BERLIN, July 29 (Xinhua) -- China is gradually learning and absorbing ideas on human rights that can grow on its soil, and remains opposed to attempts by the West to impose its standards on China, says Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Fu Ying.In a recent interview with the German weekly newspaper Die Zeit, Fu said it seems "controversial and illogical" that Western countries acknowledge China's economic success and contributions to efforts against the global financial crisis, while "definitely" turning a blind eye to China's political progress. It seems as if the West wants to say that China has achieved all these without the leadership of the government and the Communist Party, maybe in total anarchy, Fu said."I still remember when I was an interpreter in the 1980s, human rights was always on the menu in our dialogues and our European guests brought lists of names with them," she said."Thirty years later, China has moved on, and so much has changed. In 2004, protection of human rights was incorporated into China's constitution. Many relevant laws and rules have been amended accordingly," Fu said. However, European delegations still come to China with the same stance, accusing China in a commanding way, Fu said."I really don't hear much mentioning of China' s human rights progress," she said.Yet, those political extremists seem to be presenting the whole picture of China's human rights for European countries, she said.Fu believes that to know the real China, it's not enough to "single out things you are interested in, or only listen to people who talk your talk."The most important is to look at the benefits of the majority of the people, she said.

ISLAMABAD, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- All the Chinese trapped in the flood-hit Pakistan's northwest province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have been evacuated to safe places with the assistance of the Pakistani side, said Liu Jian, Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan on Monday.According to Liu, a total of 265 Chinese workers and engineers working at a hydro power station project in the Patan area of Kohistan District in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were trapped on a mountain after a huge landslide triggered by floods and torrential rains washed across their work site on July 29.Three Chinese engineers and workers went missing after they were reportedly washed away by the flood water and landslide while working inside a tunnel. The trapped Chinese who retreated up to a nearby mountain surrounded by the flood water suffered a great deal as they were in serious lack of food and water and had to fight the coldness of living in the open atop a mountain lashed by torrential rains.Upon hearing the news of the Chinese trapped in the flood-hit area of northwest Pakistan, the Chinese embassy immediately kicked off an emergency rescue operation under the assistance of the Pakistani government, army and police.Three military helicopters were dispatched to the site where the Chinese were trapped for the rescue work. Large numbers of troops and police forces were mobilized as well. The Chinese ambassador together with his embassy colleagues also rushed to the site from Islamabad on July 31 by fighting the difficulties on the disrupted roads leading to Patan. After nearly five days of cocerted efforts by the Chinese and Pakistani sides, all the Chinese trapped on the mountain in the Patan area had been evacuated to safe places as of late Monday afternoon, said Liu Jian, adding that the search operation for the three missing Chinese is still underway. However, the chance for the survial of the three missing Chinese is very slim, said Pakitani police officers who are involved in the search operation.

BEIJING, June 25 (Xinhua) -- Since the first Group of 20 (G20) Summit in November 2008, the attention China has been getting has shifted from that of a turn-round-to, to that of a look-up-to, analysts said. Two years ago, almost all developed economies turned round to look at what actions China took to cope with the financial crisis. Now in the midst of a uneven global recovery, China has become one being looked up to by developing and developed economies for its leading if not exemplary roles. As the curtain is about to rise at the upcoming fourth G20 summit in Toronto, Canada, China and the crucial roles she is playing once again draws the world's attention.A STEADY STABILIZER IN GLOBAL DEVELOPMENTPrior to the first G20 summit, China has since been managing to sustain a rather fast growth rate while taking an active part in orchestrating with other economies, developed and developing alike, to push for a global recovery through reformed and renewed financial and economic mechanisms.Despite the fact it is still a developing country itself, China alone has contributed toward half of the global GNP growth in the time of crises.Amidst downslides of the United States, eurozone and Japan, China not only curbed the domino ripple in the country with a bolder-than-predicted stimulus package but also succeeded in effecting a lead in the recovery. It is its early lead off the blocks that is now being more than looked at by others.Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, soon to host the fourth G20 Summit, has described what China has done as a contribution to the global recovery and a great assistance to the international community in its crisis management.Takashi Sekiyama, a senior researcher from Japan's Meiji University and with the Tokyo Consortium, has rated China's contribution to the global economic development during this hard period as the "biggest."

BEIJING, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- Police authorities in Beijing launched a microblog, blogs and a podcast on Sunday in the latest move in its public relations campaign. This came about half a month after police in the Chinese capital set up a public relations office to enhance transparency and interaction with residents. The Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau officially launched its new media services at the news portals sina.com, sohu.com and 163.com and video-sharing site ku6.com after a three-day trial. The services, branded as "Safe Beijing", offer a new communication channel between police and the general public. Microblogs, for example, have become a quick and popular source of news and information for increasingly more Chinese citizens.Fu Zhenghua, head of the bureau, said last month that law enforcement activities could easily be hot topics in the media and among the public in this highly open and transparent Internet era."With the aid of modern technology, we hope to communicate with residents and vulnerable groups with frankness and sincerity, as well as promote social justice," said Fu.In the first microblog post, the bureau pledged to offer the latest police affairs news, anti-fraud tips and stories of model community police. The bureau has posted dozens of practical anti-fraud and anti-theft tips and police affairs news, including training programs for special police and stories about model police officers serving their first day on the police force.More than 17,600 people logged onto the microblog service on Sunday and some posts received hundreds of comments. Most welcomed the services, saying it can bridge the gap between police and average citizens and change the traditionally mysterious and superior image of police officers."This is really a good thing. Let's applaud the social progress and gradual government openness," said netizen Tongtianniu."Welcome! It is badly needed to face directly to public opinion now," said netizen Lijiazhufu. Some netizens, however, blasted the services as "too official", calling on police authorities to use simpler words and sentences in the microblog posts.Liu Dawei, head of the bureau's new public relations office, said the staff in her office would accept netizens' opinions and suggestions in a sincere and open-minded way."We will strive to build a bridge of interaction and equal communication," Liu said."The microblog can be used as a good way to solicit public opinion. For a public security department, I believe it can help solve criminal cases by widely obtaining clues from the public," said Huang Qiliang, a translator with a global non-profit organization. In the past, police authorities have been criticized for their being passive or not responding to some cases, even after details had previously been published in widely read media reports.Wang Dawei, a professor at the Chinese People's Public Security University, said with the new services the police have made a positive shift from passive actions to taking the initiative. In addition, the general public can offer clues for criminal cases, as they are the main force in curbing crimes, Wang said.
