KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Rep. Steve Watkins, R-Kansas, faces criminal charges associated with voting irregularities.Shawnee County District Attorney Mike Kagay announced Tuesday that Watkins has been charged with interfering with law enforcement by providing false information, voting without being qualified and unlawful advance voting. Just weeks ahead of the midterm elections, U.S. election databases are coming under attack.A new report finds election hacking attempts have been building since April. One troubling note: the government does not know who is behind the attacks.“Well, it is worrisome. The more we know, the better,” says John Fortier, with the Bipartisan Policy Center. “But I also do think, in the world that we have, we are going to have unknown actors, whether foreign or domestic, making attempts to get into systems.”The good news is that, so far, Homeland Security says none of the attacks have been successful.Fortier thinks that's a sign of enhanced election security and better communication between election officials.“I think we are in a better place now to identify those threats and communicate those threats between federal and local and state election officials, and I think that's a step up,” Fortier says.As the midterms approach, the head of Homeland Security says the government will also be using other security tools, including sensors that allow federal officials to see inside state computer systems in order to detect if there are signs of hacking attempts.“Our network security sensors will cover 90 percent of registered voters,” says Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen. “And on election day, we'll be in full force and hosting a virtual nationwide situation room to assist our partners.Experts continue to insist that voter databases, like registration information, is more at risk than hackers being able to change actual votes. 1559

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Scripps affiliate KSHB-TV had a photographer's camera rolling as a tornado touched down north of Salina, Kansas Tuesday evening.Meteorologist Gerard Jebaily was out in a Stormtracker vehicle tracking a storm cell in central Kansas. JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Charles Evers, the older brother of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers and a longtime figure in Mississippi politics, has died in Mississippi. He was 97. A coroner says Evers died of "natural causes" Wednesday in Brandon. Medgar Evers was a Mississippi NAACP leader who was assassinated outside his Jackson home in 1963. Charles Evers in 1969 became the first Black candidate since Reconstruction to win a mayor's race in any multiracial town in Mississippi. He ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1971 and for U.S. Senate in 1978, both times as an independent. He was later a Republican but publicly supported Barack Obama for president. 671

(KGTV) -- Border Patrol and a host of other government agencies are investigating after authorities found a cross-border tunnel in the east San Diego County town of Jacumba.The tunnel was discovered by Mexican State Police on September 19 just 221 feet south of the U.S./Mexico boundary.On October 4, agents found an entry point that was roughly 31 feet deep. The total length of the tunnel is 627 feet, 336 feet of which is in the United States.The average length of the tunnel was three feet high and two and a half feet wide. An exit shaft was discovered, but didn't break the surface into the U.S. RELATED: Cross-border tunnel leading to KFC found in YumaOn top of the massive tunnel, authorities discovered a complex system used to light and ventilate the tunnel. The system included solar panels used to run the electrical, lighting and ventilation systems, and a pump system used to get rid of any water inside the tunnel.Authorities didn’t say whether any arrests have been made or what the tunnel was supposed to be used for, though the Drug Enforcement Administration is one of the investigating agencies. 1149
