What makes a successful relationship? As some couples have found out during the pandemic, and researchers have scientifically discovered, it may boil down to how you engage with each other and how committed each partner is.A study published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences looked at responses from more than 11,000 romantic couples, tracked over about a year.“People’s own judgments about the relationship itself—such as how satisfied and committed they perceived their partners to be, and how appreciative they felt toward their partners—explained approximately 45% of their current satisfaction,” the study’s authors note. “The partner’s judgments did not add information, nor did either person’s personalities or traits.”Top relationship-specific predictors of relationship quality:Perceived partner commitmentAppreciationSexual satisfactionPerceived partner satisfactionConflictA person's own perception of their relationship accounted for about 45 percent of their current satisfaction with their relationship at the onset of a study, and about 18 percent by the end of the study. The study’s authors note the results are based on self-reporting and more study is needed over a longer period of time to see if these characteristics hold true over the long run.If you haven’t lately, it might be a good time to let your partner know that you appreciate them. 1402
While fans are not allowed to attend any MLB games in the shortened 2020 season, the Oakland Athletics came up with a brilliant way to "bring in" fans. The team unveiled its "Coliseum Cutouts" program, where A's fans will get a chance to display the cardboard cutout of themselves during games. The team's staff will try to fill the stands with the cutouts. Prices range from to 9 for each cutout. If a cutout in the program's foul ball zone gets hit with a foul ball, the A's will send the ball to that fan.Proceeds from this program will benefit the team's charity partners. With every purchase of a cutout, the fan will also receive two complimentary tickets to the A's first exhibition game at the Coliseum during the 2021 season. WFTS' KJ Hiramoto first reported this story. 794

With increased expenditures and decreased tax revenues, the debt owed by the US federal government is expected to exceed the GDP of the US in 2021, according to a government analysis. On Wednesday, the Congressional Budget Office released the updated figures showing that the federal government’s debt is projected to be 104% of the size of the economy in fiscal year 2021. 2021 is expected to be the first time since 1946 that the amount of debt is larger than the size of the economy. The CBO’s projection shows that the debt is expected to remain larger than the size of the economy through the upcoming decade. For several decades following World War II, the amount of debt the US owed relative to the size of the economy decreased, bottoming out in 1974 at 23%. The US debt began increasing in the 70s and 80s as balanced budgets became more of an exception. The last time the US had a balanced budget was in 2001. While the US debt burden decreased for most of George W. Bush’s presidency, it began to skyrocket amid the last recession. The CBO says that while 2020 saw a slight decline in revenue, the year saw a massive increase in government spending amid the coronavirus pandemic. To see the full analysis, click here. 1231
