BEIJING, July 3 (Xinhua) -- A total of 150 disabled people were honored in Beijing Friday as national models for self-reliance.     They were the fourth batch of such honorees since China began in 1991 to honor disabled citizens for their unyielding spirits in the face of adversity.     "I'm very happy and proud of myself," said 32-year-old Ma Yunli, one of the medal receivers.     A native in Yanan in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, the mentally-challenged girl was winner of several medals of Paralympic Games.     "Through years' efforts, I can basically take care of myself and can even do some simple things for my family members," she said.  Chinese President Hu Jintao (R, front) shakes hands with representatives before a national meeting in Beijing, capital of China, July 3, 2009. The meeting is to award some handicapped people for their self-reliance and a number of people and units for their assistance to the handicapped population. Leaders of the Communist Party of China and the Chinese government, including Hu Jintao, Wen Jiabao, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping and Li Keqiang, met with representatives before the meeting.    "I achieved my success with the help of many kindhearted people," she said. "There are still many mentally-challenged people like me who need to be taken care of and aspire for help. I also want them to achieve success."     According to the China Disabled Persons' Federation (CDPF), the honored disabled this year aged from 19 to 72. Some of them are workers, farmers, students, and others come from various sectors including education, medical service, law, culture and science.     Among them, 97 suffer from limb disabilities, 32 are sight-disabled, 18 have hearing problems, two are mentally-impaired, one suffers from more than one kind of disability.     Also at Friday's conference, 200 institutions and 150 individuals were honored for the great help they had given to the disabled.     China has more than 83 million people with various kinds of disabilities, accounting for 6.34 percent of the total population.     Chinese leaders including Hu Jintao, Wen Jiabao, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, and Li Keqiang met the delegates of the conference before it started.     Vice Premier Hui Liangyu said while addressing the meeting that the government should "speed up the establishment of social security and service systems for the disabled to create equal and better environment for them to participate in social affairs and for their all-round development."     Activities to help this group of people should be "more professional" and "standardized," said Hui, also director of the disabled working committee of the State Council, or Cabinet.     The CDPF's Chairwoman Zhang Haidi, a wheelchair-bound writer, presided over the conference.

BEIJING, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Chinese top political advisor Jia Qinglin met with Taiwan-based Kuomintang (KMT) Chairman Wu Poh-hsiung and his delegation at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing Monday afternoon.     Jia, chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, said the cross-Straits relationship had made breakthroughs after a historic turning point in the past year.     Improved relations had yielded practical benefits for people on both sides, and cross-Straits peace and stability had been highly praised by the international community, said Jia. SALZBURG, Austria, May 17 (Xinhua) -- Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo said here Sunday that exchanges between local regions of China and Austria constitute an important part of bilateral relations.     Wu made the remarks when meeting with Simon Illmer, president of the parliament of the Salzburg Province of Austria.     Wu, who is the first chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC) to visit Austria since 1994, arrived in Salzburg from Vienna on Sunday morning, continuing his official goodwill visit to the country.     Wu said Salzburg has attracted more and more Chinese tourists with its many cultural relics and beautiful natural scenes. BEIJING, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-nine large and medium-sized Chinese steel producers reported 5.18 billion yuan (762.46 million U.S. dollars) in aggregate losses in the first four months, the China Iron and Steel Association (CISA) said here Friday.     The 29 producers were among 72 surveyed by CISA, the association's vice chairman, Luo Bingsheng, said.     The 72 companies reported 575.59 billion yuan in revenue, down 18.9 percent year on year, Luo said. They paid 15.42 billion yuan in taxes, down 85.07 percent year on year, Luo said.     Losses were mainly caused by slumping domestic steel prices, Luo said.     Many producers have cut costs, and the production cost of steel dropped 13.75 percent in the first quarter, Luo said.

URUMQI, July 10 (Xinhua) -- China's top leadership has vowed to punish those responsible for Sunday's riot in the northwestern Xinjiang region in accordance with the law and to educate those taking part in it after being deceived by separatists. Zhou Yongkang, a member of the Standing Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Political Bureau, said in his tour of the autonomous region on Friday that all available efforts should be mobilized to "win the tough war of maintaining Xinjiang's stability."     The Party's top official in charge of law enforcement stressed that efforts should be made to "resolutely implement" the spirit of the Political Bureau meeting on Wednesday night, and use "tough measures" to ensure stability.     President Hu Jintao on Wednesday night convened a meeting of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau to discuss the deadly Xinjiang riot. He returned to Beijing Wednesday afternoon.     The meeting said the government would "firmly crack down on serious crimes, including assaults, vandalism, looting and arson."     The Standing Committee ordered authorities to "isolate and crack down on the tiny few" and "unify and educate the majority of masses."     "Instigators, organizers, culprits and violent criminals in the unrest shall be severely punished in accordance with the law," it said. "Those taking part in the riot due to provocation and deceit by separatists, should be given education."     Hu's stance in handling the riot was echoed by Zhou, one of the nine Political Bureau Standing Committee members, who arrived in the region Thursday afternoon.     Zhou said Thursday that the government and the Party would crack down hard on violence, severely punish the outlaws in accordance with the law, so as to protect the lives and property of people of all ethnic groups, safeguard ethnic unity and restore normal social order in the region as soon as possible.     The country's top police officer Meng Jianzhu was the first senior official from the central government to arrive in the Xinjiang region.     When visiting residents injured by the rioters and family members of those victims in Urumqi on Wednesday, the state councilor and public security minister urged "no leniency in the punishment of thugs who took part in the Urumqi riot".     Meng said leading rioters should be punished "with the utmost severity" and those taking part in the riot, who were provoked and cheated by separatists, should be given persuasion and education.     "All the thugs in the riot should be severely punished in accordance with law, otherwise we will let the victims and their relatives down," Meng repeated his comment on Thursday while visiting residents in Urumqi and a funeral parlor to mourn the Armed Police and other victims of the riot.     Senior Chinese leader He Guoqiang also stressed social harmony and stability on Wednesday.     He, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, made the remarks during a two-day visit to Gansu Province, which neighbors Xinjiang.     "The recent violence in Urumqi... has again alerted us to the importance of social stability. It is our top priority," he said.     He urged Party and government departments at all levels to crack down on the acts of sabotage by hostile forces both at home and abroad, in order to ensure national and ethnic unity and social stability.     The Party's top publicity official Li Changchun on Wednesday called for redoubled efforts to improve education on patriotism and ethnic unity, to create a favorable atmosphere for the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.     Li, also one of the nine Political Bureau Standing Committee members, made the remarks during a three-day visit to the northwestern province of Qinghai, adjacent to Xinjiang.     "In regions inhabited by ethnic minorities, patriotic education must be combined with education on ethnic unity," he said, to let the public understand that "ethnic unity comes with blessings while disunity with woes".
