On Tuesday, the Justice Department awarded more than million in grants to nonprofits who help survivors of human trafficking.Attorney General William Barr, Ivanka Trump, an adviser to President Donald Trump, and other officials announced that 73 organizations in 34 states will receive the grants, which will be provided by the Office for Victims of Crime, which is a component within the Justice Department's Office of Justice Programs.“Human trafficking is a barbaric criminal enterprise that subjects its victims to unspeakable cruelty and deprives them of the most basic of human needs, none more essential than a safe place to live,” Attorney General Barr said in the statement. “Throughout this Administration, the Department of Justice has fought aggressively to bring human traffickers to justice and to deliver critical aid to trafficking survivors. OTAY MESA (CNS) - A pedestrian died Thursday after being struck by a hit- and-run motorist near Brown Field Municipal Airport, authorities reported.The 21-year-old woman was in a crosswalk in the 8200 block of Otay Mesa Road when a westbound silver Nissan Altima struck her about 9:15 a.m., according to San Diego police.The victim, whose name was withheld pending family notification, died at the scene.Following the fatal impact, the motorist continued driving and fled the area to the west, Officer Tony Martinez said.The vehicle is described as a four-door, silver-colored Nissan Altima. It was last seen traveling northbound on Heritage Rd. towards Chula Vista. 674

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) - A car reportedly flew off a freeway in North San Diego County, causing a chain reaction collision.A 20-year-old woman driving a Buick reportedly careened off westbound SR-78 near El Camino Real, through the fence separating the freeway from the Vista Way, and collided head-on with a Ford Thunderbird being driven by a 47-year-old woman traveling eastbound.The collision set off a chain reaction, sideswiping a Nissan van towing a small boat. The boat then came loose from its trailer and flew into the westbound lanes of Vista Way, striking a Toyota Prius, being driven by a 43-year-old man, and a Chrysler 300 being driven by a 95-year-old man.The driver and a male passenger in the Buick both sustained major injuries and were airlifted to Scripps La Jolla hospital. Another male passenger sitting in the back seat of the Buick received minor injuries and was taken to Palomar Medical Center.The driver of the Thunderbird was slightly injured as well, but not taken to a hospital. No other injuries were reported.Police are investigating what led to the Buick driving off the freeway, but said they do not suspect alcohol or drugs to have been a factor. 1216

One of the former Minneapolis police officers charged in the death of George Floyd is requesting charges against him to be dismissed.The lawyers for Derek Chauvin reportedly filed a motion to dismiss the second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter charges against their client.Meanwhile, prosecutors are seeking stiffer sentences for all four men charged in Floyd’s murder.In documents filed Friday, prosecutors noted that Floyd was vulnerable and treated with particular cruelty.Two of the officers--J. Kueng, Thomas Lane and Tou Thao-- are charged with aiding and abetting both second-degree murder and manslaughter.A judge has the discretion to order up to 15 years on the murder counts under the state’s sentencing guidelines. (KGTV) - A woman run over and killed by a construction vehicle at an Oceanside beach was identified by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office.The ME’s Office said 68-year-old Carol Aguirre died in the incident that occurred Sept. 28 on the beach near Oceanside's South Harbor. Aguirre was listed as a transient, the office noted.Oceanside police said the victim was lying on the sand on the beach off the 1200 block of North Pacific Street at around 10 a.m. when the incident happened.RELATED: Woman run over, killed by heavy machinery on beachAccording to police, the woman was apparently asleep when a tractor, which was involved in a dredging project at nearby Oceanside Harbor Beach, struck her.The woman died at the scene.It was not immediately known if the victim was in an area closed off to the public when she was run over by the heavy machinery. 889
