SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Two years after Lime scooters hit the pavement, the company has reached a milestone - surpassing 100 million rides globally. The company is thanking its riders who span across more than 120 cities, 30 countries, and five continents.A San Diego chef is one of those riders; in fact, he too reached a personal milestone. "My name is Justin Vaiciunas, and I am San Diego's #1 Lime rider!"A Lime representative called Vaiciunas last week to tell him about the accomplishment; Vaiciunas clocked in nearly 600 rides this year."I live right over off of Pacific Highway, and I scooter from there to work every day and back, and then also all around; even to Balboa Park, North Park, everywhere I can," said Vaiciunas. Vaiciunas likes how accessible and easy the scooters make it getting around downtown. He now uses them for 80 percent of his commutes. "I used to spend about in gas a week; now I maybe spend that a month."The company says with the growth they've increased education outreach as well as efforts to be good stewards in the cities they serve. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two separate studies show flu and pneumonia vaccines may reduce your risks of developing Alzheimer’s disease in the future.The findings were presented on Monday during the Alzheimer’s Association International Conference, which was held virtually for the first time because of COVID-19. The conference was supposed to be in Amsterdam this year.In one study, researchers found that getting a flu shot showed a 17% reduction in the development of the disease. The earlier people got the vaccine, the better the protection against the disease.“Each year, successively, if they did get another flu shot they got more reduction, so almost up to a 30 to 35% of a reduction of the development of dementia, just by getting the flu shot,” said Katie Croskrey, the executive director of the San Diego/Imperial chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association.In a separate study, researchers found similar reductions for developing dementia for those that received a pneumonia vaccine between the ages of 65 and 75.“You had a reduction of almost 40% of not developing dementia,” said Croskrey.Croskrey said these studies are just the starting point for more research to find out how the vaccines are correlated to reducing the risks of the disease. More research is also needed to determine if just getting the vaccines alone reduce the risk, or if it has to do more with lifestyle changes.Also announced on Monday, research that shows that individuals with dementia are six times more likely to die after infections than those that do not have dementia.The virtual international conference continues on Tuesday, where researchers are expected to discuss blood biomarkers that could identify a person with a potential for developing Alzheimer’s up to 20 years before any symptoms appear. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Two young teenagers have been arrested for their alleged involvement in the deadly shooting of a College Area man. According to San Diego Police, the two juveniles, ages 14 and 15 were taken into custody and placed into Juvenile Hall. “The names of the juveniles will not be released due to their age,” police said. 39-year-old Ishi Hampton was shot and killed on May 2 outside the “Iconic at Alvarado” apartments in the College Area. At some point, investigators say they shot him and ran toward Alvarado Hospital. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Windmill Farms Community Market in Del Cerro is asking for the public's help locating their stolen trailer.The family-owned grocery store has been serving San Diego since 2003 with a mission to provide healthy, organic foods at affordable prices. Surveillance video from the early morning hours on Sunday captures a white SUV with black rims circling the market. At around 4:30 a.m. the SUV hauls off the trailer. “Just unbelievable," said Michael Villegas, produce manager and buyer. “That trailer was a big part of our business; everything we had for our events was in that trailer."Villegas is also in charge of the store's community events, like bringing food to the Lake Murray 4th of July Fireworks and bringing fresh produce to schools. “Schools depend on us to do the events, if we have to start over it’s going to be tough," said Villegas.The trailer held all their tents, tarps, tables, and BBQ's.Villegas estimates the loss at around ,000. “I just hope we can get it back, you know, that would be awesome if we could get it back, if anybody seen anything give us a call," said Villegas. A spokesperson for San Diego Police says a report was filed and a detective should get the case in a few days. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- While many of California's communities are starting to resemble ghost towns, some businesses are keeping busy, including here in San Diego.Ever since Governor Newsom issued a stay-at-home order this week, San Diego residents are restricting contact with the outside world. Some locals say they're concerned not having access to life's essentials, but others are discovering delivery apps and services to get them through self-isolation. Since the Stay-at-home Order, phones at the Eldahmy Wellness Pharmacy in La Jolla and Barrio Logan have not stopped ringing. It's because they have a pharmacist available 24/7, and they not offer free deliveries-- not just on prescriptions, but over-the-counter items as well. "We want to help people," Ahmed Eldahmy, Founder of Eldahmy Wellness Pharmacy, said. "It doesn't have to be a patient of ours. Anyone can call us, and we will deliver to you as long as you're in San Diego County. "Many San Diegans have started using delivery services like these for anything and everything. "We're really trying to stay in the house as much as possible," a Carmel Valley man told 10News.He has a wife and three young children. One of his daughters has Celiac Disease. She requires a special, gluten-free diet. He said he could not find anything on the shelves, so he searched online and found Instacart."I downloaded the app, and I placed the order, not knowing if it will be for filled or not, and that was Monday," he said. "They scheduled a delivery for Friday, and it worked out relatively well. We probably got 90% of the stuff we had ordered."For a small fee, a personal shopper went to Costco on his behalf. He said his experience couldn't have been better. "As he gets to something that is not available, he was messaging me saying 'Hey, would you like this as an alternative?'" he said. "Yea, I would've hugged the guy if I could!"He also online-ordered other goods from retailers shops ad wineries. Many he said are now offering discounts. "We had set up Daily Harvest for a weekly delivery so we have some things for my daughter, and I'm trying to support local businesses too, knowing that they are going to get hit hard," he said. "We had ordered some wine from Orfila Vineyards in Escondido. We also made an order from Seaside Market. We love their stuff and ordered some of the cracked tri-tips that arrived two days later."He said he plans to use these online and delivery apps until he gets the all-clear. They wear white coats and navigate empty roads.
