SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The two candidates hoping to become San Diego’s next mayor cast their ballots on Tuesday morning, and both Democrats had messages to voters on Election Day.Barbara Bry and her husband dropped off their ballots at a library in La Jolla on Tuesday. The day before, Bry spent time with her supporters and worked to drum up more support from voters. With his family by his said, Todd Gloria cast his ballot on Tuesday at the County Registrar of Voters in Kearny Mesa. On Monday, he had Gov. Gavin Newsom help him campaign through a virtual phone bank. After carrying out their civic duty, both candidates had messages for San Diego voters.“People hear our message of change for our city. Our focus isn’t on small issues like vacation rentals and scooters, but the big issues like homelessness, housing affordability, and transportation,” Gloria said.Bry said, “We built a grassroots volunteer effort with residents from all over this city. We knew from the beginning we were fighting against the special interest, special interest that has spent more than a million dollars running negative attack ads against me.”The most recent ABC 10News/San Diego Union-Tribune scientific poll shows this race essentially in a dead heat. 1245

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- The San Diego County Clerk is preparing for its busiest wedding day of the year this Valentine’s Day. The office of the county clerk put out a statement Wednesday urging couples wishing to tie the knot to make an appointment. “We are excited to offer walk-in services at our historic downtown office on the waterfront for Valentine’s Day and don’t want couples to miss their chance at Valentine’s Day wedding,” said County Clerk Ernie Dronenburg. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The Rancho Bernardo area could be getting its first legal marijuana dispensary. Will Senn, the President and Founder of URBN Leaf, has plans to open a dispensary in a strip mall at 16375 Bernardo Center Drive, just east of the 15 Freeway.A Conditional Use Permit filed with the city says it will be a 6,647 square foot business, the first of its kind in City Council District 5."There's a big demand, for sure," says Senn. His company owns two other URBN Leaf stores in San Diego County. He says people from the Rancho Bernardo area drive to his other locations frequently. He also says they receive delivery requests to the neighborhood. "We're excited about the opportunity, we think the community does need it," says Senn.Community members disagree. They say it's the wrong place for a dispensary.City law allows just four dispensaries per City Council District. Right now there are none in District 5, which includes Rancho Bernardo, Scripps Ranch, Carmel Mountain, Rancho Penasquitos, Torrey Highlands and San Pasqual. There are already 23 other marijuana dispensaries operating throughout San Diego.Senn's permit application is the only one on file with the city for District 5.The city's rules governing the placement of dispensaries say they must be at least, "1,000 feet from resource and population-based city parks, churches, child care centers, playgrounds, libraries owned and operated by the City of San Diego, minor-oriented facilities, residential care facilities, and schools."Opponents say the new dispensary would be within 1,000 feet of the Hope United Lutheran Church on Bernardo Center Drive. They also say two other storefronts within the strip mall qualify as "minor-oriented facilities," the Kumon Math and Reading Center, and the Little Artists studio.Senn says that's not the case."We're 1,000 feet away from the church," he says. "And there is some language in other projects that have been approved by the planning commission that is consistent with our project."Opponents will have their chance to voice their concerns Tuesday night at the Rancho Bernardo Development Review Committee Meeting. It will be held at 6 pm at the Rancho Bernardo Library on 17110 Bernardo Center Drive.Senn says he plans to listen to all of the comments and take the community's concerns to heart. But, he adds that his company's track record of running other dispensaries makes them good partners who know how to operate legally."We like to tread lightly and be delicate when we enter a new market," says Senn. "But we do have experience. We've been doing this for a long time. And there's no better company prepared to enter a market like Rancho Bernardo than Urbn Leaf." 2706

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Thursday night, the State Board of Education voted to decline the renewal charters for all four Thrive Charter Schools in San Diego. They explain the test scores are too low and keep dropping. The vote technically didn't carry because the board needs six votes to pass any motion. The vote Thursday night was four to two, not all members were present for the vote. If the schools are forced to shut down, nearly 1,000 students would have to look for new schools at the end of the school year. She tells me this is her daughter's first year, "it's been a Godsend because I was so done with not being able to have LeLe brought up to her potential in the public schools". This school year, Buehler moved her daughter to Thrive and says she doesn't think the state board should shut the schools down solely based on that, "it's mind-blowing because this is going to change so many students lives, not the better, and it’s a shame that it's based on numbers on a paper when you actually see these are future leaders in our community."Meanwhile, some parents have already contacted the San Diego Unified School District to enroll their children for next year. The District Operations Support Officer, Marceline Marques, tells 10News, "in the past 24 hours, we've already placed 60 students throughout the district from Thrive". RELATED: College admissions scandal: San Diego woman sues University of San Diego, other schools over alleged scamThe district tells 10News this isn't the first charter school forced to shut down. In the past three years, three different charter schools have closed.Thrive Charter School's CEO was in meetings all day Friday but they forwarded 10News the email they sent to parents which read in part, "We are not giving up, we believe there are still a number of options that we need to discuss with our legal board and counsel in the coming days". 2052

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Three East San Diego County school districts are moving back to distance learning because of this weekend's harsh weather. The San Diego County Office of Education says schools in Julian Union Elementary School District and Warner Unified School District will move to distance learning on Monday. The county made move due to forecasted snow Sunday night and freezing temperatures on Monday.SDCOE added that Julian Union High School will have a snow day without distance learning with a scheduled makeup day at the end of the school year."The safety of students and school staff is of the utmost importance to San Diego County school districts," the county said in its announcement. The National Weather Service forecasts the Julian and Pine Valley areas will see one to two inches of snow overnight at 4,500 to 5,000 feet, and lows of 23 to 33 degrees. Monday, the high is expected to hover between 46 and 52 degrees before reaching the mid-50s on Tuesday. The mountain region should hit low- to mid-60s on Saturday, according to NWS. 1058
