The Navy’s newest, most high-tech nuclear submarines use at least one piece of technology that millions of children use every day — a video game controller.According to The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, Virginia, the Navy is replacing traditional periscopes on its Virginia-class nuclear submarines with high resolution cameras that will be controlled with Xbox 360 controllers.According to the Virginian-Pilot, the cameras were originally designed to be controlled with a “helicopter-style” joystick. That design was quickly dropped after officials got feedback from a group of Navy junior officers.Lt. j.g. Kyle Leonard, the assistant weapons officer on the USS John Warner — one of the Virginia-class submarines based in Norfolk — told the Virginian-Pilot that many sailors found the joystick clunky to hold and hard to use.The solution? Integrate a tool that nearly every American kid uses on a daily basis.According to WRC-TV, the controllers are more than just functional. The opioid crisis has stolen the lives of thousands of those susceptible to addiction. But medical experts say that the crisis can be stemmed if parents take a stand when it comes to painkiller prescriptions.Hayden Kozlow can still remember the moments before this, the surgery to get her wisdom teeth removed."I hate needles," Hayden Kozlow said. "I hate like getting surgeries and things like that so I was super nervous and really scared."But her mom, DeEtte Kozlow, says for her, the most nerve-wracking part of it all happened with Hayden's nurse, before procedure began."As she was walking us through everything she said you know before it's all said and done I'll get Hayden's script for a painkiller," DeEtte Kozlow remembers. "And I said, 'Oh that won't be necessary. We don't need a painkiller.' And she said, 'Oh, you have to have a painkiller.'"Deette Kozlow says she felt obligated to take the opioid prescription, despite her reservations."Well, the opioid epidemic has touched us personally," Kozlow said. "And in December of 2016 we lost a very dear friend."But her biggest concern? Her daughter's age."I kind of panicked for a minute because she is 17," DeEtte Kozlow says.Research shows that for those who start using drugs or alcohol before the age of 18, there is a one-in-four chance of future addictions. For those who start using after the age of 21, that number falls to one-in-25."When you think about the developing teen brain, that brain is much more susceptible to addiction than an adult, fully-developed brain," said Ken MacLellan with Speak Now, a group that urges parents to talk with their children about drugs and alcohol. "So that's why we see that 90 percent of addictions start in teenage years because of all that brain development processes happening during adolescence."Speak Now is also working to urge parents to talk with their children's doctors, dentist and other health care providers about alternatives to prescribing highly addictive opioids and other pain relievers for their children."You don't have to fill that prescription, and you don't have to provide the drugs to your youth if you can figure out a different pain treatment plan," MacLellan said. "If so, there are alternatives."DeEtte Kozlow decided to treat Hayden with Tylenol, and she made a full recovery. Now, DeEtte has this advice for parents."Educate themselves," Kozlow said. "To talk to their doctors ahead of time ask for alternative medications other things that can be used other naturopathic things."  2560

The Keystone State is living up to its name, as potentially the linchpin in who becomes America’s next president.“Their processes just were never anticipating such an influx,” said Matthew Weil, with the Bipartisan Policy Center.It’s an influx of early absentee and mail-in ballots, in numbers Pennsylvania has never dealt with before. The state received about 2.5 million mail-in ballots, 10 times the number they had in 2016. Yet, counting all of the state’s ballots will take a while.Watch Gov. Tom Wolf provide an update about the state's election results:“In some of the biggest jurisdictions--Philadelphia, Pittsburgh--they just didn't have the experience counting those quickly,” Weil said. “And the fact that the legislature did not give them time before Election Day to count those, even knowing that this was coming, means that most likely we're not going to have great results until Friday.”Among the areas to watch in Pennsylvania: the suburban counties around the state’s two biggest cities, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. That includes Bucks County, which lies just north of Philadelphia.“Counting the ballots is really an uncertain science for us,” said Bob Harvie, Bucks County Board of Elections Chairman.Those mail-in ballots also take longer to count.“There are two envelopes we have to open: the outside envelope and the secrecy envelope,” Harvie said. “So, it's really double the work.”Here in Bucks County alone, they sent out 200,000 mail-in ballots for this election. That’s 10 times the number they did in 2016. And in Bucks County, like everywhere else across Pennsylvania, ballots postmarked on Election Day can still be counted if they’re received through Friday. However, elections officials are preparing for the possibility of a legal challenge involving those ballots.“We do know that there's very likely to be a legal challenge to that claiming that that's not constitutional,” Harvie said. “So, we are going to start segregating any mail we get.”In the end, though, officials in Pennsylvania hope the 2020 election keeps voters confident in the election system.“The people you see here working, you know these are not political appointees,” Harvie said. “They’re county employees, they’re government employees, and so, really, they're they've committed themselves to giving people a fair, accurate, safe election.”It’s an election that doesn’t appear to be over just yet. 2411

The percentage of Americans who say they would probably or definitely get a COVID-19 vaccine when one becomes available has sharply decreased in just the last few months.A survey done in mid-September by the Pew Research Center found only 51 percent of respondents would definitely or probably get the vaccine when one became available. A similar survey done in May found 72 percent of participants would definitely or probably get the vaccine. The 21 point drop was all in the “definitely would get the vaccine” category, according to the data.According to the data, a large drop in the number of American who would get the vaccine was seen in both Republican leaning respondents and Democratic leaning.Republican participants went from 65 percent would get the vaccine in May to 44 percent in September. Participants who identified as Democratic went from 79 percent would get the vaccine in May to 58 percent in September.Large drops were seen across gender, race and ethnicity as well.“About three-quarters of Americans (77%) say it is at least somewhat likely that a vaccine for COVID-19 will be approved and used in the U.S. before it’s fully known whether it is safe and effective, including 36% who say this is very likely to happen,” Pew Research Center wrote of their findings.Of the 49 percent who would not get a vaccine, the majority of them are worried about potential side effects.Side effects are also a concern for those who would get the vaccine. Of the 51 percent who said they would probably or definitely get the vaccine, more than half said that if many people were experiencing minor side effects they would reconsider getting the vaccine.The data came from more than 10,000 Americans surveyed between September 8-13. 1748

The pandemic has added extra stress to our lives, but that's not stopping some of us from getting more sleep.New research from the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Washington looked at how stay-at-home orders and social distancing guidelines have impacted college students' sleeping habits.They found that on average, students have been sleeping 30 minutes more per weekday and 24 minutes more per weekend day. They've also been keeping more consistent sleep schedules.This is similar to what a study of people ages 18 to 65 in Europe found during this same time.So, the big question now is whether these habits will continue now that stay at home orders are lifted.“One of the things we recognize is that when people who weren't getting enough sleep start to actually get better sleep because they can and they realize ‘wow that makes a difference in my life,’ a number of people choose behaviorally to go ahead and continue to get that better sleep,” said Ken Wright, integrative physiology professor at CU Boulder.As for the question about whether the quality of our sleep has improved, the study in Europe did look at that. It found on average, people have been seeing slight reductions in the quality of their sleep, but there are things you can do to help with this.“When they looked at the group as a whole, they found that those people who got exercise and got more sunlight during the COVID stay-at-home, they found that they actually had less reductions in their sleep quality,” said Wright.One negative result of the stay-at-home orders on our sleep in both studies – people have been going to bed later, both during the week and on weekends.
