SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — One Comic-Con tradition for many has been donating blood every year through the San Diego Blood Bank.While the convention isn't happening in person, locals can still participate in the yearly blood drive and score some SDCC swag while they're at it.San Diego Blood Bank is extending its annual Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive until Aug. 18 at any blood bank center or mobile donation drive. Donors will also receive a limited-edition Marvel Black Widow t-shirt while supplies last — a traditional reward for donors every Comic-Con.For the last 43 years, the blood bank says the drive has seen more than 25,000 pints of blood donated, impacting more than 75,000 lives.The drive is even more important this year as the blood bank faces a shortage amid the pandemic. Last month, the center said it's experiencing a critically low blood supply and all blood types are needed. Summer is usually a challenging time, according to the blood bank, strained even more without schools being open, businesses hosting drives, and as local hospitals continue surgeries delayed due to the pandemic.The blood bank is also testing all blood donations for coronavirus antibodies through the end of July. To be eligible to donate blood, you must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 114 pounds, and be in generally good health. Appointments must be made through the blood bank here. 1393

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - More low-income seniors are taking back their independence with help from the St. Paul's PACE program.PACE helps seniors live independently at home by providing social services, in-home care, transportation, personalized medical services, and senior activities.Norma Griego is a PACE Certified Nursing Assistant and visits about six seniors a day. She checks on their well-being, does light housekeeping, and spends time socializing with the seniors. "Socialization is so important. There are times that they don't get out to see a lot of people and just listening to their stories is wonderful and then getting to know them and build relationships with them, it's amazing, it's just wonderful," said Griego.Iva Records is a PACE participant and is turning 102-years-old this Halloween. "Well I just like it here; I like my independence, I like to get up when I want to, I want my breakfast when I want it," Records.Because Records has trouble seeing, she relies on PACE to continue living independently at home. "They always are there for you," said Records. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Neighbors are concerned after they say a registered sex offender moved into their Rancho Bernardo community, just feet away from an elementary school playground.Anthony James Morgan, 32, was convicted of possession of child pornography and lewd and lascivious acts with a child in Tennessee in 2013.Neighbors say they became concerned after Morgan moved into a townhouse in their neighborhood weeks ago. According to records on the Megan’s Law website, Morgan lives on the 17000 block of Caminito Baya, about 100 feet away from a playground at Westwood Elementary School.According to the Safe Task Force, which monitors local sex offenders, Morgan’s living situation is legal because of the California Supreme Court.In 2015, the court tossed out blanket restrictions on where sex offenders may live. The ruling came after sex offenders said the restrictions made finding housing impossible for them.  Authorities say while probation or parole agents can implement living restrictions, due to the fact that Morgan is no longer on parole or probation, he is now allowed to live wherever he wants.Neighbors say the rule doesn’t make sense. “I think the rules definitely need to be changed when it comes to sexual predators,” said Linda Vasquez.Vasquez added that she is relieved to hear that Morgan will be moving out of the area in April. “I’m very happy for that. We don’t need that in a neighborhood full of children.”The neighborhood is particularly sensitive to the sex offender issue. Neighbors say registered sex offender John Gardner was spotted at this mother's home - less than 500 feet from Westwood Elementary - in the years before he murdered two teens, including Chelsea King.Father Brett King helped lead a successful fight for tougher laws, including stricter punishments for sex offenders.  When he learned about Morgan's living situation, he told 10news: "As a society, we have lost our common sense ... SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Murder during rape is a special circumstance, meaning no bail for the man accused of killing an elderly woman in her Normal Heights home in 1987.Kevin Ford, 62, didn’t have much to say in court Tuesday, charged with the murder and rape of 79-year-old Grace Hayden. Some advances in technology and persistent police work helping make today happen after three decades.The video remains just as chilling today as it was 31 years ago. Hayden's body was wheeled out of her home. Her neighbor told 10News reporter Steve Fiorina back then, that she was a friendly neighbor."She was loveable, friendly, never bothered, as far as I know, anyone," the neighbor said."Never went out because she was something like handicapped. She was a nice lady," another neighbor said.The case went cold until a single fingerprint found on Hayden’s stove. And some hard work led investigators to an arrest in North Carolina.San Diego DA investigator Tony Johnson was reviewing the unsolved case when he found that fingerprint. He submitted it to a national database and got a hit from a 20-15 warrant out of North Carolina.Three years ago he talked with KPBS saying, “a case goes cold primarily when the initial team that’s investigating the case has run out of leads.”Ford was extradited to San Diego. Tuesday, he was arraigned before a judge. A public defender said ford denies all charges.Ford is due back in court on Aug. 7. 1460

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- One person is dead following a shooting at a Midway-area sex shop, according to police.The shooting happened around 12:45 p.m. on the 3600 block of Midway Drive.The identity of the victim and the details surrounding the shooting weren’t immediately clear.
