SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- More than 100 cars pulled out of a downtown San Diego parking lot Wednesday morning hoping to make their voices heard against Proposition 22.Among the caravan -- made up of some local elected officials and workers from various industries -- were many rideshare drivers like Tonje Ettesvoll.Ettesvoll has been an Uber driver for four years, and she said if Prop. 22 passes next month, she will lose income and benefits that are currently protected under state law. If passed, she will be left to rely on what the rideshare companies said they will provide.“A lot of times we spend driving a passenger maybe to a remote area and we have to get back to where we live or where there’s people, and we don’t get paid for that time. And none of the benefit goes towards that time either,” Ettesvoll said.Prop. 22, which is heavily funded by companies like Uber and Lyft, would consider app-based drivers as independent contractors.Al Porce is a driver who supports the measure. If it passes, he said he’ll be able to control who he works for, for how long, and where.“Times are great right now. I’ve been driving all year. I switched over from transporting people to food and groceries. And then I started transporting people again,” said Porce.Opponents of Prop. 22 believe the measure will play a role in deepening racial inequality, citing that 78 percent of this workforce is made up of people of color.Supporters of the measure don’t agree, arguing this measure will keep all who want to work employed with steady income.The caravan is scheduled to stop Los Angeles, Bakersfield, and Fresno before ending in San Francisco. 1648

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Naval Base Point Loma was locked down Thursday over reports of a suspicious person.In a Facebook post, the base said "all personnel onboard the installation are directed to seek shelter in the nearest building and activate lock down procedure" and remain inside until told otherwise. The lockdown was lifted just before 2 p.m. and Harbor Drive was reopened to traffic. The base told 10News that it appeared the caller believed to have seen a suspicious person, but the person in question was not believed to be a threat.The base added the Gateway Youth Center and Patrick Wade CDC had been taken off lockdown and parents allowed to pick up their children.10News is monitoring this breaking news. 722

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Northbound lanes of Interstate 5 through National City were shut down early Saturday following a deadly crash.The two-vehicle collision occurred just after the State Route 54 connector, according to California Highway Patrol. All traffic was being diverted off I-5 at the Mile of Cars. Traffic was also being diverted off WB SR-54 onto Highland Ave.Traffic gridlocked in the area, backing up onto the E St. on ramp in Chula Vista and westbound Sr-54 connector, according to CHP. Some motorists were seen turning around on the on ramp and driving the wrong direction.MAP: LIVE TRAFFIC CONDITIONSCHP reported that all NB I-5 lanes were reopened just before 11 a.m.The cause of the crash is being investigated. But CHP said it appeared a Toyota Tacoma was speeding in the emergency lane to get around traffic and caused a chain-reaction crash involving at least four vehicles.That suspected driver of that truck reportedly took off after causing the crash, CHP said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Officials with the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation say Donovan State Prison officials confiscated a cell phone Tuesday from an inmate who was allegedly using the phone to harass and threaten a woman in New York.According to Christina Neal, 37-year-old Brandon Baker, a prisoner serving 75 years to life at Donovan in South San Diego County, contacted her nearly two weeks ago.“I started getting messages from someone named Brandon Baker, but I had never heard of him before,” Neal said. Neal says Baker found her on Facebook through mutual friends and family members and then began sending her inappropriate messages through Facebook messenger.“He put ‘ma, what’s up, you looking really good. I’d like to get to know you,’” Neal said. “and he was like, ‘you're really sexy.’ And I didn't respond. So then a couple of days later, I got another message from him, and he's talking about my daughter.” “So I was just like ‘I don't know who you are. I don't know how you got pictures of me and my daughter, but please leave me alone, I'm married, and I don't want to have anything to do with you,’” Neal added.Neal says the tone of the messages escalated and Baker told her he would be getting out next month.“He said he was gonna come to my house and said he was gonna rape me,” she said. “I’m very nervous, just because hearing what (he) did, (he) doesn’t seem like (he’s) that nice of a person.”CDCR says they are investigating the case, and Baker could face more punishment depending on what they find on the phone they seized.They released the following statement:“Contraband cellphones are often used to in criminal and illicit activities, conduct drug trafficking, enable gang communication, and harass and intimidate victims and witnesses. Their presence affects safety and security in state prisons and California’s communities. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police are searching for a suspect they say choked a clerk before robbing a Mira Mesa 7-Eleven.The robbery happened around 2:10 a.m. Tuesday on the 11000 block of Camino Ruiz near Sandburg Elementary School.Police say the suspect walked into the store and asked the clerk for cigarettes. When the clerk went to get the cigarettes, the suspect choked the clerk unconscious from behind.When the man regained consciousness, he discovered that the suspect stole money and cigarettes from the convenience store.The clerk was uninjured during the robbery.  588
