is the front line.According to Customs and Border Protection, the pandemic is changing how the cartel and other drug organizations are getting narcotics across and into the United States.“Initially we were seeing small football-shaped bundles [full of drugs] being thrown over the fence,” said Sabri Dickman, the border patrol agent in charge along a 33-mile stretch of border near Nogales, Arizona. “We’ve seen that expand to backpack operations with 100-plus pounds to catching vehicles loaded with 600-plus pounds.”The Nogales border crossing is one of the most exploited by Mexican drug organizations. According to CBP, of the more than 200 known underground tunnels that are used to traffic drugs across the southern border, 114 are located in Nogales.It also is one of the busiest as the Mariposa Port of Entry, the main thoroughfare between the countries in Nogales, ushers million in merchandise between the United States and Mexico each day, according to CBP.Mariposa Port Director Michael Humphries says 98% of the traffic that comes through the port is legal, but the 2% is now being used to traffic more hard narcotics like fentanyl, a synthetic opioid similar to morphine, but around 50 to 100 times more potent which makes it lethal even in small doses. Humphries says the hard narcotics are smaller, making them easier to conceal and transport as more can be trafficked in one trip.“We’ve seen an increase in fentanyl over the last year,” said Humphries. “Nogales is a small city [of] 20,000 people. Those tablets of fentanyl weren’t coming to the border. It was going way beyond. It was going to Vermont, and Ohio, Kentucky, and Detroit.”Humphries says in June alone, CBP seized 875,000 tablets of fentanyl from smugglers. It was part of a year that saw officers seize 9,500 pounds of methamphetamine, 900 pounds of fentanyl, and 1,000 pounds of heroine, even though traffic through the port has decreased 60 to 70% because of travel restrictions imposed because of the pandemic.Humphries says those restrictions have led drug organizations to recruit more Americans to smuggle their drugs instead of Mexican or Central American nationals, since U.S. citizens can travel more freely across the border. 2290

New research from AAA shows too many senior citizen drivers are not having conversations about when they should stop driving.AAA says that by the year 2030, 1 in 5 drivers will be over the age of 65, which is why the company is urging people to have conversations with their older family members sooner rather than later.According to the study, 83 percent of older drivers report never having a conversation with family or a doctor about their safe driving ability.  The report states that those who do only do so after being involved in a crash or other driving incidents.AAA recommends having conversations with seniors before you start seeing red flags.Here are things to keep in mind when beginning a dialogue with your loved one:Start early and talk often. Make sure you stay positive, and make sure they know the focus is on their own safety.Avoid generalizations about older drivers’ abilities.Have a one-on-one conversation. Doing it with the entire family can make a driver feel alienated.Stick to facts. Focus on a medical condition or medication that might make driving unsafe, and don’t assume their driving should be stopped altogether.Plan together. Let the driver play an active role in planning for their “driving retirement.”In 2016, more than 200,000 senior drivers were injured in traffic crashes. Northwestern Memorial Hospital near Chicago says it has successfully completed two life-saving double lung transplants on COVID-19 patients — the first known procedures on virus patients in the U.S.The procedures were conducted on a 28-year-old woman and a 62-year-old man earlier this summer.According to a press release from Northwestern Medicine, Mayra Ramirez arrived at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital with COVID-19 symptoms on April 26. Within 10 minutes of arriving at the hospital, Ramirez was placed on a ventilator."From there, everything was a blur," Ramirez said.COVID-19 had "overrun" the paralegal's lungs, according to Dr. Beth Malsin at Northwestern Memorial."For many days, she was the sickest person in our COVID ICU and possibly the entire hospital," she said.Ramirez spent weeks in the COVID-19 ICU at the hospital, a time that she says she doesn't really remember."All I remember was being put to sleep as I was being intubated and then six weeks of complete nightmares," she told CNN. "Some of the nightmares consisted a lot of drowning, and I attribute that to not being able to breathe."By early June, doctors had decided that the virus had done irreversible damage to Ramirez's lungs, and only a transplant would save her life. After an urgent evaluation, she was placed on the transplant list.On June 5, Ramirez went through the life-saving procedure, just 48 hours after being listed on the transplant list.According to The New York Times, doctors are often extremely hesitant to perform lung transplants — patients must be sick enough to require new organs, but also healthy enough to be able to survive the procedure and rehab. As an otherwise healthy 28-year-old woman, Ramirez fit the qualifications.Ramirez was discharged from the hospital on July 8 — 71 days after she arrived at the hospital. She was the first COVID-19 patient in the United States to receive a double lung transplant.“People need to understand that COVID-19 is real. What happened to me can happen to you. So please, wear a mask and wash your hands. If not for you, then do it for others,” Ramirez said.Exactly one month after completing the first procedure, doctors at Northwestern Memorial performed a second double lung transplant on a COVID-19 patient. 62-year-old Brian Kuhns originally arrived at the hospital on March 18 after suffering from a severe cough.Prior to arriving at the hospital, Kuhns thought COVID-19 was "a hoax," according to his wife, Nancy."I assure you; Brian’s tune has now changed. COVID-19 is not a hoax. It almost killed my husband,” Nancy Kuhns said.Kuhns underwent surgery on July 5. According to the hospital, a typical double-lung transplant takes six or seven hours. Kuhns' surgery took 10 hours because COVID-19 resulted in lung necrosis and severe inflammation in the chest cavities.Kuhns was taken off a ventilator a day after the surgery, and the hospital says he continues to recover at an "optimal" pace."If my story can teach you one thing, it’s that COVID-19 isn’t a joke. NEW YORK (AP) — Walmart said in a press release that the ammunition and firearms removed from displays at U.S. stores on Thursday was returned to the sales floor on Friday.“After civil unrest earlier this week resulted in damage to several of our stores, consistent with actions we took over the summer, we asked stores to move firearms and ammunition from the sales floor to a secure location in the back of the store in an abundance of caution," the company stated in a news release. "As the current incidents have remained geographically isolated, we have made the decision to begin returning these products to the sales floor today.”Walmart said on Thursday that it had removed ammunition and firearms from displays at U.S. stores, citing "civil unrest" in some areas. The nation's largest retailer, based in Bentonville, Arkansas, sells firearms in about half of its 4,700 stores. The discounter said the items remained available for purchase by customers. Walmart made a similar move in the wake of the police killing of George Floyd that set off sometimes violent demonstrations against police brutality and injustice against Blacks. Last year, Walmart stopped selling handgun and short-barrel rifle ammunition while requesting that customers not openly carry firearms in its stores, even where state laws allow it.
