BEIJING, Oct. 4 (Xinhua) -- A 66-member Chinese rescue and relief team sent to provide immediate assistance to flood ravaged Pakistan returned from the Pakistani port city Karachi to Beijing by charter flight Monday, officials said.China sent two rescue and relief missions to flood-afflicted Pakistan since the end of July when floods began taking their toll, said officials from China Southern Airlines Company Limited, which transported the team. The return of these 66 members, including medical workers, experts from the China Earthquake Administration, rescue soldiers as well as journalists, marked the end of the two rescue missions, noted officials. In response to the worst flooding in Pakistan's recent history, China's help included monetary assistance, urgently needed relief goods delivered directly to affected areas, a convoy of 101 trucks to the northern parts of Pakistan, two rescue and relief missions for providing medical relief to the victims, four military helicopters for carrying out rescue missions and an additional 200 million U.S. dollars for post-disaster reconstruction besides the previous 320 million yuan (47 million U.S. dollars) worth of humanitarian supplies.

YICHANG, Hubei, Oct. 3 (Xinhua) -- The water level at the Three Gorges Dam, the world's largest water control project, reached 164.59 meters on Sunday, only 10 meters short of its full capacity of 175-meters, said a project official. The dam in central China started to hold back water this September by discharging less to the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the country's longest river.Reaching the 175-meter water level would enable the Three Gorges Dam to fulfill its functions of flood control and generating electricity to the fullest extent, symbolizing the total success of the massive water project. This is the reservoir's third attempt to reach full capacity since 2008. However, water levels stopped at 172.8 meters in 2008 and 171.43 meters in 2009 due to droughts on the lower reaches. However, this time officials believe the dam will reach full capacity by the end of October."We have confidence in reaching the goal this year. Although less water flowed into the dam after the flood season, we have reduced water discharges accordingly," said Yuan Jie, an official in charge of water level control.

ALMATY, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Senior Chinese commander Chen Bingde said Thursday that China and Kazakhstan will further enhance their military cooperation to ensure regional security.During a meeting with Saken Zhasuzakov, first deputy defense minister and chief of the staff of Kazakhstan's armed forces, Chen thanked the Kazaks for their efforts to prepare the upcoming "Peace Mission 2010" anti-terror drill.Chen, chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA), also thanked them for their support of the participating Chinese troops. The Sept. 9-25 anti-terror drill, the seventh of its kind under the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, is an important move to implement the consensus reached by the heads of state of SCO countries, said Chen.Chen Bingde (R), chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, meets with Saken Zhasuzakov, first deputy defense minister and chief of the staff of Kazakhstan's Armed Forces, in Almaty, Kazakhstan, Sept. 9, 2010. Chen visited Almaty on Thursday to attend the opening ceremony of the "Peace Mission - 2010" anti-terrorism military exercise, which is launched under the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in south Kazakhstan from Sept. 9 to 25.The exercise will significantly contribute to eliminating the Three Evil Forces of extremism, separatism and terrorism, promoting regional security and deepening SCO-wide cooperation, Chen said.Noting that profound changes are taking place in Central Asia, Chen said the security situation in the region concerns the core interests of both China and Kazakhstan because the former is a neighbor of the region, while the latter is a large player inside it.The Three Evil Forces are a big public hazard to the international community, especially to Central Asia, the senior Chinese commander said, adding that Beijing and Almaty, both as SCO members, play a key role in maintaining regional security.Through in-depth cooperation, the two sides have made great contributions to the common fight against the Three Evil Forces and the maintenance of regional peace, Chen said.He said that military cooperation between the two countries has been growing continuously since they established diplomatic ties 18 years ago. Remarkable achievements have been made, he said, in high-level contacts, strategic consultations, technological exchanges, border defense exchanges and personnel training. The two countries will strengthen the friendly cooperation between their militaries, strive to maintain the sound momentum of high-level military exchanges and promote exchanges and cooperation in professional fields, Chen said.Zhasuzakov, for his part, said that Kazakhstan, as the current SCO chair, will make active efforts to advance the further development of the bloc.He spoke highly of military relations between China and Kazakhstan, saying defense cooperation between the two sides has been fruitful. He also expressed gratitude to China for its support of Kazakhstan's military build-up and personnel training. The Three Evil Forces constitute a grave threat to regional security and stability, Zhasuzakov agreed, adding that his country attaches great importance to bilateral and multilateral anti-terror cooperation.Kazakhstan is ready to join China and other SCO members in making positive contributions to the battle against the Three Evil Forces, he added.Chen arrived here Thursday morning to attend the opening ceremony of the "Peace Mission 2010" exercise, which is to be staged in south Kazakhstan with the involvement of 5,000 troops from China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan.

BEIJING, Sept. 20 (Xinhuanet) -- Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group on Sunday turned down the suggestion by Yahoo chief executive officer Carol Bartz that she be allowed to join the board of Alibaba, replying that Bartz should focus on improving Yahoo's own business first.Wang Shuai, chief marketing officer of Taobao.com under the group, said he has been "perplexed" by Bartz's decisions and attitudes since she became CEO of Yahoo in January 2009, claiming: "They demonstrate a lack of appreciation of the Internet, the mainland market and business partners."In response to Bartz's suggestion that she join the board of Alibaba, Wang said: "Perhaps it would not be a bad idea for her to concentrate her efforts on improving Yahoo's current situation."On Friday, Bartz touted Yahoo's 39 percent investment in Alibaba, a day after the Chinese Internet company said Yahoo had rejected its offer to sell the stake back to the group. The 62-year-old executive said the ideal time for Yahoo to exit from Alibaba will be after Taobao.com and Alipay.com, Alibaba's online shopping and payment subsidiaries, go public. She added that she will "probably" join the company's board later this year, when Yahoo gets a second seat on the board under its 2005 agreement with the company.Wang said on Sunday that Alibaba had no plans for Taobao.com to go public.Alibaba sold a 39 percent stake in the company to Yahoo in 2005 for billion and ownership of Yahoo China. The relationship between the two companies has been deteriorating recently, especially after Bartz replaced Yahoo's co-founder, Jerry Yang, to become chief executive of the company.

BEIJING, Sept. 9 (Xinhua) -- Central banks should provide incentive mechanisms for banks to extend more loans to support the real economy, Zhou Xiaochuan, governor of the People's Bank of China (PBOC), or the central bank, said Thursday.Speaking at a forum in Beijing sponsored by Oxford University and the China Development Research Foundation, Zhou reviewed the worldwide central banks' role in helping grapple with the financial crisis, pointing out that zero interest rate policies adopted in many countries could discourage banks from extending lending. He said, however, that a central bank should maintain a certain interest rate margin, which will help banks to recover from damages brought by the global credit crunch and strengthen their abilities to extend loans.
