SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- San Diego museums are getting ready to welcome thousands of visitors as Museum Month approaches. This year, Museum Month spans between February 1 and the 29. Throughout the month, San Diegans and visitors can pick up a special pass to save 50 percent at more than 40 museums throughout the city. The free passes are available at dozens of San Diego County libraries. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Right on the sanctuary walls of Christ Temple Apostolic Church in El Cajon, you will find a banner honoring our military and service. And service is a big part of the job for Bishop Donnie McGriff. “It’s not a job it’s not a profession. It’s a ministry. And that’s what I do. I love it,” says Bishop McGriff.And serve the Bishop has for nearly 60 years, starting right out of high school in the Navy. He served his community as a UPS driver. And for over 30 years, he has served in what he calls his ultimate role as the leader of his church. What was his calling?“I think I found out at an early age that my purpose or destiny was to serve,” says Bishop McGriff with a smile.The Bishop serves in so many ways with his congregation. They collect food for the less fortunate. He even founded a Christian based University focusing on Theology and Entrepreneurship. But the military has always been very close to Bishop McGriff’s heart. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County Supervisors are responding to a Team 10 investigation detailing the death of a child in foster care.Tyler Walter died Sept. 22, 2018. The cause of death listed on his autopsy is blunt head trauma.In a claim filed against the County of San Diego, Lisa Walter stated that her son Tyler, "was healthy when he was in my care he was thriving, he needed his mother and placing him with my 19-year-old niece was negligent."A representative for San Diego County Supervisors Greg Cox and Nathan Fletcher, Co-Chairs of the county's Child & Family Strengthening Advisory Board, says they can't comment on the specific situation in question because it represents ongoing litigation.RELATED: Mother claims San Diego County was negligent in death of her child while in Foster CareThe supervisors did release a statement about the child welfare system overall saying, "Any day a child dies is a horrifically sad day. Our child welfare system in America exists to protect children and preserve families, and we take that responsibility seriously. As a County, we are currently engaged in the process of evaluation and change to ensure we are doing everything possible to protect children and preserve families."In March the County Board of Supervisors approved creating the Child and Family Strengthening Advisory Board to help prevent and respond to child abuse and neglect.According to county officials, the new advisory board will serve as a platform for collaboration and transparent monitoring of the child welfare system to ensure the safety and well-being of children and families.A grand jury report released in June found multiple gaps in institutional safety and training in the Child Welfare Services division of San Diego County's Health and Human Services Agency.The grand jury found that most social workers are overworked and often spend as much or more time on administrative work than interacting with foster children and families, resulting in poor communication and coordination.CWS staff and foster parents also lack the proper training to offer trauma-informed care or support for victims of human trafficking, according to the report. 2188

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diegans who stress about taking care of DMV-related chores will soon have another opportunity on Saturdays.The San Diego-Clairemont DMV office will begin offering Saturday hours on Sept. 8 for all services except behind-the-wheel testing.Appointments are not required for Saturdays but are still recommended. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - San Diego County residents grabbed umbrellas and raincoats Wednesday as a cold storm system brought showers, flooding, winds, lightning, and snow to Southern California. Wednesday will be cooler and windier, with the heaviest rain and threat of flooding between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., according to 10News meteorologist Megan Parry. A Flash Flood Watch was in effect Wednesday until Thursday at 1 a.m. for the coast and mountain areas. Anyone in need of sandbags to prevent flooding can get them for free through the County of San Diego or City of San Diego. About 4 p.m., lightning strikes forced the California State Parks rangers to close Carlsbad state beach for safety.Check the 10News Pinpoint Doppler Live radar Thousands of people lost power around San Diego County Wednesday. The largest outages were in Chula Vista and Bonita, with some 4,300 customers out of power, and Oceanside, with 555 customers out of power. SDG&E's website listed the cause of many outages as being under investigation, and did not say whether the outages were related to the weather. Restoration times varied for the affected customers. See the SDG&E outage map here.The power outages affected the San Diego Trolley's Blue Line service at the H Street station in the South Bay, the MTS reported on twitter. The issue was resolved within an hour.Chula Vista Police notified the public that some traffic signals throughout the city are off due to the outage. The Norman Park Senior Center is also closed for the remainder of the day Wednesday. A Beach Hazard Statement was also in effect until noon Thursday due to waves up to 8 feet and dangerous rip currents. County environmental health officials issued a water contact advisory for beaches and bays due to bacteria from runoff. While many coastal outlets are posted with permanent metal warning signs, additional temporary signs are not posted for general advisories. Snow levels will drop to around 5,000 feet today and several inches of snow are expected by Thursday night, according to City News Service. San Diegans can find housing and meals at Father Joe's Villages and Connections Housing Downtown thanks to the San Diego Housing Commission and City of San Diego. Shelter is provided when temperatures dip below 50 degrees with a chance of rain, or below 45 degrees with no precipitation.SeaWorld San Diego was closed Wednesday but park officials anticipated reopening Thursday.While the weekend should be sunny and dry, more wet weather could be on the way.
