BEIJING, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- A well-known economist said Monday that the biggest problem in China is not inflation, but shifting its economic structure to maintain sustainable growth."The biggest challenge faced by China is economic restructuring in order to shift the economy to a more balanced way that will provide sustainable economic growth," Stephen Roach, former chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia, told Xinhua."In the post-crisis environment, the shift means to build a consumer-led economy, and that is the overriding challenge in China," said Roach, who currently serves as non-executive chairman of Morgan Stanley Asia.Residents' incomes in China remain at a low level. "People's incomes are only 42 percent of the GDP, whereas in the US the rate is 86 percent. So the government should raise the income of the citizens, especially when China wants to stimulate domestic private consumption," said Roach."Of course, that does not mean the Chinese government should ignore the risk of higher inflation," he said.Official data showed that China's October Consumer Price Index (CPI), a major gauge of inflation, rose to a 25-month high at 4.4 percent."There is a certain amount of momentum to inflation, so it's likely to be the a problem over the next 12 months. If the government acts quickly, it will be able to limit the problem, or else China could be facing this problem in 2012 as well," said Roach.Roach suggested China should take broad and comprehensive approaches in dealing with inflation, and the medium-term goal of the shifted economic structure need to be maintained."The government has to demonstrate its resolve in dealing with inflation, and property market assets. It's a challenge, but I think the government is up to the challenge," according to Roach.

EDINBURGH, Britain, Jan. 9 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang arrived here on Sunday for a four-day official visit to Britain.Upon his arrival, Li said in a statement delivered at the airport that recent years have seen steady progress in China-Britain relations and that increasingly strong political ties and fruitful cooperation across the board have brought real benefits to the peoples in both countries."In the midst of profound changes of the global landscape, closer cooperation between China and Britain will not only benefit the two counties and peoples, but also contribute to world peace, stability and prosperity," he added.Li stressed that he hopes to explore with the British side ways to cooperate more closely and turn the two countries into partners of mutual respect and equality in the political arena, partners of mutual benefits and shared growth on the economic front and partners of close coordination and equal cooperation on international affairs.Edinburgh is Li's first stop in Britain. BEIJING, Dec. 30 (Xinhua) -- China has made steady progress in containing the spread of illegal publications and cracking down on the dissemination of lewd content through the Internet and mobile phones in 2010, according to the National Office Against Pornographic and Illegal Publications.The office has recently disclosed the following facts and figures about the related efforts China has made so far this year:-- Around 44.37 million copies of illegal publications, including 981,000 copies of lewd content, 37.35 million pirated copies, some 3.93 million illegal copies of newspapers and magazines, among others, have been confiscated across China.-- More than 16,000 cases, including over 10,000 ones of pirated publications, 1,669 cases involving pornography, and 371 cases involving fake journalists, news reports or media outlets, have been uncovered this year.-- China has shut down more than 60,000 porn websites since launching a crackdown in December 2009.-- Law enforcers across China during a campaign launched in April had destroyed a total of 36.39 million copies of pirated or illegal publications, audio and video discs.-- The office has received over 170,000 tip-offs, mostly about the online or cellphone-based spreading of porn content this year and 534 people have been rewarded 544,000 yuan (81,964 dollars) for the information provided.-- Authorities in Zhongshan City of southern Guangdong Province shut down a huge disc-producing outfit with five production lines and confiscated 3.87 million illegal discs.
