EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV) -- In 1987, at the age of six, Cody Martinez moved from Pine Valley to the Sycuan Reservation to live with his grandmother."My dad is Kumeyaay and Hispanic that is my link to my maternal grandmother, who is a tribal member here at Sycuan," said Martinez, the Chairman of the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation. "Going from Pine Valley to Sycuan wasn't too difficult; both were pretty rural.""San Diego County has the most Indian reservations within the county line in North America," he said. "There wasn't a lot of cultural events that I could recall. The first large cultural event that I could vividly remember was our first pow wow that we hosted in 1989. Today we have a full-blown cultural resource department and museum, and we have monthly cultural events."As Martinez grew older, his interest and involvement in the community also grew."At a young age, I realized that we had our own community, that had its own authority," he said. "We had a tribal council, we made our own laws, and we had our own rules, and I just knew that that's something I wanted to be a part of."In high school, Martinez said he volunteered in the tribal office and sat on different committees. As a young adult, he worked for Sycuan's gaming commission for a few years, then landed a seat in the tribal council as the tribal treasurer. After taking some time off after losing reelection as tribal treasurer, he later took a role in the planning and development department.Ultimately, Martinez would gain support from tribal families in 2014 and make his way into a leadership role, serving as the Sycuan Band of Kumeyaay Nation's Chairman. He was reelected in 2018 and currently holds the position."Sometimes, with all the political craziness and COVID craziness, I find solitude and reassurance that we get to manage our own community," he said.Martinez is thrilled to celebrate Native American Heritage Month again, hanging on to the rich history and keeping it alive by passing it all down to the next generations."The cultural exposure, I have two sons, 10 and 12, to their generation has definitely grown, their exposure and access to cultural enrichment. My sons were able to learn how to count in Kumeyaay and basic numbers and directions when they were very young," he said. "I make sure that I can get them to participate as much as possible; the Sycuan education center has a preschool and after school program, and there's cultural enrichment built into those programs."The Sycuan Cultural Resource Center and Museum also launched in 2016 at 910 Willow Glen Drive, El Cajon, CA, 92019. 2611

Do you have an iPhone? There's a lot of confusion these days over its COVID-19 tracking feature. Some people want it, some don't, and a lot of us are just plain confused.Yes, it's true: Apple's iOS 13.5 update over the summer added a COVID tracking feature to your iPhone. But that doesn't mean the government is spying on you, according to both Apple and reports in the tech blogs ZDNet and 9 to 5 Mac.You will need to activate the system with help from a local health department. You can find it by going Settings > Privacy > Health.Once in Health, look for COVID-19 exposure logging. It explains that an "authorized app is required" to turn the feature on. (9 to 5 Mac has more detailed instructions)Is Apple secretly tracking you?But from the doesn't that stink file, fears that Apple is secretly tracking you for exposure to the coronavirus.First of all, if your location services are "on," your phone keeps a record of everywhere you have been. That is not new, and has been an issue for years. But there is no truth to rumors that Apple -- or the government -- is checking to see if you are near people infected with the coronavirus. You have to turn the feature on for that to happen. And people with the virus would have to turn on the feature too.No smartphone can simply sniff out the virus out of the air. If so, they could warn us if we are near someone infected (now THAT would be a great feature).Bottom line: No one is tracking your iPhone for COVID exposure, unless you want them to.As always, don't waste your money.______________________________Don't Waste Your Money" is a registered trademark of Scripps Media, Inc. EL CAJON, Calif. (KGTV)— Family and friends of 19-year-old Kiera Bergman gathered at the Ronald Reagan Community Center to celebrate her life. A month-long search ended in a body discovery in the Arizona desert. Her ex-boyfriend, 23-year-old John Clark is accused of killing her. Kiera Bergman was the eldest daughter of the Bergman-Bragg family. Her mother Kiersten Bragg remembered Kiera had a strong personality, even before she was born.“I never forget I would always crave SpaghettiOs and that was one of her favorite things to eat,” Bragg said. She said as a teen Kiera would crave the canned spaghetti. Her family told 10News, Kiera was a spunky, playful, chunky toddler. "I always compared her to the Michelin man because she had tons of rolls everywhere,” her mother laughed. Then she became a big sister to Braydee. Kiera was silly, artistic, a talented singer, with a big heart. In his speech at the ceremony, her grandfather shared the time she spent her first ever paycheck from her part-time job on the homeless.“She bought the lady lunch. And I don't know many teenagers who will take their first paycheck and do that. So that kind of shows you what kind of girl she was,” Jim Bergman said, in tears. They said Kiera hoped to one day combine her giving personality with her dream job - America's best hairstylist.“Her dream was to at least once or twice a month, go to the homeless and do their hair and make them feel better about themselves,” Bragg said. But she was not able to live out her dream. Her boyfriend at the time, John Clark, convinced her to drop out of Cosmetology school. The two them moved to Arizona in March. Her boyfriend is accused of killing and leaving Bergman in the Arizona desert."That's what breaks my heart. She still had so much love to give,” Bragg said. Kiera Bergman's celebration of Life ceremony was so packed, it was standing-room only. 1945

Dr. Deborah Birx says she will help with a Biden Administration transition and then “I will retire.”“I want the Biden Administration to be successful,” Birx said in an interview with Newsy. “I will be helpful in any role people think I can be helpful in, and then I will retire.”The Coronavirus Task Force member said her family motivated her decision.“This experience has been a bit overwhelming. It's been very difficult on my family,” Birx told Amber Strong in a clip shared on Twitter. Birx talked about her parents and family members who have been isolated for ten months and have become depressed, “as I’m sure many elderly have.” 644
