SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Humane Society warned pet owners this week to be safe with their animals while exercising after a dog collapsed in hot weather. A dog named Joey was half a mile down the Three Sisters Falls trail in Descanso Saturday when he started panting heavily, a sign of heatstroke. “Dogs are lower to the ground, absorbing heat from above and below,” according to the SDHS. Temperatures in Descanso reached a high of 86 Saturday, according to 10News meteorologist Megan Parry.The SDHS Emergency Response Team took Joey to Animal Urgent Care in Escondido, where he was treated for heat exhaustion and separating pads. Joey recovered and returned home with his owner. Three Sisters Falls trail in East County is an arduous hike for humans which can be dangerous during summer. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The San Diego Medical Examiner ruled the death of a teenager who jumped off a bridge in Carmel Valley was an accident. Ruben Ortiz, 18, was one of six people in a Nissan Altima on July 9 when the car crashed on SR-56.Two passengers got out of the car and ran away, officers said. Ortiz and 17-year-old Jesse Garcia jumped 80 feet off the bridge into Gonzales Creek, not realizing it was a dangerous drop, according to investigators. Garcia and Ortiz, who suffered multiple blunt force injuries, died at the scene. RELATED: Teen identified after deadly jump from Carmel Valley bridge following crash A toxicology test showed Ortiz had THC and a trace amount of alcohol in his blood. California Highway Patrol officers said Garcia had been driving the night of the crash. Investigators found an open beer can in the center console. Two girls, ages 14 and 15, suffered severe injuries. The two unharmed passengers were later found for questioning.The CHP has not determined why the car spun out of control. 1030

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The San Diego Registrar of Voters is revising down its expected turnout numbers for the March primary from earlier projections. With an estimated 290,000 ballots still outstanding as of Thursday evening, turnout is now expected to fall between 47 and 52 percent of the county's registered voters. This means turnout will look similar to 2016's primary, which had about 50 percent participation. Original projections in January from the Registrar of Voters showed expectations of turnout between 55 and 60 percent. That number was revised in February to between 50 and 55 percent."It looks like turnout in this primary is about what it was in 2016 in San Diego," said professor Thad Kousser, department chair of the UC San Diego political science department. "We didn't see the spike we were expecting."However, Kousser points out that using turnout percentage can be misleading. Because of California's new Motor Voter law, there are more than 300,000 more registered voters in San Diego County than there were in 2016. Therefore, a matching 50 percent turnout would actually mean tens of thousands of new voters cast ballots in the 2020 primary. 1173

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — This week, thousands of letters, pictures, and cards from local groups were sent to veterans who were not able to visit memorials in their honor this year due to the pandemic.Honor Flight San Diego usually takes veterans to visit memorials in Washington D.C. built in their honor. This year, due to the coronavirus pandemic, that flight won't take to the sky again until May 2021.Organizers had collected 3,000 letters and cards from local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, church organizations, and the national organization, Solider Angels, for previously scheduled flights.In San Diego, 120 San Diego County WWII and Korean War veterans were sent care packages on Friday. Two of those packages were hand-delivered to local veterans by Honor Flight San Diego Founder Dave Smith and Chairman Julie Brightwell.Honor Flight is a trip at no cost to veterans and has taken more than 1,400 WWII and Korean War veterans in San Diego across the country to visit war memorials.
