DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) — There's something of a spectacle along the beach in Del Mar these days: A bulldozer that's helping to preserve the city's main attraction.The heavy equipment is taking wet sand from the water line up to the public entrance areas, where it will protect access points to the beach. On Wednesday, the work was being done near the 23rd Street entrance. On Tuesday, it was closer to homes near 29th Street. "Without a beach in Del Mar, we're not Del Mar," said Councilman Dwight Worden. Worden says the bulldozer can only do so much. In the bigger picture, the city is negotiating with the California Coastal Commission on how it can combat rising sea levels. Worden noted that scientists have predicted the sea level to rise by six feet by the year 2100. "If it rises, it's going to erode the beaches, if it floods more from climate change, we'll have more flood water coming down and putting them at risk, so it's a combination," he said.Worden says the city has a plan to preserve its beaches through at least 2050 largely through a sand replenishment program, which the commission has not approved. He said Del Mar has put a controversial plan called "Managed Retreat" off the table. Managed Retreat could entail removing the multi-million dollar homes that line the shore to allow the beach to expand inland. The Coastal Commission has given the city 25 suggestions on its plan. Worden, however, said some of those suggestions appear to be nudging the city toward practices that could be like Managed Retreat. "If you look at the 25 changes, they're kind of gumming around that back and through the kitchen door," he said. The two agencies will next meet in February. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A woman in Florida is being charged with animal cruelty after being caught on video throwing a dog off a motel balcony.The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office shared body cam footage of the incident when they announced the arrest of 35-year-old Allison Murphy on Tuesday.Warning: Some may find the video below disturbingOfficers say they responded to the Dayton Beach motel around noon Monday after staff reported that Murphy had been standing over a railing and threatening to jump. She also allegedly attacked a maid.When law enforcement arrived, Murphy reportedly locked herself inside her room. After knocking several times, the sheriff’s office says the women came out with a leashed German shepherd, which she picked up and threw over the railing to the ground.Authorities say the dog landed feet first and ran away before being corralled by bystanders. It was then turned over to Volusia County Animal Services, who nicknamed her “Miracle,” because no name was provided.“Miracle” was taken to an animal hospital for emergency evaluation. She thankfully escaped serious injury, but an x-ray did reveal a sewing needle was lodged one of her thighs, according to the sheriff’s office. She underwent a procedure to remove it and is recovering in the care of a foster family, who wants to adopt her if a court grants animal services custody.As for Murphy, the sheriff’s office says she was taken into custody and will be facing felony charges of animal cruelty and resisting an officer with violence. 1528

DETROIT — "They strictly thought their so-called white privilege was gonna work this time and it didn't," said Marc Peeples who was acquitted in a directed verdict in a case where three women, who are white, accused Peeples, who is black, of stalking them.The women repeatedly called Detroit Police on Peeples, an urban farmer, who said he wanted to grow a garden in his old neighborhood in the area of 8 Mile and John R on the city's east side. In the beginning, Peeples said one of the women donated soil to his project, but then he and his attorney say it became about power, race and false allegations."These women were clearly lying," said Peeples who was shocked when Detroit Police arrested him after prosecutors charged him with three misdemeanor counts of stalking.This was a case of "gardening while black" said defense attorney Robert Burton-Harris, who represented Peeples at trial.Harris said this is similar to other cases around the country where "you have people calling the police on, mostly,?African-Americans for doing very mundane things.""I wasn't doing anything but planting a seed to help my community grow," said Peeples. 36th District Court Judge E.
