SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A free course is helping people with brain injuries rebuild their sense of self. Offered at San Diego Continuing Education (SDCE), the Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) class is a noncredit/non-fee course. It supports people recovering from ABIs like brain trauma, stroke/aneurysm, brain tumor, brain infection, and anoxia. SDCE's ABI curriculum equips students with the tools needed to achieve daily tasks and long-term goals to support their transition back into career and education. Classes emphasize rebuilding a sense of self through cognitive retraining, personal development, communication, academic skills, vocational exploration, coping strategies, creativity development, and advocacy awareness.For traumatic brain injury survivors like Marine Corps veteran Mario Sanders, the program has been lifechanging."No one is ever prepared for life with a brain injury, this program definitely gave me the strategies, the techniques; it made me able to cope with it, it made me able to live with it," said Sanders. The Camp Pendleton Marine was in a severe car accident in 2016. He was hospitalized for six months and had to re-learn how to walk again."One minute I'm being a Marine, the next I'm in the hospital confused and dazed, I couldn't walk, I had no idea what happened," said Sanders. Today he suffers from memory problems and weakness on his left side, but Sanders is far more accepting of his injury."Life with a brain injury is hard, but it's not impossible."Sanders is dually enrolled at San Diego Miramar College and will complete an Associate in Arts in Kinesiology for Transfer Degree. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A 74-year-old woman was pinned between a U-Haul van and a retaining wall after chasing after the runaway van in Valencia Park.After exiting the van Saturday at about 7:30 a.m., the woman failed to set the parking brake, San Diego Police said. As the van started rolling northbound on Valencia Parkway, the woman gave chase.She was re-entering the vehicle when it veered to the left, struck a fire hydrant, a retaining wall, and another vehicle, police say, pinning the woman between the van and the wall.The woman suffered non life-threatening injuries, including a fractured pelvis.SDPD Traffic Officers were investigating the incident Saturday. 673

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A 2-year-old boy who was reported missing by his stepfather in San Diego in 2002 suffered a fatal injury and died while in the sole custody and care of the stepfather, who disposed of the body, a prosecutor said Thursday, but a defense attorney said her client loved the child and didn't kill him.Tieray Jones, 39, told police that Jahi Turner disappeared from a park near the southern end of Balboa Park the afternoon of April 25, 2002.Deputy District Attorney Bill Mitchell told a jury that Jones married Jahi's mother -- Tameka Jones -- after Jahi was born and the couple moved to San Diego from Maryland in February 2002.The defendant was left to care for Jahi when Tameka Jones -- who was in the Navy -- went out to sea on April 22, 2002, the prosecutor said.Three days later, the defendant called 911 and said his step son disappeared in the park when the defendant walked to a vending machine."We will piece together what happened that week," Mitchell told thejury. "You're gonna know what happened to Jahi based on the evidence."Two days before he reported the child missing, Jones told his wife that Jahi had fallen off the bed and bumped his head, but it was "no big deal," the prosecutor said.Jones also complained that Jahi had wet the bed, according to Mitchell. Witnesses at the apartment complex where Jones lived said they saw the defendant carrying three large trash bags to a Dumpster just before the trash was to be picked up the day before the child disappeared, the prosecutor told the jury.One neighbor commented, "It didn't look like regular trash," Mitchell said. The prosecutor pointed to "glaring inconsistencies" in the defendant's statements to police about what happened.Mitchell said there was "no credible evidence" that Jahi was at the park that day. Despite a massive search, the child's body was never found.Jones was arrested in April 2016 in North Carolina and brought back to San Diego to face a murder charge.Deputy Public Defender Courtney Cutter told the jury that her client was a suspect in his stepson's disappearance almost immediately.Cutter said the defendant and Tameka Jones were used to just "getting by" and had very little when they moved to San Diego.The attorney said her client loved Jahi as if he were his own. "Tieray did not kill this child," Cutter told the jury."He was an imperfect father, yes, but not a reluctant one." SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A Bankers Hill man returned home to a knife-wielding man in his kitchen, leading to a frantic dash out of the neighborhood."I heard my neighbor pull up. I'm a light sleeper. Within a couple minutes, I heard sirens coming from every direction," said Tom.Tom, who asked us not to identify him, says two Sundays ago before 1 a.m., surveillance cameras showed his neighbor parking in front of his home. In the video, the homeowner is seen walking to his front door. An outdoor light turns off, and suddenly, another light comes on. Tom says that's when his neighbor encountered a stranger in his kitchen."He came home and found the guy standing at his back door with a bottle of alcohol from his cabinet, and a knife from his butcher block. He backed off a bit and called police," said Tom.The intruder ran out the back. He is then seen making his way to the front of the home, across the street and right to Tom's front door."He tries to get into my house. It's locked so he takes off down the street," said Tom. Tom says a man fitting the same description has been spotted stealing bikes and casing homes in the area. As for the recent break-in, Tom says it's not clear how the man got in, but video of the motion-activated lights suggest he was in the home for nearly an hour."It's more than a violation. You start to lose your sense of security, and that's the worst part of it," said Tom.The intruder is described as a white male, between 20 and 30 years old, 5’6"-5’8", 155 lbs, with tattoos on both forearms. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- Two San Diego-area teachers are among six state finalists announced Tuesday for the 2020 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.According to the State Department of Education, the award honors teachers who "display subject mastery, appropriate use of instructional methods and strategies, lifelong learning and leadership in education outside the classroom."The PAEMST is presented by the National Science Foundation. Up to 108 teachers are recognized each year."These teachers are incredible educators, role models and mentors to all those around them, and through mastery of their craft, they inspire students to study math, technology, engineering, and science -- including computer science," State Education Secretary Tony Thurmond said. "They're bright stars and prime examples of excellence in our educational system, and we hope that all students can enroll in great STEAM and computer science programs with educators like them, to prepare them for the jobs of tomorrow."Khamphet Pease, a sixth-grade teacher at Wilson Middle School in San Diego, was named a finalist in the mathematics category. An educator for 14 years, Pease teaches courses in Introduction to Coding; Gateway to Technology: Design and Modeling, Automation and Robotics; and Computer Science for Innovators and Makers. From 2014-16 she also mentored 16 high school girls from schools across the county to build a microlab experiment that was sent to the International Space Station to test zero gravity.Marlys Williamson, a fifth-grade teacher at Wolf Canyon Elementary in Chula Vista, was named a finalist in the science category.
