SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Too many young military families in San Diego are finding themselves trapped in mountains of debt, not knowing where to turn. It's a devastating problem that the nonprofit Support the Enlisted Project (STEP) is working to tackle."It's a real challenge, and I think we are setting these families up for failure a lot of the times," said Tony Teravainen, CEO and Co-founder of STEP. "Their wage with all their allowances, E4 and below, 100% of them are below HUD's low-income level."RELATED: San Diego woman climbs out of 3,000 debt holeTeravainen says families often don't ask for help until things have gotten really bad. STEP helps prevent roughly seven evictions each month for young military families. "As a country, we don't have great financial habits. And what we see is when families enter the military we put additional burdens on them, and a lot of times this pulls them further, further into debt. We ask them to move their houses every two to three years; service members can be deployed at least a third of the time."The goal is to get as many families in need into their Emergency Financial Assistance (EFA) Program.RELATED: Making it in San Diego: Millennials outpace Generation X in both total debt and long-term savingsThe EFA Program is a unique social-work and change-management based program that was specifically designed to move military and veteran families from a financial crisis to a lifetime of financial self-sufficiency. Each family gets a social worker who helps them create a budget and set goals for the future.Teravainen says 4,500 families have come through the program since it was created in 2012 and they have a 90% success rate."A success story to me is a family that can change their behaviors," said Teravainen. Families in need of help can learn more on the STEP website. 1846

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — WWE Wrestler John Cena paid his friend and rookie Padres pitcher, Logan Allen one dollar, after losing a bet he made a year and a half ago. The signed dollar was handed to Allen at the Ceremonial First Pitch, a day after the 22-year-old made his Major League debut at Petco Park. Allen's debut performance on the Major League mound Tuesday was nothing short of stellar. Off the mound, he also hit a single to right field, helping his own cause in a 4-1 victory for the Padres. This his was the game that changed Logan Allen's life forever, and earned him a dollar from John Cena. It all started in January 2018, when the then-Minor Leaguer had a chance encounter with Cena at a Tampa Steak House. The two clicked and made a bet. "How can I create a situation, not to have Logan fail? But to face him with the concept of failure? I bet him a dollar that he would not make it into the Major Leagues," Cena said to the Padres. They shook on it and kept in touch. Fast forward to Tuesday, and John Cena was in the Owner's Box, witnessing his friend deliver seven shutout innings. After walking off the mount, the 13-time WWE Champion was seen giving his friend a standing ovation. Allen received a long, emotional hug from his teammates. In a post-game interview with 10News, Allen said it was a day he will never forget, thanks to a unique friendship and a fun little bet. "He [Cena] is a selfless, unbelievable human being that is almost too good to believe. But he is the man, he portrays on off the screen or the ring or whatever he is doing," Allen said. 1582

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- With indoor dining shutdown, local restaurants are relying on takeout orders to stay afloat.Curbside pick-up, with a holiday flair, has been the specialty of the house at Parc Bistro and Brasserie in Bankers Hill. The service has also helped the eatery stay alive. In true holiday spirit, customers will see Santa and his Christmas elves deliver their food right to their car."If we could just dress up a little bit, and feel good about it, we can spread that positive energy in these tough times," says restaurant general manager Samantha Scholl.Scholl calls the last nine months devastating and an emotional roller coaster. She had to layoff close to 30 of her staff since March "We've had to pivot and change, and then we had to shut down and re-open. But we are grateful because we've had such strong support from our community," said Scholl. And since there is no dining in, Parc Bistro is offering curbside holiday packages, of which they have sold out all 250."The community has been behind us since the beginning and especially this last year which has been incredibly tough," Scholl says. The community has been behind Parc Bistro, and Scholl has been behind her staff. "I did another holiday relief fund through GoFundMe. My goal is to raise ,000 and I'm at about ,000 right now. Also, all of the gratuities we receive from guests from our holiday takeout is dispersed equally among all our staff," she says. But while Christmas packages are all sold out, Scholl says you can still get your New Year's Eve order in. "You have to have our beef Bourguignon it's a French classic," Scholl said. 1634
