(KGTV) - An innovative young baker from Mount Helix is raising money for Parkinson's disease research in honor of her beloved grandfather, who is battling the disease.As many have done during these unusual times, Zoe Bernard took on a popular pandemic hobby."I learned how to make banana bread," says the 9 year-old.As Zoe perfected the recipe, she felt like something was missing, so she started experimenting with different ingredients, getting more bold as her creations continued to receive rave reviews from friends and neighbors. She took custom orders, adding nuts, candy bar pieces and including a couple of secret ingredients. The warm reception led her to begin selling her creations, but not to pad her own pockets. She and her mother Tina Contogenis discussed what would be most beneficial. Zoe decided to donate her profits to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Disease research.Her "Papa" Joe Contogenis was diagnosed with the disease three years ago. The tough Marine is facing a difficult battle, with a tremor in his arm, and an increasing number of hard days.Zoe and Joe have a special relationship. Joe lives five houses down from Zoe. He describes her as "an incredible young person with the biggest heart."Their neighbors have caught on to Zoe's effort, adding items to sell at a bake sale last Saturday, or overpaying and refusing to take their change.Tina says they've been overwhelmed by the response. (KGTV) - The mother of a crash victim is pleading for the driver of the car to come forward.Monica Cloyd said her son, Michael Gutierrez, was severely injured Saturday morning on Wildcat Canyon Road near the Barona Casino when the driver of the car he was in crashed into a pole.She says the car belonged to her son, a 23-year-old ironworker, but said he had been drinking so he gave his keys to his friend.RELATED: Prosecutors: Ramona driver tried to hide evidence of hit-and-run crashEarlier in the night, she said they had been at a party in La Jolla but her son’s friend ended up driving them to Barona instead of going home.They made it to the casino, but on the way back, the car crashed along Wildcat Canyon Road.Cloyd said a 16-year-old girl was also in the car and was seriously injured.RELATED: Hit-and-run victim placed on life support days before his wedding dayThe man who was driving ran from the scene, according to Cloyd. Ready-to-eat pre-made tamales give customers a piece of home cooking.“It comes from like grandma the night before getting everything ready for Christmas Eve,” Zaira Contreras, who works in marketing for the supermarket, said.It’s a holiday tradition for many Hispanic families. But this year, their tortilleria is extra busy. Workers say sales of masa have skyrocketed.“I was just talking to one of the guys and he was saying that production has not stopped in these couple weeks,” she said.They’re noticing more families deciding to make their own tamales meaning more people are staying at home, likely with just their immediate families.“More people have time at home, they want to try and make them. Life expectancy in America is down for the third year in a row. One of the reasons is because more people are dying by suicide.At just 27 years old, Ashlynne Haycock has faced a series of unimaginable tragedies.Her dad died while on active duty with the Army. Years later, her mother, who was also a veteran, died by suicide.“It’s not about wanting to die,” Haycock says. “It’s about not wanting to be in pain any longer, and my mom was in a lot of pain from her own military service, from losing my dad, from being alone. She struggled.”The suicide rates in the US are now at their highest levels in 50 years, according to the Centers for Disease and Control and Prevention (CDC). The numbers have jumped so much, suicides are partly to blame for a drop in US life expectancy.Most Americans now live an average of 78 years and six months, a slight drop from last year and lower the third year in a row.“I think, we as country, really need to focus on making suicide prevention a public health issue,” Haycock says. “Making sure that it’s something people know if they get treatment, treatment works.” Sadly, Haycock learned that first-hand.“I attempted suicide myself after my mom died, and my friends got me treatment,” Haycock says. “And I’m so grateful every day that I didn’t succeed.”Now, Haycock works for the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, an organization that supports military families who have lost loved ones, including those in so much pain they took their own lives. 1514
