SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A developer is proposing to build 1,200 housing units over the now-shuttered Carmel Mountain Ranch Country Club golf course.New Urban West is planning what's called "The Trails at Carmel Mountain Ranch." The plans, submitted to the city, call for 1,200 multifamily homes - a mix of for sale, and for rent - plus 111-acres of open space, including six miles of trails. The 164-acre project would make 10 percent of its rental units available for low-income households at 65 percent of the median income. "The plan features affordable and market rate housing for young families, working professionals, and seniors in very close proximity to thousands of jobs and a major transit center," said a statement from Jonathan Frankel, a vice president at New Urban West.Carmel Mountain Ranch golf course closed in 2018, amid a series of golf courses shutting down due to skyrocketing water rates. The course has since been fenced off, and is dominated by weeds and overgrowth. Now, a group of residents called Carmel Mountain United is raising concerns over the development in the golf-centric neighborhood. The neighborhood has several golf-cart crossing warning signs and its streets are named after famous courses.Troy Daum, who heads the group, says many people bought in the neighborhood because of the golf course. Now, his group is raising concerns that the development could increase traffic and make it more difficult to evacuate quickly in the event of a wildfire. Daum said New Urban West has ignored those calls and should instead focus on redeveloping area retail centers into mixed-use housing. "I don't think there's compromise with 1,200 homes," Daum said. "There's just not room in the community to handle that."Frankel says the project comes after neighborhood workshops and online surveys. A release from New Urban West notes upwards of 1,600 units could have been built on the property. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - 23 people were injured Saturday night when a structure collapsed at an indoor parkour center in Barrio Logan.21 of them were children. Two were adults, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.The collapse happened about 8 p.m. at Vault PK, a parkour center on Main St. and Sigsbee. Children who were above and below the structure were hurt.The injuries ranged from minor to moderate.Cory Brizendine, a parent, estimates there were about 50 kids there. They were called up to the platform for pizza."Once the majority of kids got up there the whole platform collapsed," he said.Shannon O'Brien was among the adults on the platform. "It was scary," she said.  She said it was a place parents sit to watch their kids, and she thought it seemed stable.  831

Florence Oliver has lived in San Diego her whole life."I was born at SD General at that time, but of course I don't remember it!" A brass bell from the Carlsbad School which rung daily for class.In 1922, Florence's uncles stole stole the bell to pull off a prank on her mother's wedding night. "They hung it, in those days you had those wire springs on bed to hold mattresses, they hung it underneath, no one knew… so the bell really rang loud!"Rather than return the bell, it stayed in the family - first handed down to Florence's oldest brother, and then the next brother, and eventually to her."What does it mean to me, it's just a piece of our life, and it's gone through our family, it's like it's related."One day, Florence had a conversation with her niece. "She said Dad used to go in the garage and she told me that bell needs to go home, that would make him very proud."So last month, Florence made good on her promise. SAN DIEGO (CNS) -The county Health and Human Services Agency Friday reported two unrelated tuberculosis cases, and that people may have been exposed to the bacteria at Southwestern and San Diego City colleges, and on a Metropolitan Transit System bus route.The county is working with officials from both community colleges and MTS to notify those who may have been exposed to TB. The periods of possible exposure were:Aug. 26 to Dec. 10, 2019 at Southwestern College;July 26, to Aug. 5, 2019 and Aug. 19 to Dec. 16, 2019 at San Diego City College;July 26 to Aug. 5, 2019 and Aug. 19 to Dec. 16, 2019, Monday through Friday on MTS Bus Route 12, with two departure routes: from Skyline Hills between 7:59 and 8:47 a.m. to City College Transit Center, and from City College Transit Center between 7:04 and 8:04 p.m. to Skyline Hills.Symptoms of active TB include persistent cough, fever, night sweats and unexplained weight loss, said Wilma Wooten, county public health officer. "Most people who are exposed to tuberculosis do not develop the disease," she added.Tuberculosis can be treated and cured with medication. People with TB symptoms or are immuno-compromised are encouraged to see their medical healthcare provider, according to the county.According to the county, the number of tuberculosis cases has decreased since the early 1990s, with 265 cases reported in 2019.Free TB testing will be available at Southwestern College Student Health Services, 900 Otay Lakes Road, from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A bicyclist suffered life-threatening injuries after crashing near University of San Diego's campus.The bicyclist, identified as a 36-year-old man, was riding in the westbound bike lane along the 5600 block of Linda Vista Road at about 8:30 p.m. Friday, according to San Diego Police. Then for an unknown reason, police said the bicyclist overturned and crashed.The man was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.He was transported to a nearby hospital with a skull fracture and several other serious injuries - which were considered life-threatening, police said.SDPD Traffic Division is investigating the cause of the crash. 661
