SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The homeless population in San Diego County has decreased over the last year, according to a San Diego task force.  Every year, the county conducts a tally of how many people are homeless on a single night in January. This year’s count, done on January 26, was coordinated by the Regional Task Force on the Homeless.The task force says the number of homeless throughout the county has decreased six percent to 8,576. However, the number of homeless veterans went up to 1,300 - a 24 percent increase. Supervisor Ron Roberts, the Homeless Task Force Chairman, says permanent housing still needs to be a priority. “Seeing the overall number decline was a positive reversal, but there are far too many swings in data to declare a trend or to not see other areas where we need to increase our focus,” said San Diego County Supervisor Ron Roberts, who chairs the RTFH. “We continue to face many challenges, highlighted by a lack of new housing, a condition that squeezes hardest those with the fewest resources."RELATED: Volunteers count number of homeless living in San DiegoThe numbers from the federally-mandated Point-in-Time Count (PITC) show the number of sheltered and unsheltered homeless people in each of the county’s 18 cities, as well as in unincorporated areas.The County will present the full report, with a more in-depth analysis of the data, to the task force at 3 p.m.The PITC is meant to help communities and policymakers understand their regions’ most current challenges and areas with the most pressing need for limited funding. 1594

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The North County Transit District announced plans last week to expand the COASTER rail line to the downtown convention center.The San Diego Pathing Study outlined the plan to bring COASTER service to the convention center. The long-term endeavor would extend service from the Santa Fe Depot to the Convention Center. The plan includes an eventual station at the Convention Center.The study is mapped out in near-, mid-, and long-term projects. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The Anti-Defamation League in San Diego announced a reward Thursday for information leading to the arrest of a suspect who reportedly shot at the Temple Emanu-El in Del Cerro. According to the ADL, the temple became aware that the building had been struck by bullets in “recent days.” When exactly the building was targeted is unclear. The league says the bullet holes were discovered in a portion of the building not in use. San Diego Police are also investigating the incident, but the ADL says they don’t believe there is a “known continuing threat to Temple Emanu-El or other Jewish institutions in the area.”“ADL takes any report of violence against a religious institution extremely seriously, and will always commit our utmost effort and resources to securing justice for victims,” said Tammy Gillies, ADL San Diego Regional Director. “We hope that by offering this reward, someone with critical information for investigators will be motivated to speak out.“According to the ADL, 2018 saw a 27 percent increase in anti-Semitic incidents throughout California. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The county's average price for a gallon of gas eclipsed for the first time since May 22, according to AAA.The average price of regular gas in San Diego spike 9 cents Saturday and has risen 10 of the last 12 days for a total of 35.8 cents, according to AAA.Since last month, the average price is up more than 40 cents.MAP: Click here to find the cheapest gas in your areaIn California, however, the statewide average sits at .95 a gallon. The national average rests substantially lower, at .65 a gallon.The rise in gasoline prices has been attributed to several issues at refineries in California and just weeks after attacks on Saudi Arabia oil fields. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Drug Enforcement Agency launched a summer project drilling down on factors leading to violent crime across the nation. It is called Project Safeguard.Special Agent in Charge of the San Diego district, John Callery, said, "over 75% of those [violent] crimes are driven to get money to buy drugs."He said drugs and crime go hand in hand. "When a person devolves into a drug addict unfortunately they become very desperate right? And a desperate person will do desperate things to get money and buy drugs."Callery said his team geared up to knock out 15 cases with violent criminals. The arrests happened from August to October."We took a three month, for lack of a better word, a surge. Let’s get violent actors off the street. Let’s arrest them, DEA, and let’s charge them federally." Callery said they arrested 34 criminals.He added they have a lot of evidence to go through as well, "we’ve seized 71 firearms and... seized 160 kilograms of heroin and 160 kilograms of fentanyl."He hopes the arrests lead to hundreds more and reveal kingpins in the Mexican Drug Cartels."We’re a border town and we have a huge responsibility here to try and stop drugs from entering the United States because 75% of all drugs enter right here in our area and go to the rest of the United States." Callery said he is incredibly proud of his teamHe said five agents were infected with the novel coronavirus since March and have recovered. He said they haven't stopped working through the pandemic.Callery said his next big task is National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on October 24th.
