Companies are using some pretty sneaky tactics to make you think you're getting more than you actually are when it comes to buying things like cosmetics.But are they breaking rules?U.S. consumers spent billion in 2017 on cosmetic products.  Makeup enthusiast Alex Langer says she’s never really paid close attention to the amount of product inside the fancy cosmetic bottles."Unless you're a mathematician, you don't know what that really is," says Langer.The NOW’s investigative team looked at some popular brands and found some tricky packaging that seems misleading. (Disclaimer: we are not mathematicians)"I think that there is an ethical issue with trying to convey that there is more in that package than there really is," says marketing expert Darrin Duber-Smith.The NOW looked at two different oils from Olay products. One actually had more product than the other. The company is using what marketers refer to as "downsizing," which started a decade ago."You can make your package thicker, and that way it holds less stuff,” explains Duber-Smith. “You can put a false bottom or a thicker bottom at the bottom…you can fill it, not all the way to the top."Another product from e.l.f. looked as if it was full of product, but when you start unscrewing things and pulling if apart, you learn quickly that looks are very deceiving."Competitors have to kind of have larger packages in order to convey the perception that there's more and more product in there," explains Duber-Smith.Companies, however, cannot lie about the amount on the product’s label. The companies are required to be precise about what’s included on labels and the product amount is included."We have labeling requirements,” explains Duber-Smith. “We have regulatory agencies that do oversee these things."Packaging can change your perception dramatically. Each bottle of foundation we looked at differed in design, but the amount in the bottles were the same."I would agree completely that it's very misleading to consumers,” Duber-Smith says. “And my feeling is that if your intent is to deceive you have an ethical issue."So before you purchase your next beauty product, pay attention and make sure you are checking the labels; don't be deceived by pretty packaging. 2264

Comedian Conan O’Brien’s 28-year run on late-night television will come to an end in 2021, O’Brien announced on Tuesday.As part of O’Brien’s announcement, the television stalwart will be producing a new weekly variety series on HBO Max. CRAWFORD COUNTY, Ind. — A Wisconsin man drowned on Sunday when he jumped into a southern Indiana lake in an effort to save two women who fell off a towable tube and were struggling to stay afloat.According to a report from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, an Indiana conservation officer was on boat patrol on Patoka Lake in Crawford County around 2:51 p.m. Sunday when witnesses alerted him to a possible drowning. Multiple 911 calls came in shortly after reporting that a man had disappeared in the water.Conservation officers said two females were aboard the towable tube affixed to a stationary rental boat by a rope when they fell off the tube and struggled to stay afloat.Multiple people from the rental boat jumped in to assist and rescued one of the females. One of the people who jumped in to help, Travis Ray St. Martin, 33, of Racine, Wisc., disappeared under the water.The other female, K'neisha Adams, 25, of Burke, Virginia, was rescued by a group of people from a separate boat. She was taken by medical helicopter to University of Louisville Hospital and later released.Conservation officer public safety divers recovered St. Martin's body around 7:30 p.m. Sunday.The Crawford County Coroner's Office has preliminarily ruled the cause of death as accidental drowning.Conservation officers said alcohol and drugs are not suspected of being contributing factors.The DNR said although there were adequate life jackets on the rental boat, none were in use.This story was originally published by Bob Blake at WRTV. 1545

CVS hears the Amazon footsteps -- and the pharmacy giant is wasting no time trying to get ahead of any Jeff Bezos plan to disrupt the drug store business the way that he has the rest of retail.CVS said Monday that it plans to offer next day delivery of prescription drugs nationwide in 2018. In some urban markets, CVS will even deliver on the same day.A program to deliver both medications and a select offering of other CVS products from the front of the store will begin in Manhattan on December 4.CVS CEO Larry Merlo made the announcements during the company's earnings conference call with analysts.The news comes just a few weeks after reports surfaced that Amazon had received wholesale pharmacy licenses in a dozen states.That move would potentially allow Amazon to sell prescription medications online.The speculation caused the shares of CVS and rival Walgreens to fall, as did pharmacy benefits manager company Express Scripts, a competitor of the CVS-owned PBM Caremark.The stocks of drug distributors Cardinal Health, AmerisourceBergen and McKesson all fell too.This is because investors are worried that Amazon, which is already changing the dynamics of the grocery business thanks to its acquisition of Whole Foods, may look to do the same for drug stores.But Merlo said during the call with analysts Monday that he still sees Amazon as more of a potential ally than threat."You would never close the door on any type of partnership," Merlo said, when asked by an analyst about possibly working with Amazon.Still, CVS seems to recognize that the health care landscape is changing rapidly, and it needs to adjust. There have even been recent rumors that CVS may look to buy health insurer Aetna.Aetna scrapped plans to merge with rival Humana earlier this year due to intense regulatory scrutiny. Another insurer merger proposed by Anthem and Cigna died as well.Since then, the lines between health insurers and the pharmacy giants have grown increasingly blurred and incestuous.Anthem recently started up its own PBM, called IngenioRX, and has partnered with CVS.And Walgreens has partnered with a Blue Cross-backed PBM Prime Therapeutics to form a new mail order pharmacy company.Merlo and other CVS executives did not address any of the Aetna chatter on the conference call.But if the rumors are true -- and if an Aetna deal passed antitrust scrutiny -- then CVS appears to be on its way towards building a formidable health care/retail giant that may avoid getting Amazon-ed.  2507

Comedian Jimmy Fallon announced on Sunday that tapings for "The Tonight Show" for the coming week have been canceled due to his mother's death. Fallon had previously canceled Friday's taping at the last minute due to a family matter. On Saturday, Fallon's mother Gloria Fallon died at the age of 68. “Jimmy Fallon’s mother, Gloria, died peacefully on Saturday," a spokesperson for Fallon told NBC News in a statement. "Jimmy was at his mother’s bedside, along with her loved ones, when she passed away at NYU Langone Medical Center in NYC. Our prayers go out to Jimmy and his family as they go through this tough time.”Other comedians, including fellow late night competitor Stephen Colbert, offered condolences to Fallon. "Mom is the first audience and the best. Remembering Jimmy Fallon and his family in our prayers today," Colbert tweeted. Fallon opted to cancel tapings this week instead of employing guest hosts.
