Researchers looked at more than 3,000 counties around the country and their humidity levels between March and September 2020.The team says they found increasing humidity levels had a negative impact on new cases of COVID-19 in most regions. In two of the regions that showed the highest effect, a 1 g/m3 increase in absolute humidity resulted in a 0.21 and 0.15 decrease in COVID-19 cases.However, there are also studies that show the humidity level had little to no effect on the spread of COVID-19.A study released in early November found the weather had “virtually no impact” on the spread. Instead, they said human behavior changes during weather fluctuations, outside during warmer weather and heading indoor during cold weather, had a large impact.What health and science experts seem to agree on is that the air does get drier in the winter from both the cold air outside and heated air inside. And that without proper ventilation, any coronavirus droplets in a space could linger longer and become more concentrated.This dry air can also cause nasal passages to dry out, which means noses could have less protective mucus. General Motors recently announced that it would be shutting down five car factories in the United States and Canada and cutting 14,000 jobs. GM said at the time that factory workers would be offered jobs at other facilities where production is being increased and on Friday it offered an update on how things are going.Of the jobs GM plans to cut, 2,800 are hourly employees in the United States. These are generally assembly line workers who punch in and out for work each day as opposed to employees who are paid a salary.The automaker announced Friday that 1,100 of those hourly workers have volunteered to transfer to jobs at other factories, such as GM's Flint, Michigan, truck plant where heavy duty pickups are built and the Toledo transmission plant in Toledo, Ohio. Another 1,200 workers in that group are eligible for retirement, the company said.The US plants GM is shutting down are in Michigan, Ohio, and Maryland. These plants mostly made sedans, which have fallen out of favor as customers have shifted toward crossover SUVs and trucks.GM also said last month that Canadian workers would be offered jobs at other plants in that country.In total, the company announced it would cut 6,000 hourly and 8,000 salaried positions. HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii's governor says that starting Oct. 15, travelers arriving from out of state may bypass a 14-day quarantine requirement if they test negative for COVID-19.Travelers will have to take the test within 72 hours before their flight arrives in the islands.The governor, David Ige, says drug store operator CVS and healthcare provider Kaiser Permanente will conduct the tests as part of an agreement with the state.Travelers will need to be able to show proof of their negative test results from a CLIA certified laboratory. Those who can’t will be required to quarantine for two weeks or until they can provide proof of their test results.Ige said in a press release that the new pre-travel testing program “is an important step toward reviving our economy while continuing to protect public health.”Earlier this year, Hawaii had plans to start a pre-travel testing program on Aug. 1 but had to postpone them as COVID-19 cases spiked on the U.S. mainland and in Hawaii.
