BEIJING, April 14 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao held talks with Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt here Monday. Both agreed to deepen cooperation. During their talks, Wen said as the first western country to establish diplomatic ties with the People's Republic of China 58 years ago, Sweden and China have continued to increase mutual trust and understanding, as well as expand cooperation in all areas. The recent years, in particular, have seen rapid growth in bilateral trade volume, said Wen, noting that China has become the largest trade partner for Sweden in Asia. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao holds talks with Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, on April 14, 2008Fruitful results have been made in bilateral investment and technological cooperation with vigorous exchanges among the two peoples and sound coordination in international affairs. Wen said against the backdrop of development of economic globalization, enhancing bilateral cooperation is in the fundamental interests of the two countries and is conducive to promote China-EU strategic partnership. China is ready to maintain high-level contacts and consultations at all levels, and develop exchanges and cooperation in human rights on the basis of equality and mutual respect. China will also actively expand cooperation in environment protection and energy saving technology, create conditions to encourage business investment and trade exchange, as well as cement exchanges in culture and social development, said the premier. In response, Reinfeldt said Sweden attached importance to keeping good dialogue and cooperation with China. Sweden is opposed to trade protection against China and is willing to further expand bilateral cooperation in trade, investment and protection of intellectual property right. Reinfeldt also expressed his hope of strengthening exchanges and cooperation with China in energy saving, emission reduction and climate change in accordance with the principle of common but differentiated responsibilities. After their talks, the two leaders attended a signing ceremony of a series of agreements concerning environment protection, sustainable development and communication. China's top legislator Wu Bangguo also met with Reinfeldt. Both of them pledged to enhance political dialogue, expand cooperation under the principle of mutual respect, equality and mutual benefits. Reinfeldt arrived in Beijing on Sunday, continuing his five-day state visit to China. BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- President Hu Jintao on Thursday urged the Chinese army to carry forward the courageous spirit it had shown in the earthquake relief work earlier this year to better serve the people. Hu, also the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee general secretary and Central Military Commission chairman, made the remark here while meeting soldiers and officers who were recognized for their outstanding contributions to the disaster relief work. On Wednesday, China held a ceremony to honor outstanding organizations and individuals for their contributions to the rescue and relief work after a catastrophic earthquake hit the southwestern Sichuan and some neighboring provinces on May 12, leaving more than 87,000 dead or missing. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) troops and armed police were among the first to provide rescue and relief following the quake. In total, 146,000 troops, armed police, reservists and police were mobilized for the rescue and relief. Chinese President Hu Jintao (1st. Hu spoke highly of the army's key role in the arduous work. He said the PLA should draw from the experience to strengthen its capabilities against various threats to the nation's security. Guo Boxiong, CPC Central Military Commission vice chairman, described the army's involvement in the relief as "a large-scale, non-war military action," which tested and tempered the PLA's security-safeguarding abilities. He said strong and unified leadership, high morale and well-planned logistic support in the army were vital to the success of the quake relief.

KIEV, Sept 19 (Xinhua) -- The Seventh Euro-China Forum ended Friday in Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, as participants called for further dialogue and cooperation between China and Europe. In the three-day forum entitled "Silk Road of the 21st century," nearly 200 politicians, academicians, economists from Europe and Asia discussed Sino-Europe relations and economic cooperation. Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko said China has made great achievements in its economic development and "Ukraine is willing to learn China's successful experiences and strengthen exchanges and cooperation with China." China has just successfully hosted the 2008 Olympic Games and its scale and level was impressive, the president said in a message to the forum. Addressing the forum, former French Prime Minister Laurent Fabius said that apart from economic cooperation, the Europeans and Chinese should enhance their cultural exchanges to know each other even better. "The economic and trade relations is the core of the Europe- China cooperation. We, Europeans and Chinese, should seize every opportunity to smoothen out potential frictions and to bridge the gap between the intensification of our commercial relationship and the weakness of our intellectual exchanges. In this respect, the Euro-China Forum plays a crucial part. And its influence keeps growing." he said. Fabius also noted that Europe in the past called China "a sleeping giant" and the giant is now waking up. "The success of the Beijing Olympic Games showed China's vigor and enthusiasm," he said. Chinese ambassador to Ukraine Zhou Li said that Ukraine is an important country in Europe and the Chinese government attaches great importance to developing relations with Ukraine and Europe. The bilateral economic and trade relations between China and Ukraine have developed steadily in recent years, he said. "I believe the friendly cooperative relations between China and Ukraine will see a more brilliant future thanks to bilateral joint efforts," Zhou Li said. The non-governmental forum was initiated by China Europe International Business School to foster unofficial exchanges between the two sides of the Eurasian continent. The forum was first held in 2002 in Barcelona, Spain.
