BEIJING, Jan. 14 (Xinhua) - While China disagrees with the so-called "Group of Two" (G2), its cooperation with the United States is indispensable for finding solutions to many problems of the world, said Vice Foreign Minister Cui Tiankai Friday.At the second Lanting Forum, Cui spoke highly of the cooperation the two countries have conducted and called for further coordination in more areas."Both China and the United States are countries of major influence on international affairs. The two countries have conducted effective consultation and coordination in dealing with regional conflicts, fighting against terrorism, maintaining the international nonproliferation mechanisms and coping with major international issues," Cui said.He said the two countries made important contributions to help the Asia-Pacific region and the world work their way out from the financial crisis. Their active coordination promoted the successful holding of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) high-level negotiations in Copenhagen and Cancun.The two countries also share same demands in maintaining peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and working for its denuclearization, Cui said, noting the two countries are negotiating with all parties to ease the situation.Saying no country could handle the emerging global challenges without effective international cooperation, the vice foreign minister said it is also a common will of international society that the two countries would join hands and make more contribution for the world's peace and common development.The Lanting Forum, initiated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is a platform for communication and exchanges between government, the business community, academia, media and the public.The Forum aims to create a new channel to facilitate discussions on foreign policies and issues of common interest by interested parties.The theme of the second Lanting Forum is "China-US Relations in the New Era."

CANCUN, Mexico, Dec. 4 (Xinhua) -- China will not compromise on issues of principle at the ongoing UN climate change conference in Cancun, Mexico, the country's chief negotiator said on Saturday.Su Wei, the chief Chinese negotiator and head of the climate change department of China's National Development and Reform Commission, made the remarks in response to some parties' call for "compromise to make achievements.""All the parties want to reach substantial achievements at the Cancun conference, which can lay a solid foundation for the completion of 'Bali Roadmap' negotiations," Su told Xinhua in an exclusive interview."I think we can cooperate with other parties and even make compromises on some non-principle issues, but we will not compromise on the issues of principle, such as the continuation of the Kyoto Protocol, which is the basis for a package of agreements to be made in Cancun," Su said.The negotiator stressed that the developing countries have reached consensus on the principle issues. "We are keeping solidarity and trying to play a constructive role," he added.Su said some country's opposition to the Kyoto Protocol is no good news to the developing countries, and has exerted negative influence on the conference.Negotiators at the Cancun conference are trying to establish a replacement for the Kyoto Protocol, which obliges rich nations except the United States to cut greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 5.2 percent below 1990 levels by 2008-2012."At the end of the first week of the Cancun conference, there are some progresses in adaptation, finance, technology and mitigation for the developing countries, but it is hard to say if the progresses are final ones," Su observed.As for the rumors about a secret Mexican text, Su said that the president of COP16 has told the delegations from every country including China that Mexico will not put forward a secret text."As I know, Mexico, the host country of COP16, is always pursuing the principles of 'open, transparent and widening participation' for the climate negotiations this year. I believe Mexico will continue to keep the principles to try to get the results of balance at the Cancun Conference," he said.Su noted that the ministers will arrive in Cancun in the second week of the conference. CHENGDU, Nov. 21 (Xinhua) -- Twenty-eight miners were trapped in a colliery flood in southwest China's Sichuan Province on Sunday, the local safety watchdog said.The accident happened at 11 a.m. in Weiyuan County of Neijiang City.Altogether 41 miners were working underground when a pit of Batian Coal Mine was flooded. Thirteen of them escaped, said Lin Shucheng, chief of the provincial work safety bureau.He said rescuers had begun pumping flood water from the pit early in the afternoon. BEIJING, Dec. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese officials and Communist Party cadres have been warned against financial violations and extravagance in the name of New Year celebrations.The Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the Ministry of Supervision have issued a circular, asking officials and cadres to be self-disciplined and practice frugality during the holiday season.Party officials must not accept gifts in any form, said the circular, which offers a list of prohibited items and services that "could influence the fairness of official duty," such as attending banquets, and expenses-paid travels and entertainment.The holiday season of 2011 starts from New Year's day and continues into the Spring Festival, or the Chinese New Year, which falls on February 3.The Chinese tradition of presenting gifts to family members and friends during the Lunar New Year has been extended to sending gifts to officials, which poses a challenge to the country's anti-corruption efforts.The circular also warned officials to avoid extravagance, and prohibited them from spending sprees using public money for personal gains.Instead, the limited public money and resources should be spent on developing the economy and improving people's livelihoods, it said.Further, the circular told discipline inspection authorities at all levels to seriously crack down on any violations of the law and disciplines.
