SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Police responded Monday after a vehicle crashed into a Chick-fil-A in Mira Mesa.The crash happened on the 10700 block of Camino Ruiz near Mira Mesa Community Park. Authorities say no one was injured.Due to the crash, the inside of the restaurant was closed for the day as a structural engineer inspected the damage. Authorities haven't said what caused the crash.  407

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police are searching for a group of males targeting local Apple stores in the North County.Police said two Apple locations, one in Carlsbad and the other in Escondido, have been targeted in a series of grab and runs. During the incidents, police say the males generally enter in hoodies or jackets and grab multiple Apple devices on display tables before quickly exiting.Outside, a getaway vehicle is usually waiting, police added.MAP: Track crime happening in your neighborhoodThe thefts occurred at the Carlsbad location, 1923 Calle Barcelona in the Forum Carlsbad, on May 16, June 18, July 11, and July 13, and the Escondido store, at 272 E. Via Rancho Parkway at Westfield North County, on July 9.The suspects are described as African-American males in their early 20s, wearing hoodie sweatshirts or jackets with the hood portion tied closely to their heads. There may also be a female suspect involved, police said.Since January 2018, the incidents have resulted in more than 0,000 of losses. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- More rolling power outages are expected across San Diego as an intense heatwave bakes the county.SDG&E warned Monday that more rotating outages are likely across the region for the next few days."We certainly understand it's a pandemic and everyone is at home right now. We're working from home and schooling from home, and we totally get that, but everything we can possibly do to conserve any ounce of energy is going to help the collective right now," said Denice Menard communications manager for SDG&E.The California Independent System Operator runs the majority of the state's grid. The non-profit says the outages are necessary due to increased demand from the scorching temperatures, but some industry experts disagree."Asleep at the wheel might be a thought that comes to mind," said Bill Powers, Principal of Powers Engineering. Powers has worked on electrical systems for decades, and he's also testified as an expert on energy matters.Powers said there was nothing unusual about the heat."Those of us that watch this on a daily basis knew that Friday was a hot day, but it wasn't an atypical hot day. There was nothing special about Friday's temperature or electrical demand in terms of what we are capable of handling," said Powers.The last time California had rolling blackouts was in 2001. Powers believes the outages have more to do with how the power is managed rather than how much is available."That's due to their whole format where they determine who has the cheapest power in this moment, and then we will let that operate.If you have some units that take awhile to come up to speed that are higher cost, the system doesn't really work that well for that," said Powers.California's governor also called the outages unacceptable and promised a swift investigation."If they start operating the grid with a little bit of practical wisdom, they're not going to be any more blackouts. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Parents who are concerned about their traditional school district’s ability to handle distance learning this fall are running into a roadblock when seeking other options: wait lists.School choice advocates say a growing number of California parents are seeking out charter schools that specialize in “nonclassroom-based” instruction because of their long track records in distance learning, but a new state law is essentially capping enrollment at pre-pandemic levels.“Tens of thousands families are in limbo right now,” said Jeff Rice, founder of the APLUS+ Network Association, an association of 85 nonclassroom-based California charters that specialize in personalized instruction.There are at least 13,000 students currently waitlisted throughout about two dozen of the association’s schools, Rice said.Advocates have launched petitions, urging lawmakers to scrap a provision in SB 98 that capped funding for all public schools -- including charter schools -- at February attendance levels.Schools are typically funded on a per pupil basis, but the cap means funding will not scale up as attendance grows.“Some [charter] schools have wait lists of 2,000,” said Jennifer Cauzza, executive director of the JCS Family of Charter Schools.Cauzza said she’s in contact with about 30 charter school executive directors and “all of them are capped.”About 300 of California’s 1300 publicly funded charter schools are classified as “nonclassroom-based,” Rice said. The term includes home school, online and hybrid models, and is somewhat of a misnomer because students often get some in-person instruction from a credentialed teacher.These tuition-free charter schools will operate wait lists on a lottery system, not a first-come basis, so parents still have time to apply.Otherwise, parents who want to homeschool their children have two other options, and both require the parent to act as the teacher, said Elisa Hilliard, who operates the Facebook page San Diego Homeschool Mom.Parents can file a PSA, a Private School Affidavit, and essentially open their own private school within their home. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Naval Base Point Loma was locked down Thursday over reports of a suspicious person.In a Facebook post, the base said "all personnel onboard the installation are directed to seek shelter in the nearest building and activate lock down procedure" and remain inside until told otherwise. The lockdown was lifted just before 2 p.m. and Harbor Drive was reopened to traffic. The base told 10News that it appeared the caller believed to have seen a suspicious person, but the person in question was not believed to be a threat.The base added the Gateway Youth Center and Patrick Wade CDC had been taken off lockdown and parents allowed to pick up their children.10News is monitoring this breaking news. 722
