SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Scripps Research scientists have figured out how to reverse the desire to drink in alcohol-dependent rats. According to a news release, the researchers were able to use lasers to temporarily inactivate a specific circuit in the brain to reverse the behavior. “This discovery is exciting—it means we have another piece of the puzzle to explain the neural mechanism driving alcohol consumption,” says Olivier George PhD, an associate professor at Scripps Research and senior author of the new study.Though the discovery is exciting news for science, researchers say the treatment is far from ready for human use. George says he believes that the discovery will open the door to developing drug and gene therapies to treat alcohol addiction. “We need compounds that are specific to this neuronal circuitry,” George says. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - South Bay Pentecostal Church has been involved in a legal battle since May regarding worshiping indoors, and officials think Friday could be the light at the end of the tunnel.Senior Pastor Arthur Hodges believes during a motions hearing Friday morning the church will be granted permission to reopen indoors.His hope comes from the latest rulings by several judges.On Dec. 3, the Supreme Court ruled places of worship in New York could reopen, saying restrictions meant to curb the pandemic violated the First Amendment of the Constitution.After that ruling, the high court issued an unsigned order to California judges to reconsider Gov. Gavin Newsom's restrictions.On Wednesday, a judge ruled restaurants could reopen indoors in San Diego."That absolutely makes us hopeful, and I've told restaurateurs, business owners, whatever, we're fighting for you, too. Now we have a bigger gun than they do. We've got the Constitution, OK; they don't have that. but they're finding ways to get around it with the right to assemble," Hodges said.Hodges said back in May their initial lawsuit was voted down 5-4 by the Supreme Court.Hodges believes under a high court that shifted majority when Judge Amy Coney Barrett replaced the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg, they will prevail."If religious liberties are lost, you can mark it down your personal liberties are going to be lost," Hodges said, arguing this lawsuit is to protect more than places of worship.Hodges said if they win this legal battle it will pave the way for the rest of the country. 1563

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Some long-time roller derby kids are upset after Skateworld management announced their Youth Roller Derby program was cut. Many of these kids were instrumental in the "Save Skateworld" campaign in April. When Skateworld was on the verge of being turned into a big box store, they were there. "We got out of school the day of the City Council meeting," mother, Meadow Beidler said. Armed with their skates and signs, dozens of roller derby kids convinced San Diego City Council to vote to save Skateworld on April 8, 2019. "We really thank the kids for coming out and making their signs," Skateworld general manager, Brett Stang said. His father Gary Stang started the rink in 1975. It has been a Linda Vista institution ever since. Earlier this year, when a developer shared plans to turn Skateworld into a big box store, the derby kids rallied and protested for days.Little did the kids know, that the home they just helped save, would essentially kick them out. Beidler is a proud "Derby Mom" of three fierce girls: "Cheshire Splat," "Hot Sauce," and "Zoom Zoom Kaboom." But now, she doesn't know if she will keep that title. "We don't know if we are going to be able to continue with derby," Beidler said. Days after the city council vote to save their rink, Beidler says her girls were suddenly told that their Youth Derby program would be cut. Management explained it was due to administrative reasons. "The way it went down it was just heartbreaking," Beidler said. The kids were told to join another club instead."We haven't been able to give that derby team the attention it kind of deserves," Brett Stang said. "They've been bumped for private events and other slots, so there is another team out there, 'Derby United,' who offered to take our program under their wing."But Beidler says the problem is that Derby United's new facility in La Mesa has not started construction. She also says Skateworld's prices cannot be beaten. "If we were to continue that and do derby at this new location that hasn't been built yet, then it would cost my family an additional 0 a month," Beidler said. Her girls are now so distraught, they cannot even speak. After all they did for Skateworld, they feel unappreciated. "Having our kids getting excited and politically motivated and going on camera and speaking from the heart how it is family," Beidler said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego State University has suspended over a dozen fraternities after a student who attended a reported fraternity event was hospitalized this week with unknown injuries.SDSU President Adela de la Torre suspended Interfraternity Council (IFC) activities citing the "severity of the incident" following the alleged fraternity event Wednesday night, a statement from the school read."Given the severity of this incident, and as the safety and wellbeing of students is a primary concern of the university, SDSU President Adela de la Torre has suspended the Interfraternity Council (IFC) and all chapter organizations under the council," an SDSU media relations officer said Friday.SDSU clarified Saturday that a campus fraternity is "alleged to have been involved in possible misconduct" in the Wednesday event.Prior to Wednesday, the school says six IFC organizations were under suspension and four were under investigation, leading to de la Torre's decision. The suspension affects all 14 IFC fraternities with more than 1,400 members.
