Cardiologist Stephen Sinatra suggests satisfying that sweet tooth the healthier way by adding berries to your small slice of pumpkin pie. Berries have bioflavonoids, carotenoids and polyphenols, which support the immune system.Consuming Vitamin C rich foods, such as peppers, broccoli, and oranges, are also essential to avoid respiratory infections. Zinc, found in meat, seeds and nuts, is just as important. According to the International Journal of Infectious Diseases, a zinc deficiency could make battling the virus harder and could lead to a long hospital stay and higher death rates.As for Vitamin D, Dr. Sinatra says it’s like a knockout punch against COVID. But getting enough of it could be a challenge this time of year. With more people at home under quarantine and less sunlight during cold months, Dr. Sinatra recommends at least 2,000 to 5,000 units of Vitamin D3 a day during the pandemic.Finally, take quercetin. It's a bioflavonoid found in onions, black tea and green apples. Also, be sure to get plenty of sleep and exercise. With most Kindergarten through grade 12 schools starting in less than a month, many parents are trying to figure out what is best for their family when given the option between in-person or virtual learning?What about preschool for 3 to 5-year-olds who were looking forward to in-person learning this fall?For parents who believe it’s safer to keep their child home, there are ways to get them learning beyond the A, B, C’s.“With our younger children we know they really thrive in predictability and routine and that is all gone right now,” said parenting expert Carly Dorogi.Preschool participation has fallen by half during the pandemic, according to the National Institute for Early Education Research. But that doesn’t mean kids can’t learn at home.Dorogi says children ages 3 to 5 can learn math using everyday items.“If I have five Cheerios on the table this is what five looks like and it’s a small amount compared to when I have ten Cheerios on the table,” Dorogi said.Playing with dolls or action figures can help language skills, forcing children to talk and put sentences together. Playtime is motor skills time.“Our little guys can actually improve their handwriting by playing with play dough or doing anything that’s a small motor that strengthens their hand muscles,” Dorogi said.If you want to introduce virtual learning, Dorogi suggests Osmo’s starter kit. It’s an app and hands-on play.If you’re looking for workbooks, check out Grand Haven-Based School Zone Publishing. They say their preschool-aged items have been selling more now due to the pandemic. And they have an app called Anywhere Teacher that has a curriculum to follow.Barbara Peacock is the managing director of School Zone Publishing.“What they need to learn first, then next and it’s a step by step program so it’s really nice to kind of tie the two together both print material, doing flashcards, working on worksheets and then putting them for 30-minutes a day on Anywhere Teacher and working with them,” she said.It is OK if your preschooler can’t sit still.“They need to move," Dorogi explained. "Sitting at a desk for even an hour is too much and I don’t want parents to feel like that’s the expectation. So, think about alternative seating. Aggressive driving, drunk driving or distracted driving?They're all bad, but new information out on Thursday shows when it comes to risky behavior on the road, distracted driving now tops the list. Nearly nine out of 10 drivers believe it's on the rise. But experts say there are things you can do about it.From reaching for something to the increasing danger of technology, it has become easier to become distracted while driving. In a study out Thursday, the AAA Foundation found drivers talking on a cellphone are up to four times more likely to crash than those not using a cellphone. Those who text and drive are eight times more likely.Mark Stolberg, the Vice President of training at Masterdrive, said many of us look at distractions as small interruptions we can stop at any time.“The problem with it is the traffic situation can become threatening very quickly,” said Stolberg. “So even a little distraction is very dangerous.”“So if you have to check something else, if you have to check the mirror, if you have to check your navigation right, check that then get back focused on driving," Stolberg added. "Get right back focused on driving.”Stolberg demonstrated that when a text message is received, drivers have a tendency to take their eyes off the road. In a split second, Stolberg said that drivers could miss a changing traffic light, causing potential accidents.
