SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Military officials are preparing to transfer the remains of seven U.S. Marines -- including one from Montebello -- and a Navy sailor to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware over the next few days to be prepared for burial.The remains were recovered Friday after the Marines went missing near San Clemente Island when their amphibious vehicle sank during a training mission last month."Our hearts and thoughts of the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit are with the families of our recovered Marines and Sailor," said Col. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man stabbed his housemate to death in Chula Vista two years ago, then stuffed the victim's body into a barrel that he and another man dumped into San Diego Bay, a prosecutor alleged Tuesday, while defense attorneys maintained that the evidence against their clients was entirely circumstantial. Timothy John Cook, 54, is charged with the Sept. 30, 2017, murder of Omar Medina, 28, and co-defendant Derrick Spurgeon, 40, is charged with being an accessory for allegedly driving the boat used to dump the victim's body, which was located 12 days later inside the barrel, which had been weighed down by a makeshift anchor made of wire and cinderblocks. Medical examiners said Medina had been stabbed more than 60 times in the chest, back, neck and head. The attorney said the prosecution lacked a murder weapon and witnesses to the murder, which allegedly occurred during the daytime hours of Sept. 30 at the Chula Vista home. Oien said Cook's agitation over Medina's sloppiness was far from indicative of a motive to kill and that Cook would have tried to get closer to Medina if he really wanted his settlement money, rather than kicking him out of their house. Oien said Cook was merely fixing up the home, and that he had an agreement with his landlord to make occasional repairs in exchange for lower rent. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Just one bid was received for San Diego's next utility franchise agreement -- a minimum million offer from San Diego Gas & Electric to provide the city's gas and electric utilities for the next 20 years, it was revealed Thursday at a special meeting of the City Council.After months of public comment, debate and concern over the franchise agreements, the lone bid -- actually split into a million bid for natural gas and million for electric -- was a surprise for many who believed multiple energy companies had expressed interest.The utility franchise agreement bid was unsealed and presented as an informational item. The council must take action at its next meeting on Jan. 12; the existing franchise agreement with SDG&E expires Jan. 17. It was originally signed as a 50-year agreement starting in 1970.SDG&E, whose parent company is San Diego-based Sempra Energy, has been the sole electric and gas utility for San Diego since 1920.Mayor Todd Gloria and five of the nine city council members were sworn in this month, leaving them just four weeks to decide whether to approve SDG&E's minimum bid for 20 years, ask for an extension to allow new elected officials to get up to speed, cancel the process altogether and start over or pursue municipalization -- purchasing and putting the city's utilities under public control.Many of the callers who weighed in Thursday urged the council to ask Gloria and SDG&E for a one-year extension rather than forcing a bad decision during an economic crisis. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A Vista man who possessed child pornography and also secretly recorded an underage girl showering at his home via hidden camera was sentenced Friday to seven years in federal prison.Following his release from custody, Jeffrey John Lenhof, 41, will also be on supervised release for 10 years, during which he will be required to comply with conditions that include a prohibition from having contact with minors or accessing the Internet.Lenhof pleaded guilty last year to a receipt of child pornography count, following a law enforcement investigation into suspected child pornography on his computer.Homeland Security Investigations found that from as early as March 2017, child pornography files were made available from his home via a peer-to-peer file-sharing program, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.A search warrant served at his home in April of 2019 resulted in the seizure of three computers, an iPhone and an SD card that contained child pornography or were used to download or view child pornography, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.Investigators also found videos that appeared to have been recorded with hidden cameras in his home and other locations.One video showed a teenage girl, aged 13 or 14, entering the bathroom of his home, undressing and showering, with no indication she is aware of the camera's presence, court documents state. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Lab-confirmed flu cases rose nearly 70 percent in San Diego County last week as flu season continues to ramp up, the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency announced Wednesday.Doctors around the county reported 489 confirmed flu cases during the week of Dec. 8-14, an increase of 198 over the previous week's total of 291 flu cases. According to the HHSA, doctors have confirmed 1,709 flu cases since the flu season began July 1, nearly double the 932 confirmed at this time last year.No flu-related deaths were reported last week, but this flu season's seven deaths still outpace the six confirmed deaths at this time last flu season.
