BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- China has kept a "generally stable" coal mine safety record in the first nine months of 2010, as the death toll caused by accidents remained almost flat over the same period last year, Zhao Tiechui, head of the State Administration of Coal Mine Safety (SACMS), said here Monday.From January to September, the nation's coal output reached 2.44 billion tonnes, up 17.2 percent, but accidents dropped 13.2 percent year on year, Zhao said.He did not give any actual numbers of coal mine accidents or deaths caused during period, but said the death ratio per million tons of coal output stood at 0.783 percent, down 13.9 percent over the same period last year.According to the SACMS's last publicized figures, deaths from coal mine accidents totaled 3,215 in China in 2008. In the January-September period of 2009, China recorded 591 fewer deaths from coal mine accidents, down by 23.8 percent from the 2008 level.Gas explosions, floods and fires inside coal mines were frequent occurrences during the first nine months, posing severe safety challenges to China's coal mine production, Zhao said.In a separate report by the State Administration of Work Safety in July this year, workplace accidents left 33,876 people dead in China during the first half of the year.

BEIJING, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Wang Qishan Monday pledged to work with Cuba to lift the friendly bilateral relationship to a new level.Wang made the remarks while meeting with Ricardo Cabrisas Ruiz, Vice President of the Council of Ministers of Cuba.Cabrisas is in China to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two nations.Cuba was the first Latin American nation to forge diplomatic relations with China, in 1960.Wang spoke highly of the development of China-Cuba ties over the past half a century, noting that the two countries have always supported each other and enjoyed frequent high level visits.China will work with Cuba to expand win-win cooperation and strengthen economic and trade links with a view to further advancing bilateral ties, Wang said.Wang said China will continue to help Cuba within its capacity.Cabrisas thanked China for offering economic and technological assistance to his country.He said Cuba will make concerted efforts with China to promote pragmatic cooperation in various sectors while pushing forward the existing sound bilateral relationship.

GUANGZHOU, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers combing the mud-slide debris found more than a dozen bodies Friday, bringing the death toll of typhoon Fanapi to 70 in south China's Guangdong Province, while 65 people remain missing, local disaster relief authorities said.The bodies were recovered after work crews entered towns cut off by mud-slides such as Magui Township in Maoming City, the provincial flood control authorities said.Helicopters were dispatched Friday to send relief goods -- bottled water, food, and tents, to floods-isolated areas in the hardest-hit counties of Gaozhou, Xinyi and Yangchun, the authorities said.About nine tons of goods have been delivered on Friday.By 6 p.m. Friday, about 99,500 people in Guangdong were evacuated for the Fanapi-brought disasters. BEIJING, Aug. 31 (Xinhua) -- China's banking regulator will strictly implement the central government's macroeconomic policies that aim to curb soaring housing prices, an official said Tuesday.Ye Yanfei, deputy head of the Statistics Department of the China Banking Regulatory Commission (CBRC), said the CBRC will restrain speculative property investment and support the building of affordable housing while controlling risk.China's housing market and lending to the property sector are crucial to the national economy and people's livelihood, as well as to the stable and steady development of the nation's banking sector, Ye said at a seminar in Beijing.Ye's remarks come after the banking regulator said it would further "instruct and monitor" commercial banks' efforts to strengthen the management of lending to home-buyers.Ye's comments echo those of Zhang Ping, director of the National Development and Reform Commission, who said last Thursday in a report to China's top legislature the government will "further implement the measures meant to curb excessive gains in housing prices and resolutely restrain speculative property investment in the second half the year."Ye also said the CBRC has pushed lenders to test the impact of falling house prices, although the regulator said earlier that hypothetical scenarios examined in stress tests do not herald any change in policyHousing prices in major Chinese cities rose 10.3 percent year on year in July, slower than the 11.4 percent growth rate in June, according to official figures.On a monthly basis, housing prices in June fell 0.1 percent from May and July prices were unchanged from June.
