BEIJING, Nov. 10 (Xinhuanet) -- Awareness in three vegetative patients were detected in a portable electrode test, a new study shows. If replicated, the method may change standards in treating such patients.The new study, published online in the journal The Lancet Wednesday, was reported to be the first to detect signs of awareness in patients living in the unresponsive state through more accessible electroencephalogram (EEG) machine.The EEG is a portable and more affordable technique than Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner, but it is as effective as the MRI to diagnose patients in the vegetative state, according to the research team led by Damian Cruse and Adrian M. Owen of the University of Western Ontario.In the research test, the team hooked 16 previously determined to be vegetative patients to EEG machines and gave simple instructions to them like moving their fingers and toes.The machines show that the patterns in the premotor cortex, the area of the brain that plans and prepares movements, in three of 16 patients were exactly the same as those of healthy volunteers.While the patients were able to follow simple instructions, they were not able to make their own decisions about their state, the researchers said.

WASHINGTON, Dec. 28 (Xinhua) -- People with diets high in several vitamins or in omega 3 fatty acids are less likely to have the brain shrinkage associated with Alzheimer's disease than people whose diets are not high in those nutrients, according to a new study published on Wednesday in the online issue of Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.Those with diets high in omega 3 fatty acids and in vitamins C, D, E and the B vitamins also had higher scores on mental thinking tests than people with diets low in those nutrients. These omega 3 fatty acids and vitamin D are primarily found in fish. The B vitamins and antioxidants C and E are primarily found in fruits and vegetables.In another finding, the study showed that people with diets high in trans fats were more likely to have brain shrinkage and lower scores on the thinking and memory tests than people with diets low in trans fats. Trans fats are primarily found in packaged, fast, fried and frozen food, baked goods and margarine spreads.The study involved 104 people with an average age of 87 and very few risk factors for memory and thinking problems. Blood tests were used to determine the levels of various nutrients present in the blood of each participant. All of the participants also took tests of their memory and thinking skills. A total of 42 of the participants had MRI scans to measure their brain volume. Overall, the participants had good nutritional status, but seven percent were deficient in vitamin B12 and 25 percent were deficient in vitamin D.Study author Gene Bowman, of Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, said that the nutrient biomarkers in the blood accounted for a significant amount of the variation in both brain volume and thinking and memory scores. For the thinking and memory scores, the nutrient biomarkers accounted for 17 percent of the variation in the scores. For brain volume, the nutrient biomarkers accounted for 37 percent of the variation."These results need to be confirmed, but obviously it is very exciting to think that people could potentially stop their brains from shrinking and keep them sharp by adjusting their diet," Bowman said.

ISLAMABAD, Nov. 14 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan ranks the seventh in the world in terms of diabetes prevalence rate and over 7.1 million people in the country are diabetes patients, reported local media on Monday.Quoting a report by the World International Diabetes Federation, a local English newspaper "The News" said that every year 89,000 people die of diabetes in Pakistan and the number of diabetes patients in the country could hit 11.5 million by the year 2025 if proper measures were not taken.This would make Pakistan the world's fifth largest country in terms of its number of diabetes patients 14 years later, warned the report.At a seminar organized Monday in Islamabad to observe the World Diabetes Day which falls on Nov. 14, Dr. Abdus Salam from Shifa International Hospital, a private-run hospital in the capital city, said that every ten seconds, two people are diagnosed with diabetes and one person dies of diabetes-related causes.The average age of diabetes patients in Pakistan is one of the lowest in the world, said the report. ROME, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) -- China is playing its part in projects of the United Nations to improve global food security under the framework of South-South Cooperation (SSC), the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said on Tuesday.FAO recently co-signed two new tripartite agreements with China, Liberia and Senegal respectively to support implementation of a series of food security initiatives and projects in Liberia and Senegal, the organization said in a press release.The Rome-based food agency said the agreements were signed in the context of the Strategic Alliance between FAO and China on SSC in support of programs for food and nutrition security in selected countries.The funding provided through the new agreement comes from a FAO-China Trust Fund of 30 million U.S. dollars, it said.Under the agreement with Liberia, China will contribute over one million dollars and provide technical assistance through 24 Chinese experts and technicians to support implementation of the country's National Program for Food Security over a two-year period.In Senegal, China will provide assistance through 26 experts and technicians."At a time when continued economic uncertainties are having an impact on the flow of traditional North-South development assistance, South-South Cooperation is creating and building on partnerships that support the direct exchange of financial and technical contributions between developing countries," said Laurent Thomas, FAO Assistant Director-General, Technical Cooperation Department."FAO's experience with South-South Cooperation has shown that the knowledge and skills of technical experts and field technicians from the (global) South have made an invaluable contribution to efforts to modernize small-scale agriculture throughout the developing world," he added.FAO's SSC initiative was launched in 1996 to provide technical support to country-level action on food insecurity.According to the organization, a total of 47 tripartite agreements have been signed to provide technical assistance among developing countries in Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean, and over 1,500 experts and technicians have been fielded in the framework of various food security initiatives.In addition to the Strategic Alliance with China, letters of intent for SSC Strategic Alliance have also been signed so far with Argentina and Indonesia.
