But now, you can do the same for your health.In her radio show and podcast "Passport Mommy," Michelle Jerson talks about all things motherhood."We cover everything that parents are going through," Jerson said.Jerson said she chose that name because she says motherhood is a journey. These days though, Jerson is on her own personal journey — wanting to know everything she can about her family health."As a new mom, I want to pass that information on to my children," Jerson said. "I want them to be educated. I want them to have as much knowledge as they can have so they can make informed decisions. So, when they go to the doctor's office, and they ask those first few questions about family history, they're not saying, 'I'm not sure.'"But she says it's even more complicated than that."My mom was adopted, and she never found out who her biological father was and just recently found out who her biological mother is," Jerson said. "She did get some limited information health-wise, but for me, it's very important for us to find out as much as we can about our family history and our health."Jerson heard about a new test from Ancestry — one of the leading genealogy services — that provides a DNA analysis of a user's health. Jerson sent off the saliva sample test and is awaiting results.Dr. Sarah South, the Vice President of Ancestry Health, says scientists look at DNA to see if a person is more at risk for common inherited conditions — things like cancer, heart disease, high cholesterol or blood disorders."This isn't just information about something that might happen. This is information about what might happen but also how to prevent it," South said.There's still a lot to learn about this kind of science, but South says finding out health information can be both empowering and reassuring — especially now.South says that during the pandemic, they've been getting a lot more interest."Certainly, this pandemic has just heightened people's awareness of taking preventive action," South said. "So, it's absolutely top of mind for a lot of individuals who now recognize that taking care of preventative and taking care of their health, being in that driver seat. This is the right time for it, and the technology is clear."South says that regardless of what a person may or not learn from the test that it's still important to get regular health screenings. After receiving results, people should discuss what they discover with their doctors and make sure they follow up with preventative care — and remember that not every disease is linked to genetics.South also says that moms are usually the health care managers within families, as they tend to have the most interest. With that in mind, Jerson says she's taking the time to learn more about her own lineage."It's really empowering to know that we have a way to do this and that, yes, there are still states that have the adoption records locked and sealed so you can't even get access to them," Jerson said. "So, any way that you can do (research) on your own, I think is great."Whatever her test results yield, it's just the beginning of a larger mystery that could hopefully open a lot of doors. 3338

The House Committee on Labor and Education is holding a hearing on the topic of reopening schools amid the coronavirus pandemic on Thursday — about a week after Democrats on the committee said the White House blocked health officials from testifying during the hearing.Last Friday, CNN and Politico reported that Democrats' request to have CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield testify at the hearing was denied by the White House."Dr. Redfield has testified on the Hill at least four times over the last three months. The NFL is placing all teams in intensive protocol starting Saturday to mitigate the risk of COVID-19 as the number of cases rises around the country.Use of masks will be mandatory at all times at team facilities, including during practice and in weight rooms. Meetings must be held either virtually or in the largest indoor space with approval by the league. Meals have to be made available for grab-and-go to avoid players and staff congregating in cafeterias. Time spent in the locker room also has to be limited.Clubs operating under the intensive protocols have reduced close contacts by more than 50% since the fifth week of the regular season, according to a memo obtained by The Associated Press that was sent from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to teams on Wednesday.“These sustained reductions and the resulting health and safety benefits make it appropriate to implement the intensive protocols on a mandatory, league-wide basis,” Goodell said in the memo.So far, 28 teams have entered intensive protocol at some point and 16 teams have done it more than once.“The upcoming holidays, beginning with Thanksgiving next week, will introduce new risks of exposure that we need to address now,” Goodell wrote. “Because we have a highly sophisticated program of daily testing, we know when the virus enters our facilities, which underscores the importance of contact tracing and other steps to minimize close contacts within a facility.“Recent experience has highlighted the importance of minimizing high-risk close contacts; on multiple occasions, we have seen individuals identified on that basis test positive within a short time. We have also seen many instances in which effective action by clubs to minimize these close contacts prevented the virus from spreading within the club, and avoided players or coaches being ruled out of practice or games.”The NFL said Tuesday there were 17 new confirmed positives among players and 35 among other personnel during testing from Nov. 8-14. That brought the league’s total to 95 players and 175 other personnel since Aug. 1, not counting new cases this week.“The biggest motivator I find when we talk to the clubs about this is simply that if they are not in compliance with the protocols from a mask-wearing perspective or for some reason somebody forgot their device or something like that, they’re much more likely to be identified as a high-risk close contact than they would otherwise,” said Jeff Miller, the league’s executive vice president of communications, public affairs and policy.“So when that individual coach or player is removed from the team environment for five days because their mask was down, that’s a lesson learned throughout the facility. And so I don’t think we see a lot of repeat problems as far as that goes. Not everybody’s perfect all the time. But I think the biggest enforcement piece is taking somebody out of the team environment and potentially costing them the opportunity to play in the game or to go through a week’s worth of the practice. I think that part of it is a little bit undersold. The Kirchner family has a lot to celebrate this holiday season. Their son, Karson, is a happy and energetic 11-month-old baby. He's come a long way since being diagnosed with a rare heart condition that will require constant vigilance. But his progress is yet another example of how, this year, doctors are making amazing strides in so many ways.Josh and Ashley Kirchner weren't sure how much time they would have with their son. At 28 weeks pregnant, they found out he had hypoplastic left heart syndrome, meaning the left side of his heart was underdeveloped."They came back with a doctor and then we're kind of like, 'This isn't good'. And the doctor told us, 'Well, we can't find part of his heart on the ultrasound'," recalled Josh Kirchner.Some research led the Kirchners to Children's Hospital Colorado, where Karson was enrolled in a study to determine if stem cells from his own umbilical cord blood could help his heart function."There's another part of stem cells that don't create new tissue but create an environment to improve the existing tissue that's there, and that's what we're doing with this particular stem cell therapy," explained Dr. James Jaggers, with Children's Hospital Colorado.Dr. Jaggers says this syndrome is the leading cause of death for children with heart defects in their first year of life. Karson's first surgery was when he was just two days old. His second to inject stem cells into his heart came a couple of months later."The mode of stem cell delivery was actual physical injection of the stem cells into the heart muscle itself. We do that in a number of different places on the heart to try and improve sort of a global function of the heart for the long term," said Dr. Jaggers.One problem the doctors faced with the second surgery was it came during the start of the pandemic when travel was shut down. The Kirchners drove six hours from their home in South Dakota, but the stem cells had to be driven from the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota to Denver, a more than 12-hour drive.Karson still needs one more surgery, which doctors say will be when he's 2 or 3 years old. His parents know there's no roadmap for this. And while they wait to see how his body responds, they want to enjoy every moment."We get to enjoy our little boy and kind of live in the moment a little better and not have to worry about that hanging over our head. We know it's coming. But, like they said to do, don't worry about it. When it comes, it comes," said Josh Kirchner.Dr. Jaggers says the second phase of the study is done. Karson was the 16th to be accepted into it. The next phase will also include the use of stem cells in the third surgery. Dr. Jaggers says preliminary data shows some improved heart function.
