SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Military families say the squalid living conditions detailed in a new report by the Military Family Advisory Network released Wednesday don't fully portray their struggle.In Murphy Canyon, the issues range from mice, to dry rot to rust. Shelby Stevens' husband is in the Navy, and they've been stationed in San Diego for three years. On the porch she pointed out what looked like half painted pergolas and said they were full of dry rot. Inside there is no microwave, and the kitchen was much the same as it was originally in the 1990's. "We've got ant problems, roaches, mice," Stevens showed 10News her shed in the back yard. Inside there's half a dozen mice traps, with little black dots covering the floor. Stevens says those are mice droppings.On her phone, an image of a dead mouse, she said her dog killed. These issues echoed throughout the military community.A woman who didn't wish to be identified, for fear of retaliation, said her closet door had loose rusted screws she had to keep out of her toddlers' reach. She said the repair work on a clogged toilet was shoddy, saying the men left mold, and poop around the base of the toilet.The new report by the Military Family Advisory Network breaks down the problems renters face by base. For San Diego military families, the top two issues are maintenance and mold."We absolutely know that the nearly 17,000 who responded to our questionnaire, this is their reality," Shannon Razsadin, Executive Director of MFAN, said.The survey went out last January and ran for a week. Razsadin hopes the report gives military families a tool to create change.The military moms who spoke with 10News say it's not a complete picture of what they're dealing with. Stevens said 17,000 people across the country is a very small part of the military community as a whole. She said in the last several months their service has declined."We've had no shows from maintenance men, we've had no shows from contractors who are scheduled to come out to my house, no show, no call. Southwest Airlines opened its flight schedule Wednesday for once-daily service out of San Diego. The flights travel to Kahului, Maui, starting Apr. 14, 2020. Flights to Honolulu begin Apr. 20, 2020, Southwest reports. Fares as low as 9 each way will be available on both routes for travel between Apr. 14 and June 4, 2020, according to the airline. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - It’s the most wonderful time of the year and volunteers are spreading a little holiday cheer for those who are less fortunate. Just Call Us Volunteers are preparing a special Christmas dinner for hundreds of homeless. 30 gallons of stock, 75 pounds of green beans and more than 270 pounds of turkey are just some of the items being served on the dinner menu. Just Call Us Volunteers is strictly made up of volunteers who want to give back. The group will serve at least three homeless shelters around the county on Christmas Day. They offer food to at least “350 at the tent downtown, the Alpha Project tent. We probably got 65 at Rachel’s Women's Shelter and 65 at the San Diego Center for Children,” says Julie Darling, organizer of Just Call Us Volunteers. The food is donated from Specialty Produce, Cupcakes Squared and Sprouts Farmers Markets. The organization says their volunteer list is full for Christmas Day but they give back all year long. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Los Angeles County health officials are scrambling to prevent the spread of hepatitis A after three people became infected with the potentially deadly virus while in San Diego two months ago.In a motion filed by Los Angeles County's Fifth District Supervisor Kathryn Barger, she is asking the Dept. of Public Health to provide a report within 14 days on current efforts to stop an outbreak and a plan for response should one occur."At this time Public Health does not consider there to be a hepatitis A outbreak in Los Angeles County, however it is important that the County proactively educate the community on ways to prevent hepatitis A infection, and have a response plan in the event that the County does see an increase in hepatitis A cases," Barger said in her prevention plan.Citing public health officials, Barger says that the three people who acquired the infection had been in San Diego in mid-July.READ: Most hand sanitizers will not kill Hepatitis A?San Diego County health officials are in the midst of an hepatitis A epidemic with the first cases reported early this year. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Locals gathered in Mission Bay Saturday to protest a hotel's expansion plans which they say will complicate public parking and access.The Bahia Resort Hotel has planned a number of changes to the area surrounding the hotel, aimed at adding lawn and picnic areas. The plans for the expansion were approved by the City Council in 1994. Hotel owner Bill Evans said there have been more than 110 meetings on the subject.Hundreds of protestors paddled out Saturday with signs calling to "save Bahia Point," in opposition to the plans, which will remove a strip of public parking from the nearby beach — used by many to paddleboard or kayak in the bay.RELATED:  732
