SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Three San Diego County high school football teams qualified for the state finals but may not have enough funding to attend the tournament, school officials said Monday.Lincoln High School boys just finished what coach David Dunn is calling a “Cinderella season”. The team has never before qualified for the event.“Just to have the experience and the opportunity to do it, and let alone be the first team to do it, it means a lot,” said T'ray Kirkland, senior player.The Lincoln High Hornets have had a slim roster, injuries, even a forfeited game. They beat Mira Mesa for the CIF championship.“There have been games where we really had to step up. You just see how much heart each and every person on this team has,” said Kirkland.“Their willingness to compete is different than a lot of the other teams that I've had before," Coach Dunn said.The boys have also been competitive academically. The team averages a 3.1 grade point average with as many as eight players holding a 4.0. Lincoln High is scheduled to play Menlo Atherton this weekend in the San Francisco suburb of Redwood City. The game won’t happen if the team doesn’t get more money. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — The remains of a 79-year-old man found in a fire pit on Fiesta Island have been identified.The remains were identified as Elias Rene Rodriguez, of San Diego, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner. Rodriguez's remains were discovered by a passerby on Oct. 29 at about 10:30 a.m. on the east side of Fiesta Island. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - The sticker-shock of college can be daunting, but with planning and some research there is financial aid out there for the taking.To get the process started families must fill out the Free Application for Student Aid, better known as the FAFSA.The FAFSA is roughly 156 questions and looks at a family's financial situation.Colleges nationwide use the FAFSA to determine the amount of financial aid to award to students,The form can now be filled out online but college planning expert Ron Caruthers also recommends printing a paper copy for reference because it contains more guidance.“It’s my bread and butter because so many families really make mistakes and don’t understand the process," said Caruthers. "I’ve worked for 25+ years helping families pick schools that have money, not make mistakes on the FAFSA and save a ton of money on college.”Families can start submitting FAFSA’s October 1 and the deadline is March 2.Caruthers recommends doing so by January.He says a major mistake families make is listing assets they're not required to, including their home, IRA's, and personal property.What you should list: cash, stocks and bonds that aren't in a retirement account, and equity in a rental home.“This is an area of enormous stress because, for a lot of families, next to their house this is going to be their biggest investment, and it's going to come in a very short period of time, unlike a house they can pay off over 30 years,” said Caruthers.He says it's important to be detail-oriented on the FAFSA, for example, making sure you put income in the right line. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – The San Diego Unified School District on Tuesday announced a delay in the next step of its reopening plan.District officials, citing a surge in COVID-19 cases, said virtual distance learning will continue into early 2021. Officials also said the district would push back moving into its second phase, which would have reopened school campuses.A letter to families regarding the decision was posted on the district’s website:"Due to ongoing health concerns related to COVID-19 and the safety of our students, staff and community, we have decided to continue with online learning for the majority of students through the first part of the new year. However, appointment-based, in-person instruction will still be available on campus for students with the greatest needs through Phase 1.The decision to remain online longer than we had hoped will be disappointing to the many students, teachers and others who are eager to be back in the classroom. However, the current spread of the coronavirus in our community makes it unsafe to move forward with Phase 2 of our reopening at this time. We plan to reassess the public health conditions and provide an updated timetable on Jan. 13.In the meantime, we will continue to provide updated information on our reopening plans on our website. This includes a status dashboard and a complete list of the conditions we are continuing to watch for when it will be safe again to reopen campuses.We will also continue increasing the number of students participating in the small group instruction, with infant/toddler, early learning, middle school, and high school students to start receiving appointments on Dec. 7.
