SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Living in San Diego is already expensive, and paying for satellite or cable TV can make it even more costly. Now, a growing number of residents are saying goodbye to cable and satellite, and subscribing to more affordable streaming services. "Really for us, I just felt guilty flipping through those channels all the time because I knew we're paying for them, but at the same time if it's not Game of Thrones we're not really watching anyway," said Jason Stump, who got rid of cable about four weeks ago. Stump, who lives in La Mesa, kept his cable for years because he feared not being able to watch live sports. But everything changed when he discovered that YouTube TV offered Fox Sports San Diego, which carries the Padres, four versions of ESPN, and the local channels. The price tag? a month, down from the 0 he was paying monthly for cable. "You might get one of the cable cutting services a month, but you want to add HBO, and that's a month," he said. This fall, however, he'll have to make a choice. He wants NFL Network, but unlike his former cable service, YouTube TV doesn't provide it. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Memorial Day Weekend kicked off Friday night on the USS Midway. As a part of their Legacy Week, they had their annual benefit concert. This year, Daughtry took the stage. Kevin Beam is a big fan and made sure to buy his tickets early, “you got Memorial Day Weekend, Daughtry and beautiful San Diego”. People filled the top deck of the Midway. Ahead of the concert, the USS Midway Foundation presented three ,800 checks to different local charities. The night served as a way for people to remember and honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Penny Erickson was especially grateful for the event Friday, “I’m from a military family my dad was from Pearl Harbor so it means a lot to me.” Chuck Erickson is a volunteer for the USS Midway and a veteran. Friday night, he tells 10News he’s making sure he is grateful all weekend long, “a lot of people lost their lives giving us the freedom we have today”. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Just days after her 97th birthday, a San Diego woman was honored for being a trailblazer in the Marine Corps. Sgt. Maj. Grace Carle's love for her country is apparent in her impressive resume. The retired Marine served during WWII, the Korean War, and Vietnam."She's always been a strong woman. She did what she was told to do, and she did it with honor. She wanted to be proud of what she did," said Jennie Larsen, Carle's niece. Carle was one of nine siblings and joined the Marine Corps when she was 20. She's now the last living Sergeant Major of the U.S. Marine Corps Women's Reserve and was one of only six women to hold the position. "When she went in she worked hard to get all of her advancements, and it's things like giving the women a chance to do jobs that the men had been doing and showing that the women were capable of holding these same positions and doing the same type of work," said Larsen.Carle was recently admitted to Somerset Subacute and Care, where social worker Lisa Abbott met the retired Marine. "When they told me she was a big deal in the Marines, I started googling her!" Abbott said.Carle will soon be entering hospice care, so Abbott decided they needed to honor her. "Somebody like Ms. Carle who's done so much for our country, and for America, and for women in general, this is going to be probably our last chance to thank her and honor her. While she's with us, we're going to take that opportunity," said Abbott. They held a ceremony for Carle at the facility, which included taps by Bugles Across America."The Marine life was her life, and she was very proud to serve this country, you couldn't have asked for a better person," said Larsen.Larsen says her aunt served in the Marine Corps for over 30 years. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Many Asian American business owners continue to struggle during the pandemic, but a North County teen is hoping to help by creating a website to support local restaurants."I was hearing a lot of stories about Asians in my community experiencing discrimination during the pandemic," said 17-year-old Kaia Culotta.The teen said coming from a family of small business owners, she wanted to do something to help."I realized that there wasn't an easily accessible, comprehensible list of Asian owned businesses in my community," said Culotta. "So, I saw a need for that."For weeks, Culotta learned how to code through free programs online to build a website. The "Help Asian Owned Businesses" site has an extensive list of restaurants located around the county.Culotta said her project sparked the interest of San Diego City Councilmember Chris Cate. He even shared a video promoting the site on social media."It is awesome. It's such a neat thing to be doing out of the goodness of her heart," said Joe Kao, owner of R3fresh Juice Bar.After seeing Cate's video, the small business owner reached out to the teen to thank her for putting the site together.Kao said his business, like many others, had fewer customers during the pandemic. "We definitely saw a drop in business, but we've stayed open," he said.Kao applauds Culotta's work and thanks her for thinking of the county's small Asian business owners. 1430
